From Our Pastor, Fr. Fausto ...

JULY 9, 2017

My Dear Friends, Today’s Gospel is so consoling, especially when we

suffer the summer or holiday blues... “Come to me, all you who are weary and find life burdensome,” Jesus said. Let us follow His advice, and instead of closing our hearts to all life, let us open our hearts to Jesus, especially in the Holy Eucharist, when He becomes the body of our suffering bodies and joy in our sad moments. If you have tried everything and you have failed miserably, try Jesus in Holy Communion.

The mysterious sign or miracle of the Holy Eucharist has the power to keep us spellbound and mesmerized in the depths of our minds and souls. I am happy to bring again to you the explanation of this “Sacred Banquet,” the “Holy Mass.” I wrote sometime ago, in this bulletin, in answer to an inquiry from a young parishioner, who asked me to explain in simple terms why we call the Eucharist a sacrifice. She asked: “I thought it was a banquet?” It is both! But how can we explain in simple human words a divine reality so inscrutable and mysterious? It seems that there is no simple way to do it!

But we may have a glimpse into this Sacrament if we go back to the way the ancient Hebrews worshiped God in Jerusalem (or the idols in the case of the Gentiles).

Imagine an ancient Roman father whose daughter has been chronically sick, and so she was thought to be under the spell of an evil idol. To placate such a superhuman enemy, the father would go with family, friends and slaves to the temple of that idol and bring, for instance, a lamb to show his willingness to deprive himself (sacrifice) of a valuable animal, in order that the evil spell on his daughter would end.

As we all know, a mammal which loses all blood dies, and so the ancient priest, after having first lighted up a wooden fire over a stone altar set in the middle of the temple, would cut the throat of a lamb, letting the blood go down a trench around the base of the altar, so that the soul of the animal would drain away, causing the death of the animal, which would then be put on the fire; the sweetbreads and skin would be burned completely, the edible parts would be removed after barbecuing, and divided between the priest and the family.

A sacrificial banquet would then follow at the home of the Roman father. The priests usually sold their sacrificed meat to local butcher shops, which sold it at a big discount, because there was no refrigeration in those times. By the way, this custom of selling the meat, sacrificed to the idols, caused great controversy among the first Christians, splitting the Gentile converts, accustomed to this cheap meat, from the original Christians, who were all Jews, and accustomed to eating only the meat sacrificed to the Almighty in the temple of Jerusalem. For the Jews, the sacrificial meat banquet was the fitting conclusion of the worship just done, and a continuation of the sacrifice offered to God. They felt that eating the meat sacrificed to the idols in their Pagan Temple was idolatry.

PSALTER WEEK II

The first Church Council of Jerusalem (49 AD) was concerned about this matter, and other Gentile practices as well, and a decree was promulgated saying: “It is the decision of the Holy Spirit, and of us, not to place on you any burden beyond these necessities, namely, to abstain from meat sacrificed to idols, from blood…” So the separation of blood from the animal was The Sacrifice, and eating of the meat was The Banquet. This is why we speak of the sacrifice of the Cross, because as the Gospel of John tells us: “...one soldier thrust his lance into His side, and immediately blood and water flowed out” (Jn 19:34); Jesus’ blood, His lifeline, was separated from His Body.

And now, finally, we may understand why Jesus, at the Last Supper, separated His body (bread) from His blood (wine) into two separate blessings (Mk 14:22-25), as He had already prophesied in his talk in John 6, which shocked his audience in Capernaum to the core of their unbelieving hearts: “The bread that I will give is my flesh… whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood

has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day… Many of his disciples were murmuring about this. Jesus said to them, ‘does this shock you?’ As a result of this talk, many disciples no longer accompanied him.” So the Mass is both a sacrifice and a banquet!... As I’ve told you, it is not easy to explain it in simple terms! Again a question frequently asked is: “Does the Eucharist forgive sin?” Certainly it does! It has been the constant tradition of the Church that receiving Holy Communion does forgive sins. The Church,

in concluding the liturgy of the 9th Sunday of Ordinary time prays: “Lord… Make us Holy by sharing your life with us and by this Eucharist forgive our sins.” But it is also a constant tradition of the Church that an un-repented deadly sin is an impediment to receive Holy Communion: “Therefore whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord unworthily will have to answer for the Body and Blood of the Lord” (1 Cor 11:27). Because of the severe upbringing between the 1st and 2nd Vatican Councils, owed no doubt to the subtle influence of the Jansenist heresy on the Catholic Church in the past 300 years, we thought that we must have all sins forgiven in the confessional before receiving Jesus at Mass.

