FAITH ATROPHY
During this past year, I learned that muscles can atrophy, that is, waste away from lack
of use. I have seen this in my brother as he has been in a hospital bed for a little more
than 10 months. When someone is in bed for an extended time, all the muscles that are
not being used rather quickly are absorbed into the body. Even the muscles for speech
and swallowing can shrink away. Rather quickly a person can be reduced to a little
more than their skeleton, due to a lack of exercise of the muscles.
The same is true with the gift of faith. Faith grows as we exercise it through prayer and works of charity. If
we fail to pray, if we fail to put love into action, our faith can be reduced and weakened. Just as we try to ar-
range a schedule for exercise, we need a similar schedule for our meetings with God. We need to make time
each day for our meetings with God. We need alone time with God for prayer. If we wish to deepen our
faith, we need to meet Jesus regularly in those special gifts, those “appointments” with Him, that we call the
Sacraments.
I find very helpful the simple but meaningful teaching from St. Mother Teresa of Calcutta. You will likely
recognize this saying as I have shared it with you a number of times in church. Mother Teresa said that si-
lence provides a setting for prayer. Prayer brings us faith. Faith brings us love. Love leads us to service.
And service brings us peace. Mother’s teaching is clear and simple.
Faith is a wonderful gift from God. It guides us in doing God’s will. We need to recall that prayer deepens
our faith. Without regular and meaningful prayer, our faith can suffer atrophy. Let us hold tight to the gift of
faith!
WELCOME FATHER YOHAN!
Our new parochial vicar (assistant to the pastor) is Father Yohan Serrano. He comes from Colombia. His
parents are Jesus Alberto Serrano Gil and Ana Cecilia Tarazona Carillo. He was born on July 22, 1978. He
began his studies for priesthood in Colombia in 2004 and continued his studies in the USA at Mount St.
Mary’s Seminary in Emmitsburg, Maryland and St. Mary’s College and Seminary in Baltimore. He studied
English at the College of Notre Dame in Maryland. In our Diocese, he has served in Passaic, Paterson and
Kinnelon. He earned a Master of Divinity degree in systematic theology from Mount St. Mary’s.
ASSISTANCE FOR CATHOLIC SCHOOLS
PLEASE CONTACT GOVERNOR MURPHY!
The New Jersey Catholic Conference, the support staff of the seven bishops of New Jersey, have sent us a
memo, asking us to contact the Office of the Governor, asking Governor Murphy to not veto the line item in
the state budget giving Catholic schools, transportation, school nursing, and STEM materials. He had re-
moved this aid in the budget he had sent to the legislators earlier this year. The legislature returned it to the
budget. These extra costs could be devastating for our Catholic school communities and their supporters.
Catholic schools are needed both in the cities and in the suburbs, but for different reasons in each locale.
Please visit the NJCC website for more information. The address is: njcatholic.org/faith-in-action.

SPECIAL COLLECTION NEXT WEEKEND
A Letter from the Bishop
Parishes throughout our Diocese are taking up a special
combined collection this month for three unique causes.
While each has a distinct mission, they are united in their
service to God’s people.
Catholic University of America is a renowned universi-
ty and an institution that plays a critical role in the for-
mation of future leaders in the Church. Your support
helps make funds available for financially deserving stu-
dents and provides them with opportunities for academic
and spiritual growth.
Evangelization is a priority for our Church and com-
municating the Gospel message is what makes the Cath-
olic Communications Campaign such an important
source of information and outreach. Your participation in
the collection provides grants for local and international
communications projects that highlight the joy that
comes from being Catholic.
With the help of the Black and Indian Missions, Catho-
lic outreach is made possible on reservations, rural areas
and inner cities throughout our country. Your support
provides the presence of missionaries in African Ameri-
can, Native American and Alaska Native schools and
religious education programs. It also funds the training of
catechists, deacons and seminarians to preach the Gospel
in these communities.
Please join with your fellow brothers and sisters in Christ
and generously support this special combined collection
when it is taken up in your parish.
THE GREATEST NEED
The world’s greatest need is not more Christians,
but more Christians who practice their Christianity.

