Front Cover Star The Rainbow Directory is celebrating its 4th year of publication so we have designed a new front cover. But we need your help! Would you like your child or children to be on the next front cover? If yes, then please email or call on 01983 872191. We are looking for all ages of children and need an up to date photograph. They would then be asked to come for a mini photo shoot. This could be on location or in the studio. We would be looking for a new star(s) for each issue.

My children are growing up all too fast and I am well aware of the information I need for them. If you know of a group, club or service that should be in our directory please ask them to contact us or please email us their details to [email protected]. Whenever you use the directory, please mention where you saw the advert and if a friend or family members would like a copy of their own please just call and we will pop one in the post for FREE.

If you would like your advert to be seen in the next edition of The Rainbow DirectoryPlease call us for an information pack. If you don’t tell families about your school, club, group or services they will not know about you. If you want more business then tell parents what you have to offer. Our advertising costs, starting for as little as £20, really does offer you value for money. Our directories are produced 3 times a year and we print 20,000 copies each time. Also I would like to thank Mandy from The Wight Studio for the new photo of me and my boys.

Have a good summer

Take care Polly01983 872191 - 0845 6036989email: [email protected]

New Breakfast Club for Niton

In Niton something exciting is happening. From September 7th 2009 the Primary School and the Pre School are joining together to provide wrap around care for children aged 2-9 years. The children have named the sessions the ‘Sunrise, Sunset club.’ They have been busy writing business plans and sending out questionnaires to gain as much information as we can about the needs of the community. Every week we intend inviting visitors to enrich the provision. Activities will include, learning circus skills, sewing, drama, singing, sports and anything else that the children require.

There will also be opportunities for Family Learning and consultation with professionals who can discuss employment, health and general advice. The cost will be between £2.50 and £3.00 per hour. The Sunrise Sunset club will not alter the current provision in Niton but will enhance it. For further information please phone for 2 - 5 year olds - Jayne Hill 730985 5 - 9 year olds - Ingrid Ramsdale Capper 730209 (See ad page 18).

YMCA Day Nursery

Children at YMCA Day Nursery and Pre-School, based at St Mary’s Hospital, not only have four large playrooms and an extensive garden to play in, but also supervised access to the hospital grounds providing a wealth of exciting learning opportunities. Although in the middle of Newport, the grounds include areas of woodland for the children to explore in a safe and caring environment. Children are encouraged to take controlled risks and learn from each other with suitably tailored activities.

A recent excursion focussed on the abundant wild daisies and trees, with children learning how to describe and identify different parts of the plants, explore different textures and bark colours and even have time for hide and seek and tree climbing! With the emphasis on learning through involvement, children asked questions on tree size, leaves and why some trees were bigger than others. (See ad page 22)

Rhythm Time Launches Educational Song & Rhyme Booklet!

Rhythm Time has launched its first ever educational booklet called ‘From Waking to Sleeping’. It complements the developmental learning approach used in the Rhythm Time Baby classes and reinforces the developmental benefits gained by using music and singing in every day activities. This helps to stimulate vital brain connections that must be made in the first year of a baby’s life.

The booklet has been written by Rhythm Time’s owner and founder, Kathy Doolan. It contains simple fun songs and rhymes to accompany activities throughout the day such as changing a baby’s nappy, play time, quiet time and bath time, giving explanations of the developmental benefits to the baby for each activity.

Copies will soon be available to buy in our classes or through our online shop.

Sandown RocksSandown Rocks is the fabulous new outdoor climbing wall set in the grounds of Sandown High School. The wall is designed to reflect the dramatic coloured sands of Alum Bay and remind us of the strong sailing history of the Island. The mainsail and foresail reach heights of nearly 10m and our lofty spinnaker sail stretches to 12m! The view from the top is superb and the sense of achievement even better! Even the red squirrels in the nearby treetops seem bemused to see people abseiling down from above them!

‘I love working at the climbing wall’ explained Senad, ‘It’s just such fun and so satisfying to see first time climbers approach the wall rather cautiously; this soon turns to shouts of glee, big grins and thumbs-up signs from the top of the wall. Everyone achieves at the wall and often it is those who struggle at traditional team sports who achieve the most. Sandown Rocks impacts on the life of everyone who climbs it, giving them extra confidence in everything they do. It is truly an inspirational place!’ (See ad page 28).

