SUPPORTING THE PRS TO
REDUCE INEQUALITIES

Volunteers needed . . .
Zahra is a 25 year old woman who has recently
been given refugee status in the UK. She is single,
has no dependents or pets and is currently
volunteering with a local community organisation,
but is keen to find a full time job.
Now that she has leave to remain, Zahra is looking
for somewhere to live in Cardiff. She knows the
area quite well, and speaks fluent English, but this
is her first experience of the private rented sector.

Fatima is a 37 year old woman who is married to
Umar. They have three children below the age of
10. Fatima is not currently working, as she is the
primary care-provider for the children. Umar works
part time as a cleaner, and his hours have recently
been reduced. The family are in receipt of benefits.
They currently live in a privately rented three
bedroom house, but are struggling to keep up with
their rental payments. Two of the children attend a
local school, so they do not want to move out of the
area.

Angus is a 74 year old man who is retired. He has
severe arthritis, and his condition has recently
worsened. Angus wants to end his current tenancy
and move closer to his family, who provide his care,
especially after losing his wife last year.
He is on a fixed 12 month tenancy, which does not
expire until December, but he is finding it harder
and harder to manage in his current home. He is
looking for a ground floor property, with adaptations
including a handrail and a wet room.

CHANCE CARD
You find a property that you like online, and
request a viewing with a local letting agent.
You tell them your name and that you have
moved to the UK in the last year.
The letting agent has heard about ‘right to rent
checks’ on the news, and becomes concerned
about what to do. Three other people have
also requested to view the property.
CHANCE CARD
Your landlord comes round to discuss the rent
arrears situation. You explain that Umar has
recently had his hours reduced and is looking
for another job, and request some time to
catch up with payments.
The landlord agrees, but as he is leaving,
makes a racist remark, which greatly upsets
you.

CHANCE CARD
You write to your landlord and ask if there is
any way that the tenancy can be ended earlier,
explaining the situation around your health and
care needs. The landlord responds with a
telephone call, is very rude, and says that he
will not allow you to leave before the end of the
tenancy. After this, the landlord starts to call
and text you incessantly around the date when
the rent is due. This makes you feel stressed
and intimidated.
Thank you!
