WELCOME TO FIRST LUTHERAN CHURCH

We are part of the New England Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. This page is to help acquaint you with First Lutheran and our order of service.

The order of service is in this booklet. The hymns numbered 1-569 are found in the green hymnal, Lutheran Book of Worship, which is in front of you. Hymns numbered 601-802 are in the blue hymnal, With One Voice.

Please fill out the communion cards, which you received with the worship folder. If you have any special prayer requests, write them on the bottom of the communion card (please print any names). The ushers will collect them following the sermon. If you do not have any prayer requests, place your communion card in the offering plate. There is also room to provide any additional information you may wish to share with us. The reverse side is a sign-up sheet for groups and events happening at First Lutheran.

While our goal is to have children in worship, there is an area in the library for children to play. It is a self-service area so there will be no attendants. Parents may bring their children to the nursery area as needed and return to worship when able. Please remember to clean up before you leave.

If the younger children get restless we have “Quiet Bags” which can be found on a bench behind the last center row of pews. In these bags are quiet activities: books, crayons and coloring books. Also located on the bench are word searches based on the bible lessons.

We invite everyone who is baptized and who truly believes that Christ is present to join us for Holy Communion. Children are invited to come for a blessing. The bread will be given to you first. Please hold your hand out. You may take wine from the chalice (the common cup). We share the chalice because that is what Christ and his disciples did. When you drink from the chalice, please take it or guide it with your hands. Or you may take wine from an individual glass (when you come forward, please take an empty glass from the tray in the center aisle). There is grape juice in the filled glasses in that tray, if that is your preference. Place your empty glass in the tray that follows the pouring chalice.

After the service, please sign the guest book on your way out of the sanctuary and feel free to take the available materials.

There is Sunday School September - early June. Everyone else meets in the Chapel for opening before going off to individual classes.

We hope that you will worship with us again. If you would like to be on our mailing list or if there is anything that we can do for you, please speak to the Pastor, any First Lutheran member, or give us a call.

WE PREPARE FOR WORSHIP

INTRODUCTION

The archangel Michael is pictured as a prince and a general of the

heavenly army, defeating the dragon (the ancient serpent, the devil,

Satan). It is important, though, to see in Revelation 12:11 that God's

victory ultimately comes by Jesus' death and the testimony of his

followers. The power of God's truth gives us confidence in the face of

evil on earth, even in the face of our own death.

Silent Prayer

Prelude: “I Love to Tell the Story” William G Fischer

/arr. Lucy Ann Warriner

Dedication of Evangelical Lutheran Worship

Brothers and sisters in Christ: Today in our gathering we bless God for Evangelical Lutheran Worship, and we pray for God’s blessing upon its use in our midst. Rejoice in the LORD, you righteous; praise is fitting for the upright. Sing for the LORD a new song; play your instrument skillfully with joyful sounds. For your word, O LORD, is right, and faithful are all your works. Surely, our heart rejoices in you, for in your holy name we put our trust. Let us pray. Gracious and glorious God, the strength of our ancestors and the hope for our youth: Blessed are you for gathering us into a community of praise and prayer, comfort and joy. Blessed are you for the gift of this book. Blessed are you for its writers and translators, composers and artists, editors and designers. Send your Spirit on all who will worship with this book. May its words deepen our knowledge of your Son, its music bind us to believers around the world, and its art illume our faith in you, O God, blessed Trinity, to whom be all honor and praise, now and forever. Amen.

PRAYER OF THE DAY The presiding minister leads the prayer of the day. Let us pray. A brief silence is kept before the prayer. Everlasting God, you have wonderfully established the ministries of angels and mortals. Mercifully grant that as Michael and the angels contend against the cosmic forces of evil, so by your direction they may help and defend us here on earth, through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God whom we worship and praise with angels and archangels and all the company of heaven, now and forever. Amen

GOD SPEAKS TO US The assembly is seated.

FIRST READING: Daniel 10:10–14; 12:1–3 The reading may be announced:

A reading from Daniel.

Daniel trembles in the presence of an angel. That angel tells the prophet

about the good and terrible future when the dead will be resurrected and

the archangel Michael will usher in the deliverance of the nation.