Choclate Chip Cookies by Hungry Harry Book Review

This recipe makes a fabulously rich cookie with a crunch on the outside a wonderful gooey, sticky inside! You can find cookie recipes in many books but this one is a genuine American Mid-West recipe and let’s face it, the USA is the home of the big, yummy, chocolate chip cookie.

Ingredients You will need

300g plain flour Weighing scales1/2 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda (baking soda) Sieve1 teaspoon fine salt Large mixing bowl170g unsalted butter, melted and cooled slight Medium mixing bowl215g light brown sugar Wooden spoon120g granulated white sugar Cling Film1 tablespoon vanilla extract Baking tray1 large egg1 large egg yolk300g milk chocolate chips

Instructions

1. Melt the butter and set aside to cool. 2. In the medium sized mixing bowl sift together the flour, bicaronate of soda and salt. Set aside. 3. In the large mixing bowl stir together melted butter, brown sugar, white sugar and vanilla. 4. To the large mixing bowl add one whole egg, then the single egg yolk. Beat well to ensure that egg is evenly distributed. This will make a rich yellow coloured paste. 5. Next stir in dry ingredients that you have in the medium sized mixing bowl. 6. Then fold in the chocolate chips until well mixed. It will look as if there are too many chocolate chips and it is hard to stir but the dough will be able to hold them all. 7. Place half of the mixture onto a piece of clingfilm that you have laid out on the work surface. Roll the mixture into a long sausage (about 25-30cm in length). Wrap tightly in the clingfilm. Do the same with the remaining half of the mixture. Put both “sausages” in the fridge to chill for at least 30 minutes. 8. Preheat the oven to 190C/Gas Mark 5. 9. Take the now chilled “sausages” out of the fridge and slice them into 1-2cm thick “hockey pucks”. You will need a good sharp knife to do this. Drop the “pucks” onto a greased baking sheet. You may need to just tidy up the shape a little depending how sharp your knife was! Leave a 4-5cm space between each “puck” as they will grow! 10. Bake in your preheated oven for approximately 10-12 minutes or only until the edges begin to turn golden. (They’ll look and feel underdone but they’re ready.) Cool on the sheet for 1 minute and remove with a wide spatula to a cooling rack. Cool thoroughly and enjoy!

Another great thing about this recipe is that you can slice and cook one of the “sausages” today and freeze the other “sausage” for a quick cookie fix when you need one another day!

Make Mayville your First Choice

Mayville High School is a small independent co-educational day school, a little gem tucked up, in the heart of Southsea. Founded in 1897 our size is our strength, big enough to offer pupils a wide range of opportunities, we are small enough to truly treat each pupil as an individual.

We have a fleet of minibuses that pick up, and drop off daily at the Hovercraft terminal, so getting to and from our school if you live on the island is very straight-forward.

At Mayville we can offer your child a place from the age of 6 months to 16 years. Divided into the Nursery, Pre-Prep, Junior and Senior Schools, we have a renowned Dyslexia Unit and offer a Gifted and Talented Programme. Each child is a valued member of our school, and our aim is to identify your child’s strengths and help them recognise their own potential. This encourages them to achieve not just academically but in every area of school life.

At Mayville we believe it is the happy child who learns, and the confident pupil who fulfils their potential. Education in our school is a three way process involving the school, pupils and their parents. Small classes are a priority, and girls and boys are taught separately in most subjects to best meet their learning styles. We also offer flexible teaching programmes to help meet the needs of each individual learner. At Mayville our aim is to ensure that children feel secure and valued. If you feel your child would flourish in our environment, don’t hesitate to call us we would love to show you round. (See ad inside front cover).

Eton and Winchester Successes

Hordle Walhampton School pupils, Thomas Shakespeare and Henry Carey-Morgan, have been awarded places at Winchester College and Eton College respectively. Thirteen-year old Thomas has been awarded an academic scholarship to Winchester, whilst Henry, who is also thirteen, has been given an unconditional place at Eton. “Both Winchester and Eton have extremely high standards and a tradition of accepting only boys able to demonstrate a strong academic foundation and a good breadth of interests,” said Henry Phillips, Hordle Walhampton’s headmaster. “We are therefore delighted for Thomas and Henry who, together with their teachers, have worked extremely hard to achieve this success.” “Eton’s traditions and history really appealed to me and I really wanted to go there, so I’m very pleased to have been awarded a place.” said Henry. It was Thomas’s academic work that won him the Winchester scholarship. He said: “I did work really hard and fortunately it paid off, so I‘m now rather looking forward to a relaxing summer before I join Winchester in September.”

