Around BTPS…………………..7-10
The month of February is typically a very busy learning month for the
incredible team that supports students in BTPS
schools. As a part of our commitment to increasing
the capacity of our staff, BTPS hosted the first
collaborative learning day for support staff. The day
was filled with targeted professional learning that
focused on supporting staff in their respective roles.
Sessions were offered on supporting students with
diverse learning needs, PowerSchool and finance
sharing sessions, as well as a special session to help
best utilize the Learning Commons facilities in our schools. I had the pleasure
of spending a bit of time in the
sessions and the really impressive
fact is that most of the expertise
is local! We are so fortunate to
have such talented people living
within the boundaries of BTPS.
On this day our teaching staff also
spent time continuing in their
Teacher Effectiveness Support Teams. The day was very productive and
helped us to continue the work of these grade and subject level collaborative
teams! This week, members of the BTPS Leadership team will be attending
their annual Leadership Workshop. We are once again very happy to be
working with Tom Hierck. Many of our schools have worked directly with him
and his expertise has dramatically influenced our work as a team. We look
forward to his guidance and working together collaboratively to support
students in BTPS. Finally, the work at the school level will continue on
February 24th as our school based learning teams focus on their school
professional
learning plans.
As always, our
focus as a team
is maximizing
learning for our
students!

TECHNOLOGY
Data Security: Our shared responsibility
We had another attack last week that was quite different from the others. It appears someone tried to change all of the files of one of our school servers but was unsuccessful in completing its task. The users however couldn’t access the files so we had to restore them all from backup. This is the fourth time in the last three months that this type of action has had to be taken. All of these phishing attempts are getting into our network through users clicking on links of infected email that is not legitimate. We need to make sure we are hyper vigilant in clicking on links in a email.
Below are two examples of a ligitamate email from itunes and a fake one that is a phishing attempt. Notice how the symbol fonts etc are all identical!
To the right you will see an example of a fake email attempting to get info or install malware in to the network or machine

The Leadership Workshop at the end of this week will mean that we will be unable
to publish a Superintendent’s Memo for the week of February 20th. February 22nd is
PINKSHIRTDAY. This is a day when we focus our attention on an issue that we need to
be aware of every day. Bullying is a behavior that we can do without! By working
together to stop bullying we can achieve this. As a part of their commitment to stop
bullying, Shaw is encouraging Canadians to make a pink shirt
promise. Using the power of social media, Shaw has committed to
donating $1.00 to bullying prevention programs for every positive social media message using
the hashtag #PinkShirtPromise. This is a great opportunity to share a positive message and help
raise funds to support programs focused on creating a safer, caring and respectful world!
February 20th is Family Day! On behalf of the BTPS Board of Trustees, we would like to wish everyone a great
Family Day and our wish for you is that you will be able to spend time with family!
Take care,

TEACHER RESOURCES
CBC Legends Project
The Legends Project is a compilation of traditional oral
stories, legends and histories of Canada’s Inuit and
First Nations, gathered in communities across the
country from coast to coast to coast. They are tran-
scribed, lightly dramatized, cast within the communities,
and recorded in English and the native language. The
goals of the project have evolved into meeting the in-
creasing urgency to help First Nations’ communities
protect and promote their endangered languages, as
well as lend pride to their rich cultural history.
These colourful tales depict a time when animals and
humans spoke the same language, when a farting
wolverine or a fanciful fish had as much to teach as a
legendary hero. From creation stories to life lessons,
these ancient legends and myths of our First Nations
are part of the foundation of this country.
Check out the legends project here. You can listen to
the audio files on-line, or order copies of the CDs from
CBC. Incorporating authentic voices in your class-
rooms is an important way to teach cultural understand-
ing.

On Thursday evening, Clandonald gym was beautifully lit up and filled with many community
members, students from all over the rural area and staff to enjoy the best Dime Time yet! Children
ran with pure joy from one activity to another to win prizes, enjoy a snow cone, have some fresh made
popcorn or beat a friend in the very popular cake walk. We were proud to have past students join
our family once again to work at the stations. A big thank you to JR Robson for their contributions
and Mrs. Jackson for her energy, time and dedication she gives to our school time and time again to
make such an event so amazing!
