Our team is competing in only its third competition ever. Last year in our second competition, we placed 23rd out of the 120 teams that signed up at Montreal and this year we plan on doing even better. Despite being a team from a small school with a small budget, we have stayed focused, determined and have persevered through every obstacle thrown our way. This year we are using the same frame from last year and modifying most of the remaining sub assemblies. These changes include a new steering system design, stronger control arms, a more reliable drive train, easier engine accessibility, and an overall reduction in weight.

The 2009 SDSM&T #4 car weighs over 10 pounds less than the 2008 car. It features uprights constructed entirely of unobtanium, “a bulletproof drivetrain with shafts and housings made of indestructibillium, and axles made from forged nocanbrakium”. Charging the frame with helium further reduces weight while an integrated undertray (skidplate) and body panels provide over 15 lbs. of static downforce.

San Jose State University is running a whole new vehicle this year. It will be harder, better, faster, and stronger. “Voyager” is a high life sort of vehicle which will stick to the Verdis Quo, and with any luck, won’t Short Circuit. One more time, in 2009, there’s something about us that will put the #30 SJSU vehicle face to face with vehicles from around the world striving for the win in Oregon. It’s been too long since SJSU has been on top, and we’re gonna celebrate, oh yeah, all right, when we succeed. After the competition in Montreal in 2008, it really didn’t make sense, just to leave this unresolved, it’s not hard to go the distance when you finally get involved face to face. The Aerodynamic, 2009 SJSU Baja is first designed with this unique, technologic process: write it, cut it, paste it, save it, load it, check it, quick - rewrite it. Our vehicle is then built and tested with the following “5555” technique: Buy it, use it, break it, fix it, trash it, change it, mail - upgrade it. This vehicle is dedicated to our Superheroes; a steady diet of Club Soda and Daft Punk music DJ’ed by Zahid “Robot Rock” Aziz. Potato Wave!

For 2009 the SDSM&T #6 car features a perpetual motion machine integrated into the drivetrain and suspension. How does the perpetual motion machine work, you ask? How is a rainbow made? How does the sun set? How does a posi-trac rear end in a Plymouth work? It just does. Also new this year are tires using the vintage P.F. Flyer tread pattern. They are guaranteed to make every Baja car run faster and jump higher. We outrun The Beast.

As only a third year team, Cougar Baja had made a statement about the program it is building at SIUe. The inaugural season in 2007 was capped off with a very respectable finish at Rochester, New York beating 52 teams. As this was our first year competing, we came back with loads of information of how to improve our vehicle. We implemented those changes at Tennessee Tech in 2008 and obtained a 1st place finish in the sled pull event and an astounding 15th overall. For a second year team we definitely turned some heads. We are looking to improve upon last year’s finish with some design changes to the cockpit, lowering the center of gravity and some slight suspension changes as well. With the dedication of the team members and with monetary support from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, Hunter Engineering, Leggett and Platt Inc., and Williams Patent Crusher & Pulverizer Company Inc., we are determined to make a statement about the up and coming program we are establishing here at SIUe. Thanks to all who supported us and making us who we are today.

The 2009 car represents a forward evolution in engineering design and craftsmanship. Marketed as a radically different race car, 2009 is barely traceable to its predecessors. The overall theme remains the same: preservation of speed, power, and agility, but the application in each subsystem is new and different. Greater attention to detail and a new emphasis on function over form have resulted in a bare bones, purpose built race car that is lightweight, fast, and highly maneuverable.

Our program builds on over 30 years of experience, with numerous victories and consistent top ten finishes. We owe that to the knowledge and experience of teams who came before us. We have moved in a different direction, but we have ultimately stayed focused on The Righteous Path.

The 2008 vehicle, nicknamed Tsunami, performed well in last year’s events, securing a top ten finish at the Montreal race. The 08 is a rear swingarm platform, the bread and butter of TTU for many years prior. Design features include a structurally optimized rear swingarm, independent front suspension, and a three-piece drive axle. The vehicle proved to be very robust, running the last two events without structural or mechanical failure.

One focus area for the 2008 vehicle was aesthetics and craftsmanship. Featuring a TIG welded frame, clean appearance, and a custom flame job, Tsunami represents some of the best craftsmanship our shop has to offer. For the first time ever, our school colors were chosen for the paint scheme.

Improvements for 2009 include a new CVT, revised rear brake system, and lower CG. A few other tricks up our sleeve should make Tsunami very competitive at Alabama.