Priory School

Priory School is an Independent Co-educational Day School for boys and girls aged 5 -16 years. In September 2010 this will extend from 16-18 years as a Sixth Form will open. This will offer a complete education from 5 to 18 ensuring no disruption to your child’s education.

It was founded in Shanklin in 1993 out of Upper Chine School. In March 2009 the school came into the ownership of Edmund Matyjaszek, who is a company director, trained in law, who was also for years Director & Trustee of the National Poetry Society. His family has been in teaching for generations.

The new management team consists of a Principal, Heads of Junior (5-11) and Senior (11-18) Schools, School Administrator and Bursar.

Priory School continues to focus, as it has done since its foundation, on the development of each individual pupil, with small class sizes, pastoral flexibility, and sound academic results. Since March 2009 clear discipline, team sports, music and drama have been developed, together with wider links into the community.

The aim of Priory School is to offer a first-class education at an affordable cost in a well-structured and clearly-run environment to become the school of choice for parents and pupils on the Isle of Wight.

Win six sessions at a Caterpillar Music Class for 3 children

Caterpillar Music classes are based around music and movement for Under 5’s and are filled with fun. In a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, the children - some as young as six months old, are inspired to learn and build on their speech and language development alongside their social and confidence skills.

With different weekly themes, captivating puppets, exciting instruments, music making and innovative songs, the classes have proven to be one of the most attended and popular Pre-School activities on the Island. Parents and grandparents join in all the activities meaning everyone has a fantastic time each week and leave the class with happy children who look forward to coming back.

In June there was a new edition to the classes. He is the Caterpillar Music bear called Cosmo. Once a week, he is taken home by one child from each class for them to look after and a record kept of his adventures to share with the other children in the class.

For your chance to win, just answer the following question.

“What is the name of the Caterpillar Music Bear?”

Win 1 of 3 family tickets to visit National Trust Properties on the Island For a fun day out with a difference this summer why not visit one or more of the island’s National Trust properties all of which welcome families and provide a variety of activities to keep all ages amused. The Needles Old Battery must be one of the Trust’s most unusual sites. Perched high above the cliffs on the most westerly tip of the island it now has a pushchair friendly viewing platform so everyone can get a good view of the rocks. Explore the site with a family discovery pack which is free to borrow and then search for Major Mindup and his five Gunners hidden around the Battery. When you’ve found them, see if you can find the flowerpot people in Mottistone Manor Garden before borrowing a discovery pack.

Bembridge Windmill is the island’s only surviving windmill and has four floors to explore with the help of a new children’s quiz sheet. Although no longer in working order, the mill contains most of its original machinery and by turning the handle of our new working model you see how all the different parts worked together. The Island’s smallest property, Newtown Old Town Hall also has a children’s quiz sheet and a variety of nature activities are run by the Newtown Education Warden.

For your chance to win 1 of 3 family tickets please answer.

“Where will you find Major Mindup?”

Please remember only one entry per child is permitted, please write clearly with your name address, aged and phone number and send your answer to The Rainbow Directory, PO Box 119, Bembridge, Isle of Wight PO35 5WZ. By the 31st July or you can enter the competition if you visit www.therainbowdirectory.co.uk All winners will be notified by phone and by post. If you enter the competition your details will not be passed on. Family tickets are valid for one visit to each of the Needles Old Battery, Mottistone Manor Garden, Bembridge Windmill and Newtown Old Town Hall for 2 adults and up to 3 children under the age of 18 until 1 November 2009. Caterpillar Music voucher is for 6 session starting the September 09 for the winning child only.

This year we would like to help

The Rainbow Club Downs Syndrome Support Group

They need your help!

The Rainbow club is the only Downs Syndrome support group on the Island, it is affiliated with the Downs Syndrome Association. The Rainbow Club supports children with Downs Syndrome and their families on the Island. They have a library of resources for families and professionals to borrow also organises days out for the families, funds training for parents and more.

