• WeshouldfocusontheobjectivesofHajjandseektorealizethem.Forexample,weshouldseektoattainhumilitybeforeAllahandservitudetoHim.
• OnHajjweleavebehindsomeofthethingsthatweareaccustomed.ThosewhoarenotperformingHajjshouldtrytodothesameby,forexample,performingdifferenttypesofworship.
• Weshouldtrytostrengthenloveandbrotherhoodbetweenourselves.• Weshouldtrytoassistthepoorandperformthesacrifice(udhiyah/qurbani).• WeshouldtakeadvantageofthefirsttendaysofDhu’l-Hijjahbyfastingasmany
daysaswecanandbystandinginprayerduringitsnights.Weshouldencourageourfamilymemberstodothesame.
• WeshouldtrytoassistandsupportthosegoingonHajjandtheirfamilieswhoareleftbehind.TheProphet�saidthattheonewhoassistssomeonegoingoutforthesakeofAllahhasthesamerewardasthatperson.
• WeshouldprayforthoseperformingHajjandtherebyreceiveaportionoftherewardthattheyarereceiving.
• WeshouldtrytogathertogetherwheneveryoneisgatheredtogetheratArafattopraytoAllahandseektoreceivethemercythatisdescendingthere.We
shouldgathertogetheronthatdayevenifitisnottheDayofArafat(9thDhu’l-Hijjah)whereweare.
WhythefirsttendaysoftheIslamicmonthofDhulHijjaharesospecialandwhatactionswecantaketobenefitfromthesedays?Thespecialworship,hajjisparticulartothesetendays,andRasulullah(PBUH)saidifAllahacceptsthehajjofsomeone,theygobackfromtheirHajjasanewbornbaby.Umrahisalsoperformedinthesedays.Forthosewhodonotgoforhajj,theycanfastforthefirstninedays,givecharity,andtheycandoalotofformsofworship.IbnHajr(radiallahanhu)saidthat“duringthesetendaysyoucandoallthemajorformsofworship,butthisisnotpossibletogatherinanyothersetofdays.”Soourlifeandourstrivingdoesnotstopanywhere,andneitherdoesoreabilitytogetclosertoAllah.SpeakingofhavingnolimittoclosenesswithAllah�,SurahAlamNashrahalludestothestationoftheMessengerofAllah:DidWenotexpandyourbreast?–theMessengerofAllahisabsolutelyRahma(mercy)!Andraisedhighforyouyourrepute.–WheneverAllahismentionedthenameoftheMessengerofAllah(PBUH)ismentionedAndtoyourLorddirect[your]longing!–KeepstrivinginyourconnectionwithAllah�asthereisnolimittocloseness
TheVirtuesoftheTenDaysofDhulHijjahintheQur’anandSunnahQur’anInSurahFajr(1-2),Allahswearsbythetimeoffajrandbythetendays,andforAllahtoswearbysomethingistomakeitgreat.IbnAbbas,ibnZubayr,Mujahidandothers(radiallahanhum)allagreethatthementionofthetendaysisthosefirsttendaysofDhulHijjah.InSurahAl-Hajj(28),Allahsays:“…rememberthenameofAllahintheknowndays…”ibnAbbas(radiallahanhu)mentionsthatthedaysreferredtointhisayaharethetendaysofDhulHijjah.
SunnahInaHadithnarratedbyibnAbbas(radiallahanhu),theMessengerofAllahsaidthat“ThebestdaysthatAllahlovesgooddeedsthemostinarethesedays,meaningthetendaysofDhulHijjah.”(AbuDawud2438)AndinaHadithnarratedbySyedinaJabir(radiallahanhu),theMessengerofAllahsaid:“[of]thetenbestdays,thetenthisthedayofsacrifice(Adha),andtheunevennumbereddayisthedayofArafah,andthesearethetendaysofDhulHijjah.”(ImamAhmad)AndinanotherHadith,SyedinaJabir(Radiallahanhu)narratesthattheMessengerofAllah�saidthatthereare“nodaysbetterthanthetendaysofDhulHijjah.”(ibnHibban3853)IbnAbbas(radiallahanhu)narratesthattheMessengerofAllahsaid:“thebestofdeedstoAllah,thatwhichHelovesandrewardsgreatlyandgenerously,arethoseactionsperformedinthetendaysofDhulHijjah.(SunanalDarimi1774)InaHadith,theSahaba(radiallahanhum)askedtheMessengerofAllahifthemujahidcouldcomparetotheonewhoworshipsinthesetendays,towhichtheMessengerofAllah�respondedthatnoonecancomparetothepersonwhoworshipsinthesetendaysexceptforthemujahidwhogivesawayeverythingheownsandtakeswhatremainswithhimandleavesitallonthebattlefield,includinghislife.Onlythispersoncancomparetotheonewhoworshipsinthesetendays!