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL THIS PAST WEEK
What do you like best about VBS?
“The bible stories are really fun. I like the snacks. See-
ing my friends at church. The group counselors. Music,
I like music the best. Games, because we get to go out-
side. I like doing the crafts; we made a necklace with a
cross.”
Where do you see God at VBS?
“In the church. Outside. In my friends. The group help-
ers. In music.”
Some notable quotes:
“Shhh . . . This is God’s house. No, this is God’s office.”
(upon entering Parish Center)
“The church is God’s home and the rest is His play-
ground.”
HOW MUCH TIME DO YOU SPEND WITH GOD?
Minutes! Minutes! Minutes! How many commercials do
we hear every day advertising “free minutes” or “endless
minutes?” While the cell phone companies are making us
all aware of every minute that we spend talking or tex-
ting, do we keep track of the minutes that we spend with
God?
As much as some companies might advertise “free
minutes,” the fact is that the minutes of our day are actu-
ally a free gift from God alone. Every day God gives
each of us 1,440 minutes -– no strings attached -– no
contract to sign. What do we do with those minutes? Do
we give any of them back to God? Consider these op-
tions:
Can you spend 1 minute every morning thanking God for
His blessings and asking Him how He wants you to use
your gifts? Can you spend 10 minutes at the beginning or
end of each day in quiet prayer, spiritual reading and re-
flection? Can you spend 30 minutes one day a week at-
tending a weekday Mass? Can you commit to giving God
60 minutes every week for Sunday Mass?
Try this test for one week. Keep track of the time you
spend with God and the time you spend talking, texting,
surfing the Internet, and watching TV. Considering that
God gives you 1,440 free minutes every day, is He get-
ting His fair share back from you?
THE BEACON
Do You Receive The Beacon?
If you receive The Beacon, your support to help under-
write the monthly subscription bill would be greatly ap-
preciated. The annual subscription fee is $29.50. A
check, made out to St. Lawrence Church, can be mailed
to the Parish Office or dropped in the collection basket at
Mass.
Would You Like to Subscribe or Cancel The Beacon?

O LORD, BE MY HELP
Today we encounter readings that draw us into the mys-
tery of suffering and death. In the past few years we have
witnessed the devastation of life and property through
earthquakes and hurricanes. So many lifted their lament
to God, simply asking, “Why?” This is an honest expres-
sion of anger toward a God who we believe is the giver
of life. When we lose a loved one, we can wonder why
the presence of Christ is not enough to make that person
rise, even from death, as did the little girl in today’s Gos-
pel passage. Again we raise our voices and ask, “Why?”
At moments such as these, let us make the prayer of the
psalmist our own: “Hear, O LORD, and have pity on me;
O LORD, be my helper.” Let us pray that our mourning
will one day be turned into dancing.
TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — God did not make death, nor does God
rejoice in the destruction of the living (Wisdom 1:13-15;
2:23-24).
Psalm — I will praise you, Lord, for you have rescued
me (Psalm 30).
Second Reading — Your abundance should supply the
needs of the others (2 Corinthians 8:7, 9, 13-15).
Gospel — Your faith has saved you (Mark 5:21-43

NEXT HEALING MASS
Tuesday, July 17, at 7:00 pm (Rosary at 6:30 pm)
Stewardship is a Way of Life.
Tithing is God’s Plan for Giving.
Biblically a tithe means 10%. All are asked to consider tithing
and return 10% of our income to the Lord (5% to the parish,
5% to God’s other charities) in gratitude. The spiritual practice
of tithing disposes us to make God first in every area of our
lives! The aim is to secure not the tithe, but the tither. Not the
gift, but the giver — for God!
Tithing Income June 24, 2018 $11,533.00
Tithing Income June 25, 2017 $10,891.00
Reflection: 2 CORINTHIANS 8:14
“…as a matter of equality your abundance at the present time
should supply their want, so that their abundance may supply
your want, that there may be equality.”
We are responsible not only for our own lives, but for the lives
of those around us. It is important that we not only grow, nur-
ture and share our gifts, but that we also teach our children and
encourage others to do the same. This is the communal aspect
of our Catholic faith. We are the “Body of Christ”. We are
called to be dependent on each other and not live in isolation.
FROM FATHER NICK: “Thank you for your faithfulness to
making a return to the Lord for all that He has done for you!”
A TESTIMONY FROM A MEMBER OF ST. JOHN THE
EVANGELIST CHURCH IN PHILADELPHIA: “I was
visiting with my family in my home country and when I re-
turned, I found that my envelopes were all backed up. I filled
each one with the tithe for that week, without thinking about
whether I’d have enough money to cover my expenses. I just
said: ‘Lord, this belongs to You.‘ I’ve got heart trouble and I
have to buy my medicine because my insurance does not cover
it. When I went to the doctor, he gave me enough samples of
the medicine so that I did not have to buy any. How the Lord
keeps His promises!”

My Dear Friends,
In these past two months, you have accepted me into this amazing
parish and have shared your family and your faith with me. We did
not have too much time to get to know each other and now we have
to say goodbye.
God puts people on our way for a specific purpose. We will know
this plan when we meet God on the other side of our lives. We must
thank Him for all His gifts, especially those we receive every day.
Such a gift was the time that I spent with you. Here, at St. Law-
rence, I met many kind people with an open heart. I received from
you a lot of friendliness, openness and joy. Thank you Fr. Nick,
seminarian Adam, deacons Bill and Frank. Thank you to the staff
and everyone involved in the life of this parish.
It was a great honor for me to be part of your parish family! How
good is God that He let me be here with you! No matter where we
are, we are still a family: we have the same Father (who is in heav-
en) and the same Mother (the Church). The one who believes is
never alone!
Thank you for everything. Keep me in your prayers.
God bless,
Fr. Michal