All this is funded by donations, small grants and fundraising. Haylands Primary School kindly have let the group use their playzone mobile as a base for the group. The club meet the first Saturday of the month from 2pm - 4pm. Families and friends are all welcome. But The Rainbow Club would like to find a base near the centre of the island to store their growing library and to meet up. We would also like to fund more speech and language support as this is a particular weakness for people with Downs Syndrome. If you have a hall, room or know of some where that the group could use each month with a space to store their things then please call Claire on 01983 568601.

Hovertravel have been assisting in the groups travel to specialists in Southsea every month. But The Rainbow Club would like to have a specialist group here on the island to help all families island wide.

They have been fundraising with ‘Big Step Forward’ it was a sponsored walk around Steyne Park in Bembridge to Raise awareness of Downs Syndrome and to help funds for The Rainbow Club and DSA.

If you can help in anyway please contact the group on 01983 568601 or email [email protected]

Thank you for your support

Warmahome with the Footprint Trust With hot days ahead and the possibility of one of the best summers on record insulating your home against the cold maybe the last thing on your mind. The Footprint Trust’s Warmahome project is urging householders to consider insulating their homes now and take advantage of various special offers on loft insulation and cavity wall insulation.

The good news is that most homes can be insulated for less than £400 - and the pay back in money saving can be made over two cold winters. For more information please contact the Trust on 82-22-82.

The project also provides free home visits, giving energy saving guidance on boilers, windows and insulation, and shows ways in which to reduce energy bills. The scheme aims to improve the well-being and quality of life for families across the Island whilst reducing environmental damage caused by energy being wasted. The Footprint Trust doesn’t just work with adults they have a schools programme aimed at pupils of all ages. The workshops help young people understand about the world’s diminishing resources and help schools to reduce their energy bills and waste in general. Their educational work is sponsored by the Isle of Wight Council and thus is free to all Island schools.

Chemical FREE Cleaning for your home, your school or place of work !

Debbie and Jane from Enjo on the Island have been very busy since our spring issue. I met up with Debbie to find out about her work with Island schools. Steve Barlett head teacher of Nine Acres Primary School in Newport told us that the school had been using Enjo products since July 2008. The first week of the summer holidays and the cleaning staff started to use Enjo products. So no more cleaning with chemicals. The school class rooms and offices are now cleaned without chemicals and the school have introduced it into the breakfast and after school clubs. Nearly a year on and the cleaning products are still going strong.

It maybe hard to believe, I had to see a demo myself. Lots of Island schools have followed Nine Acres Primary. Schools following a healthier option, and role models for a green Island are Wootton Primary School (now have the cleaners using ENJO), Haylands Primary making a difference, Barton Primary are cleaned by Diamond Isle Cleaners who clean using Enjo. Also the Children Centres Cowes, Ryde and Ventnor all have reduced chemicals used. So if your child has allergies or asthma look at your cleaning product. Call for a free demo and make the change today.

Save Money on Nappies The IW Real Nappy Network is here to help you make an informed nappy choice, offering a free two-week trial service to all Island parents with babies and toddlers. Did you know that from newborn to potty-training, a baby’s nappy will be changed about 6,000 times? Switching to reusable nappies - even part-time - could save your family around £400-£900; use them on a second baby and save even more!

Why not first try our great value newborn nappy hire service? It costs from as little as £6 per week, including accessories, with a 50% discount on the second nappy hire kit for twins.

Thinking of a gift for new parents? Ask about our range of great gifts, including Naturally Wight Skincare products and the innovative Nappymat changing mat (both Island-made and organic), plus reusable swim nappies and training pants for later on. Or you could opt for a gift voucher, and let the proud parents choose for themselves. (See ad page 34).

Recycling really does make a difference!

There are a few simple things you can do to keep up the good work and help to recycle more this year: Recycle at home - You can recycle all glass bottles and jars, stapled magazines, newspapers, and bagged textiles in the black recycling box which is collected fortnightly from the kerbside; and all cooked and uncooked food waste in the green organics bucket, collected weekly with your normal rubbish. Pass on the good news! - Let family, friends and neighbours know the facts about recycling. Got more to recycle? - check out our online A - Z for information on how to reduce, reuse and recycle other types of waste.

To order your free kerbside recycling boxes or find out more about how you can really make a difference, call us on 823777 or go online www.iwight.com/recycling
