Super 88 Vinyl Electrical Tape
Data SheetProduct Description:Scotch Super 88 Vinyl ElectricalTape is a premium grade, 8.5 milthick, all–weather vinyl insulatingtape. It is designed to performcontinuously in ambienttemperatures up to 105°C (220°F).The tape is conformable for coldweather application down to –18°C(0°F). It has excellent resistance toabrasion, moisture, alkalies, acids, corrosion and varying weatherconditions (including ultravioletexposure). The combination of elasticbacking and aggressive adhesiveprovides moisture–tight electricaland mechanical protection withminimum bulk. Super 88 is anUnderwriters’ Laboratories Listedand Canadian Standards AssociationCertified “Insulating Tape”.

Specification:Product:The tape is based on polyvinyl chloride(PVC) and/or its copolymers and has arubber–based, pressure–sensitiveadhesive. The tape shall be 8.5 milsthick, and be UL Listed and markedper UL Standard 510 as “FlameRetardant, Cold and WeatherResistant.” The tape must beapplicable at temperatures rangingfrom 0°F through 100°F (–18°Cthrough 38°C) without loss of physicalproperties. The tape shall be classifiedfor use in both indoor and outdoorenvironments. The tape shall becompatible with synthetic cableinsulations, jackets and splicingcompounds. The tape will remainstable and will not telescope morethan 0.1 inches when maintained attemperatures below 120°F (50°C).
Engineering/Architectural Specification:Primary electrical insulation (branchwiring in wet or dry locations): Allsplices for 600 volt wire rated 105°C(220°F) and below shall be insulatedwith a minimum of two half–lappedlayers of Scotch Super 88 VinylElectrical Tape. All connectorshaving irregular surfaces shall bepadded with Scotchfil ElectricalInsulation Putty or 3M 130C RubberSplicing Tape prior to insulatingwith Scotch Super 88 VinylElectrical Tape.
Mechanical protection (outerjacketing):All rubber and thermoplasticinsulating high voltage power cabletape splices and repairs shall beoverwrapped with at least two half–lapped layers of 3M Super 88 vinylelectrical tape.
Installation Techniques:The tape shall be applied in half–lappedlayers with sufficient tension to produce auniform wind (for most applications thistension will reduce the tape’s width toapproximately 5/8 of its original width). Onpigtail splices, the tape shall be wrappedbeyond the end of the wires and then foldedback, leaving a protective cushion to resistcut–through. Wrap tape up–hill, taping froma smaller diameter surface to a largerdiameter surface. Apply the tape with notension on the last wrap to prevent flagging.
Shelf Life:Scotch Super 88 Vinyl Electrical Tape has a5-year shelf life (from date of manufacture)when stored under the followingrecommended storage conditions. Storebehind present stock in a clean dry place at atemperature or 70°F and 40-50% relativehumidity.