This is why in Italy, before Vatican II, we used to hear confessions even during Mass, so that there would have been no chance of committing even a venial sin before Holy Communion. Admittedly, such ultra-rigid Jansenist tradition was a distortion of our true doctrine, and the 2nd Vatican Council did help us to correct it. This also explains the reduced attendance to the Sacrament of Penance which we have experienced in the last thirty years. But again, please remember that the Sacrament of Penance does forgive all sins, mortal and venial, and it is one of the most effective means of achieving holiness, repentance and humility in our Spiritual lives. Please take advantage of our priests’ availability for daily confessions; do not live with mortal sin on your souls! The daily schedule at 11:30 a.m. gives you all a chance to

be reconciled with God, even if you work, because it is scheduled around lunch time. In case of need, just call a priest for an appointment. God can call us at any time and in any place; let us be prepared to meet Him with a forgiven and stainless soul.

Next Sunday, July 16, is the Feast of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, the Lady of the Scapular. The Blessed Mother appeared to an English Carmelite Friar, St. Simon Stock, and promised that no one would see the flames of Hell, if they piously live and die wearing the scapular (an outside special vest that Friars wear). In the past, many Popes have approved such apparitions, and recent Popes

have even allowed the substitution of the Scapular with the Medal, which I wear around my neck day and night. Wear your Scapular or Medal!

The Spirit dwells in us (second reading). We, therefore, are life-givers! In fact, we will either spread life or death. There is no neutrality. It is an easier yoke (gospel) to both embrace and spread life than death, because we were made

that way. We were made to be life-givers.

Mary, I beg you, let your mercy be with me. Let love for you always be with me, and the care for me be always with you. Let the cry of my need, as long as it persists, be with you, and the care of your goodness, as long as I need it, be with me. Let joy in your blessedness be always with me, and compassion for my wretchedness, where I need it, be with you. Amen. St. Anselm of Canterbury

NATIONAL CATHOLIC PLEDGE TO END THE DEATH PENALTY

The faithful are invited to join Bishop Frank J. Dewane in signing a national pledge to end the use of the death penalty. The Catholic Mobilizing Network's National Catholic Pledge to End the Death Penalty was announced in Washington, D.C. on May 9, 2017. As Chair of the USCCB Committee on Domestic Justice and Human Development, the Bishop was one of the first signatories who have committed to advocate, educate and pray for the end to the use of the death penalty. THE SPIRIT IS WITHIN US Does the Holy Spirit dwell within you? If you are a baptized and confirmed Catholic the answer is a resounding “yes.” However, a better question might be “Is the Holy Spirit

alive within you?” We are all gifted with the Holy Spirit, but how we respond to that gift varies immensely from one person to another. St. Paul says as much in the Second Reading from his letter to the Romans. Paul says, “Whoever does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to Him. If the Spirit of the one who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, (He) will give life to your mortal bodies also.” This produces a number of other questions for us as Catholics. Given that the Spirit is within us, but does the Spirit guide us to Jesus? Are we prepared to be more like Jesus? Are we willing to be His disciple? And especially, is the Spirit working in our hearts? It is there for each of us, to strengthen us and fortify us and to be with us always. However, we have to accept and embrace that fact. Living a life of stewardship is one of the ways we can do that. As our Bishops have told us in their pastoral letter on stewardship, “Stewardship is how you respond to Jesus’ call to discipleship and holiness.” It is a challenge for sure, but it is within the grasp and the capability of each of us. We may have to work at it, but if we trust in God it is most definitely possible.

Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