10But then a hand touched me and roused me to my hands and knees. 11He said to me, "Daniel, greatly beloved, pay attention to the words that I am going to speak to you. Stand on your feet, for I have now been sent to you." So while he was speaking this word to me, I stood up trembling. 12He said to me, "Do not fear, Daniel, for from the first day that you set your mind to gain understanding and to humble yourself before your God, your words have been heard, and I have come because of your words. 13But the prince of the kingdom of Persia opposed me twenty-

one days. So Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me, and I left him there with the prince of the kingdom of Persia, 14and have come to help you understand what is to happen to your people at the end of days. For there is a further vision for those days." At that time Michael, the great prince, the protector of your people, shall arise. There shall be a time of anguish, such as has never occurred since nations first came into existence. But at that time your people shall be delivered, everyone who is found written in the book. 2Many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt. 3Those who are wise shall shine like the brightness of the sky, and those who lead many to righteousness, like the stars forever and ever.

The reading may be concluded:

Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. PSALM: Psalm 103:1–5, 20–22 Bless the LORD, | O my soul,* and all that is within me, bless his | holy name. 2Bless the LORD, | O my soul,* and forget not | all his benefits. R 3He forgives | all your sins* and heals all | your infirmities; 4he redeems your life | from the grave* and crowns you with mercy and | lovingkindness; 5he satisfies you | with good things,* and your youth is renewed | like an eagle's. 20Bless the LORD, you angels of his, you mighty ones who | do his bidding,* and hearken to the voice | of his word. 21Bless the LORD, all | you his hosts,* you ministers of his who | do his will. 22Bless the LORD, all you works of his, in all places of | his dominion;* bless the LORD, | O my soul. SECOND READING: Revelation 12:7–12 The reading may be announced:

A reading from Revelation.

Armed with the power of God, Michael and the angels of God fight those

armed with the power of evil, the devil and the devil's angels. The "blood

of the Lamb," our crucified Lord Jesus, gives Michael the power to force

the devil from a place in heaven. 7And war broke out in heaven; Michael and his angels fought against the dragon. The dragon and his angels fought back, 8but they were defeated, and there was no longer any place for them in heaven. 9The great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the Devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him. 10Then I heard a loud voice in heaven, proclaiming, "Now have come the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Messiah, for the accuser of our comrades has been thrown down, who accuses them day and night before our God. 11But they have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, for they did not cling to life even in the face of death. 12Rejoice then, you heavens and those who dwell in them! But woe to the earth and the sea, for the devil has come down to you with great wrath, because he knows that his time is short!"

The reading may be concluded:

Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION The assembly stands to welcome the gospel.

GOSPEL: Luke 10:17–20

The gospel is announced.

The holy gospel according to Luke. Glory to you, O Lord.

The missionary church ("the seventy-two") is given magnificent power.

Greater than this gift of power over the enemy, however, is the gift of

salvation: their names are written in heaven. 17The seventy returned with joy, saying, "Lord, in your name even the demons submit to us!" 18He said to them, "I watched Satan fall from heaven like a flash of lightning. 19See, I have given you authority to tread on snakes and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy; and nothing will hurt you. 20Nevertheless, do not rejoice at this, that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven."

The gospel concludes:

The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. The assembly is seated.

CHILDREN’S MESSAGE The children are invited to come forward. SERMON Silence for reflection follows the sermon.

HYMN OF THE DAY The assembly stands to proclaim the word of God in song.

“When in Our Music God Is Glorified” (Red # 851)

CREED I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell.* On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen *Or, He descended to the dead.

The assembly kneels as able.

PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION The assisting minister invites the assembly into prayer.

With the whole people of God in Christ Jesus, let us pray for the church, those in need, and all of God’s creation. A brief silence.

Holy and just God, awaken the people of your church from our self-serving behavior. Stir us to advocate for and to serve people who are most in need of your mercy. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great.

Page 11: Sunday, September 29, 2013 Michael and All Angels Dedication of Evangelical Lutheran ...files.ctctcdn.com/9dce3bb2101/2a4e7ea1-f03b-47ae-baf8... · 2015-08-23 · its use in our midst

Work with food producers, textile workers, scientists, and others who harvest resources from creation to be made into usable products. Feed and clothe all people through their efforts. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great. Confound our ways of living that do not embrace the life that you have shown us in Christ. Execute justice on behalf of all people who are cast aside by the world. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great. Attend to those who experience neglect or scorn in their communities because of age, disease, or physical ability. Lift up people who feel less than whole in any way. We pray for…. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great. Establish and encourage partnerships among congregations, food banks, clothing closets, and other service ministries. Strengthen the work we do together for others. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great.

