Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Everything You Always Wanted to Ask about Your Faith but were Afraid to Ask Contributed by Fr. Rey Sarmiento

Question: “Why do I have to go to a priest for confession? Why can’t I go straight to God?” Answer:

To help us understand the importance of going to a priest to confession, we need to understand first what sin does. St. Paul in his letters to the Romans and Corinthians says, “…so we, though many, are one body in Christ-and individually parts of one another” (Romans 12:5); “If [one] part suffers, all the parts suffer with it; if one part is honored, all the parts share its joy” (1 Cor 12:26). These verses allow us to understand that when we sin, we not only damage our relationship with God, but also with other members of the church. The Catechism affirms this, “Sin is before all else an of-fense against God…At the same time it damages communion with the Church” (1440). When we sinned, we therefore need to reconcile both with God and with the Church (1440). We need to be clear, though, that only God has the authority to forgive sins (CCC 1441; see Mark 2:7). But Jesus, the God-Man, entrusted His apostles with a “ministry of reconciliation”: “And all this is from God, who has reconciled us to himself through Christ and given us the ministry of reconciliation” (2 Cor 5:18). After the Resurrection, Jesus appeared to his disciples, breathes the Holy Spirit on them: “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, ‘Receive the holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained” (John 20: 19-23). In this scene, Christ instituted the Sacrament of Reconciliation, and made His apostles the ministers of it.

Can we go straight to God to confess our sins? The ordinary way that Jesus wanted us to have our grave sins forgiven is through the Sacrament of Confession. There are, however, extreme circum-stances where God may forgive grave sins outside of confession. These, however, are extraordi-nary. We can confess our venial sins directly to God, but it is a healthy spiritual practice to have a regular examination of conscience on how well we have lived a life of Christ, and go to confession. For a baptized non-Catholic who have no recourse to the Sacrament of Reconciliation, the person can be forgiven of their sins outside of confession if the person has sincere sorrow for their sins. If they are in danger of death, they may receive the Sacrament. Why go to confession if one can be forgiven without it? There are many good reasons why we go to confession. Some of which are: (1) it is God who commanded us to confess our sins to one another; (2) it is the ordinary way that Christ wants our sins to be forgiven; (3) we learn humility by confessing our sins to another person; (4) we reconcile not only with God, but with the Church, and (5) we can feel assured that God has forgiven our sins by hearing the words of absolution.

Chapter 30: Blind Spots

Do we really see things as they really are? When you looked at a pho-tograph when you were young, and thinking how you hated it, but 40-50 years later thinking how great you looked? We don’t see ourselves as we really are at times. We have blind spots created by our past history; some are tainted by our life, people and environment. PEACEMAKERS We are Peacemakers We are called to be peacemakers. Six months after the recent election, we are called to reflect on what kind of world we want. We dream of a better, more peaceful world for our families. Fear sometimes inhabits us as we seek to move forward. But imagine our ancestors – Moses especially – who was told to send his people into the unknown. He was standing on a precipice, looking into the unknown future, needing to make a choice. Moses said, “Uvarcharta Chayim” Choose Life. In order to find peace, we need to choose life. Martin Luther King said, “We are now faced with the fact that the future is today. We are confronted with the fierce urgency of now. In this life we have a choice and we must not neglect to make the moral choice.” We are at a moral crossroads and we must not let fear inhibit our pathway to peace. We need to safeguard our Christian values - that ours is a just society wherein all must be as-sured of their fundamental rights. It is the teaching of the ancient prophets that “few are guilty but all are responsible.” We need to re-member that we must act for justice to occur because if we are silent, greater atrocities can occur. We must all stand together to reaffirm the values we hold dear, to empower one another, to embrace hope, and to Choose Life. Taken from sermon of Rabbi Ruth Zlotnik, Seattle, Washington, October 2016

New Altar Server Needed! Dear Parents/Guardians of Fourth grade students or Higher grade:We would like to invite your child (ren) to become Altar Servers for the Queen of Apostles Parish. I hope you encourage and allow to them to join in this service. It will take their time from both you and them. However, it will be a beautiful way for your child (ren) to express their active participation in the life of the Church and learn how to become a responsible member of the church. I hope that you consider our invitation and share it with your child (ren). The plan is to have the training on August 19th from 8:30 AM to 12:00 PM. After the training has been completed, your child (ren) will “shadow” one of the current more Senior level Servers to gain a better sense of this Ministry. If you and your child (ren) are interested, please contact the Parish office at 408.253.7560. God Bless!
