Background
Today’s farming production systems are more intensive and
much more is expected from farm animals. The modern
sow is a totally different animal to that of 25-30 years
ago. Genetic improvements have led to highly prolific
sows with the ability to produce greater numbers of
piglets each cycle. Every aspect of a sow’s management
must be correct in order to obtain the maximum number
of piglets. These piglets need to be healthy, viable and
have good birth weights in order to achieve maximum
profitability. Farmers must manage the bacterial challenge
from the environment to safeguard their profits.
Common threats to a farm’s profitability are E. coli and
other pathogens. Genex Sow protects against these
harmful bacteria which are often consumed via the feed.
Genex Sow uses a unique blend of organic acids, essential oils and plants extracts, which means that the effect of Genex Sow is not via a simple pH reduction effect.
Organic acids are used to control potentially pathogenic bacteria. Genex Sow is formulated using a unique blend of organic acids combined with a stable carrier. It’s the types of acids used in Genex Sow that make the difference.
By combining all of these components, Genex Sow provides excellent protection against feed borne pathogens.
This unique blend of active ingredients used in Genex Sow is born of intensive R&D. It is not just the ingredients themselves that gives the product its unique properties. It is the ratio of those ingredients and balance between them which combine to achieve the optimal synergistic effect. By examining the potential of each material and considering how it may enhance the efficacy of the other components, the researchers at Optivite designed the ultimate formulation that makes Genex Sow so effective.

GENEX SOW do?What does
Organic acids – Their effect on lactobacilli bacteria
A similar process also takes place in lactic acid producing bacteria – lactobacilli. However, our acids target the harmful bacteria not the beneficial bacteria that contribute to a healthy gut.
GENEX SOW:
HOW DOES GENEX SOW WORK?
The ScienceThe pathogenic challengeBacteria such as E. coli are a major threat to sows and their piglets. There are many possible sources of infection of which feed can be a main route.
Intestinal wall microvilli, microscopic cellular membrane protrusions that are responsible for a wide variety of functions including absorption of nutrients, can be seriously damaged by E. coli and other pathogens. This can lead to the malabsorption of nutrients reducing the efficiency of digestion and inhibiting animal performance.
Organic acidsThe effect of Genex Sow is not a simple pH reduction by the acids. Genex Sow is formulated using a unique blend of organic acids combined with a stable carrier that make a difference.
Why use organic acids?Organic acids are used to control potentially pathogenic bacteria because of their ability to penetrate the bacterial cell wall of Gram-negative bacteria. Once the cell has been compromised the organic acids catastrophically disrupt cell metabolism, thus killing the bacteria.
Genex Sow vs. E. coli in finished feed
Organic acids – their effect on Gram-negative enterobacteria e.g. E. coli:
Organic acids (AH) consist of two components, negatively charged anions (A-) and positively charged hydrogen ions or cations (H+).
=Hydrogen/Cations (Positivelycharged)
= Anions (Negatively charged)
KEY:
STEP 1 – The acid penetrates the cell wall
AH move into the cell & split up acidifying the internal cell environment. In order to maintain the neutrality of the internal environment, the cell moves to step 2.
STEP 1 – The acid penetrates the cell wall
Lactobacilliareacidtolerant, soareableto cope with a greater pH shift.
STEP 2 – Removal of cations
The cell uses energy to power the proton pumps which move H+ out of the cell.
STEP 2 – Removal of cations
LessenergyusedinmovingH+outofthecell.
STEP 3–Celldies
As the cell is using all of its available energy moving H+ out of the cell normal cell function is impaired.Inhibition of DNA replacement occurs leading to cell death.
STEP 3–Cellsurvives
The energy expended is low meaning more energy is available for normal cell function and viability.

Cells damaged after treatment with essential oil
The essential oils in Genex• Stimulate feed intake
• Damage microorganism cell wall structure - Cell contents lost - Disrupts cell homeostasis/genetic material replication - Allows more organic acid into cell
• Prevent flagella formation - Limits movement - Limits growth & multiplication
The plant extracts in Genex• Natural surfactants
- Coats bacteria - Damages bacterial cell wall - Cell contents lost - Allows more organic acid into cell - Enhances essential oil effect
By combining all of these components, Genex Sow provides excellent protection against pathogens, including E. coli.