BestActionsintheFirstTenDaysofDhulHijjah
• Nawafil:trytodoasmanysupererogatoryprayersasyoucan,asitisamentionedinaHadiththataperson’sstationisraisedandthatbaddeedsareerasedwitheachprostration.
• Fastasmuchasyoucan.Itismentionedinahadith,whenacompanionaskedwhatthebestofdeedswas,theMessengerofAllah�saidtofast.
• QiyamulLayl.Nightprayersshouldbeencouragedinthesetendays.AbdullahibnSalam(radiallahanhu)mentionedthatwhentheMessengerofAllah�cametoMadinahwithallhisradiancehementionedthreethingstothecommunity:spreadpeace,feedpeople,andpraywhileothersareasleep.Normally,aftersuchamigration,peoplewouldbescepticalandcautionsofothers,butinsteadtheMessengerofAllah�summarizedthedeenuponhisarrivalinMadinahalMunawarrah.Thegreattab’eeSaidibnJubayr(radiallahanhu)saidinthefirsttennightsofDhulHijjah,donotturnoffyourlights!
• Tahlil,Tahmeed,Takbeer:TorepeatLailahaillallah,AlhamdulillahandAllahuAkbar–Lailahaillallah–wAllahuAkbarwaLillaahi’l-hamd.AbdullahibnOmarandAbuHurrairah(radiallahanhum)wereknownforrecitingtakbeerinthemarketplace.AbdullahibnOmar(radiallahanhu)wouldkeeprecitinghisdhikr,andwouldonlyreturnsalaminthesetendays.
• DayofArafah:ThedayofArafahshouldbeoccupiedwithduaandtawbah.ThelifeoftheMessengerofAllah�wasdua,torememberAllah�witheveryactionineverymoment.
DuaonDayofArafahofSyedinaAli(RA)InmakingduaonthedayofArafah,SyedinaAli(radiallahanhu)usedtorepeatthefollowingdua:OhAllah!Freemefromthehellfire.YaAllah!Grantmeabundanthalalrizq.YaAllah!Keepawayfrommethedisobedientones,whethertheybejinnorhuman.Practically,onthedayofArafah,youshouldtrytotakeofffromworkifpossible,thatwayyoucanspendyourdayindua.Inaddition,sleepdirectlyafterishathenightbefore,andwakeupanhourbeforefajrinordertobepresentatthetimeAllahlovestoacceptdua.MaketheintentiontomakethisadifferentdayofArafah;makeitadaythatisdifferentfromalltherest.Inclosing,itisimportanttoremindourselvesofthepurposeofourdeen,asisstatedinSurahAnbiya:“WedidnotsendyouotherthantobeaMercytoalltheWorlds,”speakingabouttheMessengerofAllah.Sowecanneverstopstriving,wemustbethatmercy.MayAllahgrantHisMercyandthecompanyofHisMercy,andmayHemakethesetendaysthoseofforgivenessandacceptanceofourduas.
GivingLifetotheNightofEidItisasunnahtogivelifetothenightbeforeEid,meaningspendingwhatevertimeweareableinworshipandremembrancesuchthatthenightcomesalive.TheleastweshoulddoistoprayMaghrib,IshaandFajrincongregation.ThemosquesofTarimfillinthesecondhalfofthenightwithpeoplereadingtheQur’aningroups,prayingandmakingtakbirtogetheratintervals.Attheendofthenighteveryonecomestogetherforakhatamanddua.IthasbeennarratedthattheMessengerofAllah�said:“Therearefivenightsonwhichdu`aisnotrejected:thefirstnightofRajab,thefifteenthnightofSha`ban,Thursdaynight,thenightbeforeEidal-FitrandthenightbeforeEidal-Nahr(al-Adha).”Sayyiduna`Ali,mayAllahbewellpleasedwithhim,usedtospendfournightsinworship:thefirst
nightofRajab,thenightsbeforethetwoEids,andthe15thnightofSha`ban.ItismentionedinthehadiththatifsomeonegiveslifetothenightsbeforethetwoEids,Allahwillgivelifetohisheartonthedaywhenheartsdie.[2]WhatisprimarilymeantissafetyontheDayofJudgmentbuteveninthislifethemajorityofpeople’sheartsaredead,starvedoftheremembranceofAllahandheedlessofthereturntoHim.RememberingAllahonnightssuchasthese,however,whenmostpeoplearebusywithotherthings,willgivelifeandtranquilitytoourhearts.Therearedifferentformsofthetakbir.Hereisoneofthem:

ThereisnodeitysaveHimandweworshipnonebutHimincompletesincerityevenifthedisbelieversdislikeit.
ThereisnodeitysaveHimalone.HefulfilledHispromise,gavevictorytoHisslave,mademightyHisforcesandHealonedestroyedtheConfederates.Allahismost
great,thereisnodeitysaveHim,allpraisebelongstoHim.”ThescholarssaythatwheneveritisrecommendedtorememberAllahitisalsorecommendedtomentionHisMessenger(PBUH.Ifithadnotbeenforhimtherewouldbeno`ArafatorEidortakbir.Forthisreasonweshouldadd,inhonorofourMessenger,hisCompanions,wivesandprogeny:

SunnahsofEidal-AdhaTherootmeaningofthewordEidistoreturnbecauseitreturnsagainandagain,bringingwithitAllah’sgiftsandblessings.AllahcommandedHisMessenger�toshowhisgratitudetoHimfortheimmensegoodthathewasgiven(al-Kawthar)throughprayerandslaughter:SopraytoyourLordandslaughter.[3]ThescholarssaythatthisreferstotheEidPrayerandthesacrifice.WeshoulddowhatweareabletoimplementtheothersunnahsoftheEid.

whoisnotattendingtheprayer• Tocleanone’steethwithasiwakorsimilarobjectasmuchaspossible

• Towearthebestofone’sclothes,whichconsistofthemostbeautiful,cleanestornewestgarments,eveniftheyarenotwhite

WhatisDislikedontheDayofEid?
• Toperformsupererogatory(nafl)prayersbeforetheEidprayerintheEidprayerareaorone’shouse
• Toperformsupererogatory(nafl)prayersaftertheEidprayerintheEidprayerarea,butprayingtheminone’shouseisnotdisliked
• Tofast(thisisprohibitivelydislikedandoneissinfulfordoingit;onemustbreakone’sfast)
WhatistheTakbiral-Tashriq?
AllahMostHighsaysintheQuran,“CelebratethepraisesofGodduringtheAppointedDays…”[Baqara:203]TheQur’anicexegetesexplainthatthephrase‘appointeddays’isreferringtothedaysoftashriq.[Shurunbulali,Imdadal-Fattah]Thetakbiral-tashriqisaninvocationthatissaidonce,outloud,immediatelyafterperformingeachobligatory(fard)prayerstartingfromtheFajrprayeronthedayofArafa(9thofDhulHijjah)uptotheAsrprayerfivedayslater(13thofDhulHijjah).Thisequals23prayers:5onthe9th-12th,whichequal20,and3onthe13th.ThisincludestheFridaycongregationalprayerifitfallswithinthesedays.Thetakbiral-tashriqisnotsaidforthesupererogatory(nafl)prayers,thewitrprayer,orthejanazaprayer.ThereisnoharminsayingitafterbothoftheEidprayers.