Our college, Texas A&M University - Kingsville, will be competing for the first time as a university in the 2009 event in Alabama. We hope to set the bar high at this event for future teams from our school. Being that this is the first time our school has competed in the Baja competition, we did not have a vehicle to improve on. Our team is composed of five mechanical engineering students who have, over the course of the past few months, designed and built our 2009 vehicle from nothing. That being said, we have high hopes for the 2009 season. We would like to send a special thanks to our sponsors, SAE International, Briggs & Stratton, Dorsal Services, 4-Wheel Specialties, Wright Materials, and C/M Graphics, for the financial and technical help that they have provided us. Thank you for your time and support and wish us luck for this season and the future seasons that our school will be competing.

The 2009 Blazer Motorsports Baja has built on the knowledge gained over the past 4 years. We have several returning members this year. This allows us to really improve the design of the Baja. We have made major changes in our drivetrain and suspension for this year. Since we spent last year learning to use the CNC machines and software, we could incorporate more machined parts this year. This gave us a lot more design freedom. In conclusion, we anticipate that the lessons learned from previous years will carry us far in this competition.

The Union College Baja SAE team is made up of mostly engineering students, but because of the nature of the college, many students of other majors and interests have had the chance to try out Baja SAE. In addition to the variety of majors found within the Baja team, the size of Union means that even first year team members are given real responsibilities within the team and always have a project to be working on. The casual but goal oriented team dynamic makes getting hands-on engineering experience fun and effective.

Team Baja at the University of Houston is a senior design team who has chosen to design, fabricate, and build an SAE Baja vehicle. The team is working together to complete the project before graduation as well as compete in the May 2009 Baja competition. The team will be the University of Houston’s first team to compete in the SAE Baja competition. The team consists of three seniors, all majoring in Mechanical Engineering Technology.

In designing the vehicle, the team reseached many possibilities that would keep the vehicle within the SAE rules and regulations, but would still allow them to compete for a top 10% placement. The frame was designed using 4130 chromoly steel to handle the rough terrain as well as complete the enduarnce race without frame failure. Some of the other design aspects considered while designing the frame were suspension components, steering system, engine mounting and driver’s safety.

We are currently still seeking sponsorship but would like to send a special thanks to Jesse James and Sani-Welds for their support.

The UIC Baja team is a small tight-knit group of mechanical engineers from the University of Illinois at Chicago. This year our vehicle has been completely redesigned from the ground up. With dynamic events that specialize in traction and maneuverability at this year’s competition we set forth to design a lighter car, with a shortened wheel base and a four speed auto clutching gearbox, making it more than capable of conquering any obstacle thrown its way. With a good design and a strong team, we plan to build upon our success of the past and finish in the winner’s circle. We would like to thank all of our sponsors for their generous support.

The University of Illinois is going into its 13th year as a Baja team. Over the course of its existence it has gone through several complete car redesigns and ideas, along with being transferred from an Agricultural Engineering to Mechanical Engineering project. After a very successful but aging design, the team decided to significantly alter their car last year. This year the team will be fielding an improved design of its solid axle four link suspension and its first transmission. The team has been growing strong and is having one of its best years so far. They look forward to two very good competitions. At the very least they will hopefully have the coolest pit cart.

This year we have ambitiously chosen to design an independent rear suspension for the first time in the last ten years of Baja at UMBC. This new design has challenged a long-standing tradition of building the most cost effective vehicle by increasing complexity over the swing arm designs of the past. We still consider the car to be competitive in cost as well as in the dynamic events. The new suspension design should improve our performance in previously weak dynamic events. UMBC has always been strong in building cars which last. Anyone can build an expensive, fast car, but the real challenge is building a competitive inexpensive car. Our design has focused on producing a durable and simple vehicle. We feel as though producing a quality vehicle means that both of these characteristics need to be addressed. By making the vehicle as simple as possible, if our team runs into problems during testing or competition, it should be easy to diagnose and fix the problem.

Our team consists of around 30 undergraduate students, one graduate student, and one faculty advisor. One thing our team is very excited about is that over half of the members of our team are sophomore level or younger. This should provide a great foundation for our team for years to come. The younger team members are very excited about the opportunity to get some hands-on experience in building machines, and the older members of our team are happy to share their expertise with the new members.

This is the first time we have gone to a competition in over two years. We are very excited to get back to competing and showing off the skills of the students in our program. Attending competitions provides the members of our team a much needed bonus for all of their hard work throughout the year.

This is Pilot Racing’s newest creation for the 2009 competition. The overall design of the 2009 vehicle was based upon improving teams performance in all areas of competition while cutting weight, reducing vehicle cost, and simplifying design for manufacturing. Distinctive design traits of this year’s vehicle include a locked rear end mated to a tuned CVT via a chain drive, rack and pinion steering and turning brake for improved maneuverability, tuned Fox air shocks, and a TIG welded 4130 chassis. The team went with a suspension design unique from what Pilots Racing has built in the past. The front exhibits short-long arm suspension with 8.5 inches of travel, while the rear is a multi-link trailing arm design with 10 inches of travel. The vehicle has an overall ground clearance of 11.5 inches and weighs approximately 425 lbs. With this new suspension and improved maneuverability the car is capable of handling any obstacle thrown its way.

