Prayer The Lord’s Prayer

The Lord’s Prayer will be led in several languages. Please join in quietly with whatever language you are most comfortable using.

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven.

Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.

Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours,

now and forever, Amen.

Acts 2.1-21 The Coming of the Holy Spirit When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. Amazed and astonished, they asked, ‘Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs—in our own languages we hear them speaking about God’s deeds of power.’ All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, ‘What does this mean?’ But others sneered and said, ‘They are filled with new wine.’

But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them: ‘Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say. Indeed, these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o’clock in the morning. No, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel: “In the last days it will be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams. Even upon my slaves, both men and women, in those days I will pour out my Spirit; and they shall prophesy. And I will show portents in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and smoky mist. The sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the coming of the Lord’s great and glorious day. Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.” A reading from Rage and Hope: 75 Prayers for a Better World (Christian Aid, 2021)

One of the big stories of the church is what we tell and celebrate in the Pentecost season. The story speaks of God’s Spirit filling ordinary people who go on to build a new vision through the power of the Spirit. What is portrayed in the book of Acts isn’t just a storytelling of a world dominated by Caesars, where enmity and selfishness and greed keep men and women estranged and fearful; instead, these followers of Jesus’s message give witness to the vision of a re-imaged world. The book of Acts reminds us not to be bystanders to wrongdoing, inequality and corruption, but to become people willing to be empowered, to be changed, where the ending is far from fixed and the outcome is not predetermined. Instead, there is the thought that God is breaking through, and things can and will change as people respond to God’s interruption. (Dionne Gravesande)

HYMNS

SUNDAY, 23RD MAY 2021

Hymn CH4 489 ‘Come down, O Love Divine’

Come down, O love Divine, seek out this soul of mine, and visit it with your own ardour glowing; O Comforter, draw near, within my heart appear, and kindle it, your holy flame bestowing. O let it freely burn, till earthly passions turn to dust and ashes, in its heat consuming; and let your glorious light shine ever on my sight, and clothe me round, the while my path illuming. Let holy charity my outward vesture be, and lowliness become my inner clothing; true lowliness of heart, which takes the humbler part, and o’er its own shortcomings weeps with loathing. And so the yearning strong, with which the soul will long, shall far outpass the power of human telling; we cannot guess its grace, till we become the place wherein the Holy Spirit makes a dwelling.

Page 10: SUNDAY, 23RD MAY 2021

Hymn CH4 685 ‘For everyone born, a place at the table’

For everyone born, a place at the table, for everyone born, clean water and bread, a shelter, a space, a safe place for growing, for everyone born, a star overhead.

And God will delight when we are creators of justice and joy, yes, God will delight when we are creators of justice, justice and joy!

For woman and man, a place at the table, revising the roles, deciding the share, with wisdom and grace, dividing the power, for woman and man, a system that’s fair.

And God … For young and for old, a place at the table, a voice to be heard, a part in the song, the hands of a child in hands kind and wrinkled, for young and for old, the right to belong.

And God ….

For gay and for straight, a place at the table, a covenant shared, a welcoming space, a rainbow of race and gender and colour, for gay and for straight, the chalice of grace.

And God …. For everyone born, a place at the table, to live without fear, and simply to be, to work, to speak out, to witness and worship, for everyone born, the right to be free.

And God ….

Page 11: SUNDAY, 23RD MAY 2021

Hymn CH4 651 ’Sanctus and Benedictus’

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory, Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he, O blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, Hosanna in the highest, Hosanna in the highest.

Page 12: SUNDAY, 23RD MAY 2021

Hymn CH4 622 ‘We sing a love that sets all people free’

We sing a love that sets all people free, that blows like wind, that burns like scorching flame, enfolds the earth, springs up like water clear: come, living love, live in our hearts today. We sing a love that seeks another’s good, that longs to serve and not to count the cost, a love that, yielding, finds itself made new: come, caring love, live in our hearts today. We sing a love, unflinching, unafraid to be itself, despite another’s wrath, a love that stands alone and undismayed: come, strengthening love, live in our hearts today. We sing a love, that, wandering, will not rest until it finds its way, its home, its source, through joy and sadness pressing on refreshed: come, pilgrim love, live in our hearts today. We sing a burning, fiery, Holy Ghost, that seeks out shades of ancient bitterness, Transfiguring these, as Christ in every heart, come, joyful love, live in our hearts today.