Here other intercessions may be offered. We remember all those celebrating birthdays and anniversaries this week and for those in the military… Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great. Living God, giving thanks for all messengers who have made your salvation known especially Michael and all angels, whom we commemorate today, we pray you to shape our lives, that we may make you known to others. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great. The presiding minister concludes the prayer. Into your hands, O Holy One, we entrust all for whom we pray, confident in your abundant and abiding mercy; through Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen. PEACE The assembly greets each other in the peace of the risen Christ.

The peace of the Lord be with you always. And also with you. The people may greet one another with a sign of Christ’s peace, and may

say, “Peace be with you,” or similar words.

Peace be with you.

CHURCH FAMILY CONCERNS OFFERING The Offering is gathered for the mission of the church, including the care

of those in need.

ANTHEM After the offering is gathered, the assembly stands. Bread, wine, money,

and other gifts may be brought forward.

OFFERING SONG

OFFERING PRAYER Merciful God, as grains of wheat scattered upon the hills were gathered together to become one bread, so let your church be gathered together from the ends of the earth into your kingdom, for yours is the glory through Jesus Christ, now and forever. Amen.

COMMUNION IS SHARED

DIALOGUE The presiding minister greets the assembly and invites all present to give

thanks.

The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. It is indeed right and salutary that we should at all times and in all places offer thanks and praise to you, O Lord, holy Father, through Christ our Lord; who on this day overcame death and the grave, and by his glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting life. And so, with the Church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn:

THANKSGIVING AT THE TABLE …both now and forever. Amen.

SHREWD AS CROOKS Calculate the cost of discipleship; find the missing coin; be as shrewd as the crooks of this age. Luke's gospel focuses at length on our relationship with money. It can do such good, but at the same time so easily insinuate its way into the place of God. The story of the dishonest manager who has been squandering his master's property immediately follows that of the son who squandered his inheritance and made his way home. The dishonest manager practices creative accounting to make friends with the master's debtors, slashing the amounts they owe, so that the debtors will invite him home once he loses his job. Jesus commends him for acting shrewdly—down to earth. Canny, in contrast with the "children of light" (Luke 16:8). (Why is it that criminals devote the utmost care and skill to their plots, while faithful people seem hard-pressed to use our wits in efforts to do good?) Then Jesus tells us, "Make friends for yourselves by means of dishonest wealth so that when it is gone, they may welcome you into the eternal homes" (v. 9). Dirty your hands! Take a risk! Regard whatever money you have as a trust from God. Use it in service of relationship, with an eye toward being welcomed into heaven. Later Jesus will invite himself to the home of Zacchaeus and bring to life the story of the dishonest manager. Some people grumble, but Zacchaeus promises to give half his possessions to the poor and to pay back four times the amount he has defrauded others. Salvation has come to his house, and he cannot help but respond in his happiness. Is Jesus encouraging us to think like crooks? It's one way of injecting humor and loosening up some of our anxiety over money. As we strive to discern the true riches it's never too late to do justice, love kindness, and walk—it's the same word—shrewdly with our God. From Sundays and Seasons.com. COMMEMORATIONS FOR THE WEEK Sunday, September 29, 2013 Michael and All Angels On this festival day the church ponders the richness and variety of God's created order and the limits of human knowledge of it. The scriptures speak of angels (the word means "messengers") who worship God in heaven, and in both testaments angels speak for God on earth. They are remembered most vividly as they appear to the shepherds and announce the birth of the Savior. Michael is an angel whose name appears in Daniel as the heavenly being who leads the faithful dead to God's throne on the day of resurrection. In Revelation, Michael fights in a cosmic battle against Satan. From Sundays and Seasons.com. Copyright 2013 Augsburg Fortress. All rights reserved. The house that Gloria Luster and her son Randy live in had a serious fire. Gloria said that they lost everything. They have housing. And we can work with their longer term needs as we figure out what they are. But right now, Gloria says, they need clothing:

Randy is a size 36/34 for pants. XL for shirts Randy's son is a 3T She did not indicate anything else for herself. If you can bring anything like this, or a gift card, to church, we can arrange to get it to them. Otherwise contact the church office and we will figure out a way to get it to them.