As Virginia Baja Racing enters its fifth year of competition, it benefits for the first time from truly iterative design. Instead of designing from scratch, the 2009 car is an improvement on the 2008 car. The car retains a double A-arm setup front and rear, a CVT transmission, and similar spaceframe design and concept. However, improvements have been made in all areas. 2009 sees a return to conventional shocks, increased suspension travel, a limited slip differential, and use of lighter and more effective bracing. An accelerated build schedule with increased testing time should yield a better resolved and more race-ready car than ever before.

Overall, this year’s car is faster, lighter, more enduring, and better engineered than any car Virginia Baja Racing has ever produced. And the advanced production schedule means our drivers have more training in the car than any other group in team history. With the largest team (38 members) that the Univ. of Virginia has seen to date, Virginia Baja Racing is continuing its upward push into the most competitive groups on the course. Go Hoos!

The University of Wisconsin Platteville has been involved in the Baja SAE Challenge since 1984. Their Baja team has been, and will continue to be, a team that prides themselves on ambitious design and implementation of new ideas. One example of innovation the team is especially proud of is their usage of a prototype Milner Continuously Variable Transmission provided by Orbital Traction during the 2008 Midwest competition. They were able to successfully run the transmission and prove the initial design to be worthy in an off-road vehicle application. The team hopes to use the transmission again in 2010 after the re-design that is currently taking place. This year should prove to be another successful year full of vehicle improvements and team development. Their 2009 car mainly focuses on improved drive train efficiency, a 30% decrease in vehicle weight compared to the previous year, and a refined suspension and chassis design. To increase drive train efficiency, they are implementing a planetary gear reduction after their CVT. Engineering new, reliable, and efficient vehicle components to implement in their Baja cars gets them excited for competition every year!

The University of Wisconsin - Stout has been competing in the Baja event since 1997. The Baja Devils have always been one of the groups that teams look at for new and innovative ideas. Our team members have put in the time and energy that is necessary to compete in the SAE Baja with great success. The Baja Devils have a strong tradition of building a car that is not only capable in the endurance race, but also can be put up against the worst of conditions and come out unscathed.

Building on our past experiences, we construct a car that combines what we have learned from the past with many new ideas to improve the design and capability of the newest car. Every member’s opinion is involved to make the car the best it can be.

The Baja Devils hope to end in the Top 20 overall in Burlington, Wisconsin this year.

Cowboy Motorsports (CMS) is a team of eight seniors in Mechanical Engineering representing the University of Wyoming (UW). The 2009 Baja Series is the first SAE Competition attended by University of Wyoming students since 1992. Cowboy Motorsports has designed and constructed the entire Baja car from scratch without parts, components, or prototypes from previous years of competition with a cash budget of $5000. The 2008-2009 CMS sponsors are as follows: UW Mechanical Engineering Department, Firehole Technologies, Stutzman Inc., Kellogg Garden Products, the Wold Foundation, and Silver Creek Engineering Inc.

The 2009 CMS Baja car has been designed and constructed with the following off-road vehicle features: A Comet® CVT in conjunction with a fixed chain and sprocket speed reduction, four independently articulating wheels ( J/A arms in the front, trailing arms in the rear), and a TIG welded 4130 alloy steel tubing frame. Design of the Baja car has been facilitated by frequent submission of progress reports as well as design reviews conducted in the presence of mechanical engineering faculty and advisors.

We are students of the Mechanic and Electronic Engineering careers from the Universidad Autónoma del Estado de México, who are full of enthusiasm and passion for engineering.

The members belong to all different semesters from 1st to 10th, women and men, all joined for one single goal; to design, build and race a Baja SAE vehicle, made with our own hands.

The vehicle was designed using mathematical and computer-aided modelling and simulation, resulting in a safe, high-performance vehicle for off-road competition, with a really light weight, good strength, and high speed.

The frame was designed using round tube, from two different materials, low carbon steel (1020) and cromoly steel (4130) of varying diameters and wall thicknesses, and analyzed using finite element analysis to minimize weight, and at the same time, give to the vehicle the maximum stiffness.

Indios Racing Team does not have a long experience with Baja SAE events. Last year our team took part for the first time in Montreal. Based on the experience earned in the previous competition, we redesigned the front suspension and brakes system to obtain better performance. Also, we had to make decisions to increase the efficiency of our car such as weight reduction.

We had learned that good technical work is not enough, we must be smart to get good sponsorships.

Our purpose is to show that by working as a team, we can achieve a good project for 2009.
