16 Let your work be manifest to your servants, and your glorious power to their children. 17 Let the favor of the Lord our God be upon us, and prosper for us the work of our hands— O prosper the work of our hands! Psalm 90: 16-17

God’s Work, Our Hands

I’m not sure I’m really ready for fall. Don’t get me wrong, it’s one of my favorite seasons. It just doesn’t seem like summer should be ending already. But Rally Sunday and the beginning of our fall schedule is less than two weeks away!

Once again this year we are going to join ELCA congregations across the

country for God’s Work, Our Hands, a weekend of service in the name of Jesus. This year we are going to sort and pack medical supplies for Global Health Ministries (www.ghm.org), a Lutheran ministry based in the Twin Cities that distributes critically needed medical supplies to a variety of countries around the world. We will again be working with our Wildfire partner churches---St. James, First of Crystal, Valley of Peace, House of Hope, Holy Nativity, Faith Lilac Way and Elim---so it’s not only a great opportunity to serve but also a chance to get to know members of some of our neighboring congregations. There will be work for all ages and abilities so please join us if you can!

We will meet at Cross of Glory around 8:30 and carpool up to the GHM

office in Fridley (7831 Hickory St NE) or you can just meet us there. We’ll work from 9 to noon before returning to Cross of Glory.

If your schedule allows it one of our Wildfire churches, House of Hope

Lutheran Church in New Hope, has invited all of us to join them later in the day (3 to 8) for their Octoberfest celebration as well.

God’s Work, Our Hands is a great way to start the year as God’s people in

service to God’s beloved world. Please join us if you can! Peace, Pastor Doug

Happenings around the Building:

Updates from your leadership

Your staff and elected leaders have been busy throughout the summer on a variety of building-related matters at Cross of Glory. Here are some updates:

Organ:

As you know, we are in the final phase of our organ restoration. Once the manuals (keyboards) and stops from the console are complete they will be installed along with the last of the pipes. Once everything is back together there will be a process of integration and final voicing. Worship, Music and Arts is in conversation with Allan about a fall concert or even a series to celebrate the completion of the project.

A Greener Building with New Lighting:

After a visit and analysis by the Center for Energy and Environment, it was determined that Cross of Glory was available for significant rebates and zero interest financing on some major lighting upgrades around the building. Lights in the sanctuary, entry areas, fellowship hall and the Apostle Paul room will be upgraded from florescent to LED. The total cost is $29,353. We will receive an immediate $5,300 rebate and the remainder will be financed at zero percent for 5 years. The monthly payment should be very close to the energy savings so there

New Office Schedule

After trying it out for two summers and in consultation with the staff, the Personnel committee has decided to close the office on Fridays year round. The Cross of Glory office schedule will be Monday through Thursday, 8 am to 4 pm.

will be minimal new money expended (and of course the savings will continue beyond that point). The work will commence shortly.

Security System:

The current security system has reached the end of its life cycle. The Council is very close to making a decision on a bid for upgrading the system. In addition to less false alarms and greater security, we will be moving to a computer based card access system which will give us much better control over building access.

New Multi-Purpose Room:

After dialog with our partner congregation, Faith Healing, we will be making some changes to the Apostle Paul room so that it can be used more fully during the week. Faith Healing will continue to worship in that space Sunday mornings at 11 but they will be setting up and taking down their chairs each week. They will modify their stage setup a bit and add protection to the sound booth in back so we can use the space for youth activities and a variety of other purposes. In addition the low hanging florescent lights will be replaced by LED fixtures mounted to the ceiling as part of our lighting upgrade.

Sunday Safari Search Weekly Children’s Choir, Dance Class & Bible Lesson

(For Children ages 6-12) Sundays, 10:30am ~ 12:00pm

September 13 – December 20, 2015 Because of the success of our summer performing arts camp we are happy

to offer a weekly program that will help children develop their skills in singing and dance. A vital part of the program will also be a Bible lesson that will give the children a foundation of Christian education. Once a month the children will perform in the worship services at Cross of Glory. They will also participate in a large Christmas concert on December 20,, 2015.

We are looking for children who love to sing and dance and will be

committed to consistently attend on a weekly basis.

Garage Sale Report

Some people were not at church the Sunday after the Garage Sale so they did not hear how good we did. Our profit after expenses is $17,557.00 which is $1,000.00 more than last year. Everyone should be very proud of the success of our 26th sale! If anyone has a suggestion of how the money should be spent, please let me know. In the next few months, I will bring the suggestions to the Council so we can make a decision.

Hello from the CEAP Quilters!

We will be back at work on Monday, September 14th from 9:00am to 12:00 Noon. On many Mondays, we have 42 women, pinning and tying and sewing and having a good time! From September, 2014 through May, 2015 we finished 505 quilts and 901 items of children’s clothing and gave 8,355 volunteer hours. This is a fun group and we invite you to stop in and look us over. You may want to join us! We ask for donations of fabric that is washable and suitable for our quilts, as well as yarn and sheets. We need to purchase batting and other supplies, so we would appreciate your monetary support also. Our quilts keep people warm and they are distributed by CEAP (Community Emergency Assistance Program). Thank you for your support. Ruth Lunquist Facilitator, Ceap Quilters

Loaves and Fishes

Lutheran Church of the Master has made the decision that they will no longer be a site for Loaves and Fishes as of Wednesday, August 26. This means the last time Cross of Glory will be serving there is Tuesday, August 25.

I am looking into serving at Brunswick United Methodist Church at 6122 42nd Avenue North in Crystal. They serve on Wednesday and Thursday evenings between 5:00 and 7:30pm. I will let everyone know when I have worked out the details. Thanks for helping serve in the past.

50 + and Friends

September brings another cancelation. With only 28 people wanting to go, I had to cancel our boat trip on the Steamboat Minnehaha

around Lafayette Bay of Lake Minnetonka. As of now, we only have 26 planning to go on the October trip to Belle Plaine and Jordon. Unless more sign up, we will have to cancel that trip also.

We have 20 people going to Black Bear Casino on October 4 and 5. It will be a good chance to see some leaf color on the ride up and back.

I have reserved 30 places for Tourco’s Christmas party at Turtle Lake on Wednesday, December 2. As usual there will be lunch, entertainment and time to try your favorite games.

We are making plans for next year. Since there is a problem filling trips, I may schedule fewer outings for next year ~ mainly plays or concerts. Let me know your thoughts on the subject.
