SFC

Specific Fuel Consumption at 75%MCR (M/E), at 50%MCR (A/E) specified in NOx technical file • In cases where the installed engines don’t have NOx technical file, approximated default values including margin, SFCapp(i.e. M/E: 190g/kW・h, A/E: 215g/kW・h), are available. • In cases where the NOx regulation doesn’t apply to the propulsion system (e.g. steam turbine), SFC specified by the manufacturer or confirmed by the verifier is available.

EnginePower (PME)

75% of the rated installed power (MCR) (In cases where the propulsion system is diesel electric or steam turbine, PME is 83% of MPP or MCR.)• In cases where EPL is installed, PME is 83% of the limited installed power (MCRlim).

Speed(Vref)

Ship speed at PME and under the maximum summer load draught (for container ships, under 70%DWT draught.) • In cases where both of tank test results and speed trial results are not available, an approximated ship speed including margin, Vref,app is to be calculated by the simple formula. The parameters of this formula are ship type, DWT, and MCR.

The formula of EEXI is the same as EEDI, but some parameters’ definitions are different.

*1 The approved speed-power curve is available without any corrections.*2 The tank test results can be corrected/calibrated by numerical calculation such as CFD, etc.*3 In case of using numerical calculations, estimation process and methodology of the power curves are to be submitted. (It should include documentation on consistency with the defined quality standards and the verification of the numerical setup with parent hull or the reference set of comparable ships.)*4 The sea conditions and ship speed should have been measured in accordance with ISO 15016:2002 or the equivalent and the measured ship speed was calibrated, if necessary, by taking into account the effects of wind, tide, waves, etc. If the speed trial was carried out under design draught, the ship speed shall be calibrated under EEDI draught by using Admiralty Coefficient, etc.*5 Vref,app is an approximated ship speed obtained by a certain correction applies to the average ship speed of each ship type and size (including margin).

Fully support the EEXI verification for all vessels built in Japan, regardless of their classification or shipbuilder. Especially for the vessels built by JMU, we get easy access to the technical information, which put us in a competitive position.

Improvement of EEXI with SURF-BULB is calculated using our past model test results and achievements of SURF-BULB, which can be done more quickly and economically than doing complete model test or CFD.

Propose the best solution for regulatory compliance according to the characteristics of the individual ship based on the EEXI assessment results. Our proposal may include;

Engine Power Limitation (EPL), Installation of Energy Saving Device (ESD),DWT increase (draft up) and/or Optimization of bulbous bow, propeller and/or engine, etc.

Further, provide optimal solutions to improve the fuel efficiency rating system CII, which was adopted at the same time as EEXI.

Principal requirements of EPL

Principal requirements• The available power is to be limited by locking fuel index.• EPL cannot be released without permission from the ship master or the officer in charge of navigational watch (OICNW).• If EPL is un-limited due to the purpose of securing the safety of a ship or saving life at sea, the reason and relevant information are to be recorded in Onboard Management Manual (OMM).• EPL system (or each sub system) should be tamper-proof.• EPL system should be accompanied by OMM for EPL that should be on board the ship for inspection.

Example of improvement of EEXI by EPL EPL is a highly effective measure and a cost-effective solution to improve the ship’s attained EEXI. Thus, EPL is the most effective measure for EEXI improvement. EEXI calculation of a Handymax BC based on the model tank test result is shown below. EEXI was improved 11% by setting MCRlim = 74% MCR, and the required EEXI value was cleared.

Example of improvement of EEXI by Energy Saving Device(SURF-BULB(*))SURF-BULB (SB) can improve the ship speed by 1% through 3% as well as improving EEXI, and additionally it improves FOC by 3% through 7% on seagoing. EEXI calculation of a Handymax BC based on the model tank test result is shown below. MCRLim & ship speed are improved 1% and 0.12kts respectively.

3.Cases study of improvement of EEXI by EPL and Energy Saving Device

Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) is adopted at the same time with EEXI. CII result and “A” –“E” rating will be added on SOC of IMODCS. Low rated vessels (“E” or “D” on 3 consecutive years) should develop a plan of corrective actions and the plan should be approved by the Administration or RO. SURF-BULB can reduce required engine power about

3-7% on seagoing. So, it can not only improve EEXI value, but also contribute to CII.

What is SURF-BULB (SB)?SURF-BULB is a groundbreaking energy-saving device developed and patented by Japan Marine United Corporation. This device is configured from asymmetrical retreating-type fins with a valve and is attached to the front edge of the rudder, which is an extension of the propeller shaft center line to improve a ship’s propulsion efficiency. SURF-BULB applies a reliable hydrodynamic principle therefore boasts a simple shape and structure. As such, we can assure minimal initial costs and reliable energy-saving results. This device can be easily installed on both new and existing ships, therefore we recommend it with confidence to our customers with ships in operation looking for ways to cut energy consumption.

SURF-BULB PrincipleIt is known that, by positioning a rudder behind a rotating propeller, the effect of rotational flow of the propeller’s slipstream improves hull efficiency and increases a ship’s propulsion efficiency. SURF-BULB was conceived with a focus on this phenomenon. In other words, significant improvement of propulsion efficiency is obtained by reducing rudder resistance and increasing hull efficiency by attaching energy-saving device SURF-BULB, which is configured from asymmetrical retreating-type fins and a valve, to the front edge of the rudder, which is an extension of the propeller shaft center line. The energy-saving benefit can be verified with good accuracy in a mock-up tank test prior to installation.

SURF-BULB Features① Horsepower reduced by between 3% and 7% when traveling

at the same speed with SURF-BULB.② Can be applied not only for newly building vessels, but also

for existing vessels. Installed on more than 800 vessels.③ The same maneuvering performance, as there is no

difference in rudder characteristics with/without SURF-BULB.④ Good investment return in a short period of time at low cost.⑤ Less vibrations above the propeller.
