Background and methodology

§ This summary presents the findings from the 2013 Sutton Residents’ Survey for the Sutton Local Local Committee Area. The survey was conducted by independent researchers Ipsos MORI on behalf of Sutton Council.

§ The purpose of the survey is to provide robust measures of residents’ perceptions of where they live, Council services, communication with the Council and community engagement.

§ The survey was carried out with a representative sample of 1,031 residents across the Borough aged 16+, between 11 October and 17

Version 1 | Internal Use Only© Ipsos MORI

residents across the Borough aged 16+, between 11 October and 17 November 2013.

§ The results for Sutton Local are based on 184 interviews with residents living in the LCA. This relatively low base size means results presented in this report should be treated with a degree of caution.

§ A detailed breakdown of results for all questions, including demographic and attitudinal crossbreaks, is provided via the main report, full data tables and topline documents (available separately).

Conclusions and looking ahead

§ Against a difficult economic backdrop and unprecedented cuts, results show Sutton remains a resilient Borough and continues to perform well. Generally speaking, the Sutton Local LCA is performing in line with the wider Borough on most key measures.

§ The vast majority (89%) of Sutton Local residents are satisfied with their local area as a place to live. One in five residents in Sutton Local believe that the local area is improving – significantly higher than for the Borough overall (where it is 12%).

§ The results point to some specific local issues which the Council should look to address, including road and pavement repairs, clean streets and activities for teenagers. Dog fouling also appears to be an environmental issue of concern.

§ Parking appears to be a significant problem in the LCA. Half of residents cite is as an environmental issue locally, whilst two in five express active dissatisfaction with the Council’s parking service (higher than elsewhere in the Borough). It could be that Sutton Local’s central location is a factor

Version 1 | Internal Use Only© Ipsos MORI

(higher than elsewhere in the Borough). It could be that Sutton Local’s central location is a factor here, but are residents aware that parking in Sutton is the cheapest in London, and could this help to change attitudes?

§ On key corporate measures Sutton LCA performs in line with the Borough average: satisfaction levels with the Council remain high (73% satisfied). However, less than half of residents feel informed about the Council’s services and benefits, and only a minority (45%) agree that they can influence Council-run services. Improving these figures will be a challenge for the rest of the Borough as well as Sutton Local.

§ Comparatively fewer residents in Sutton Local say they are fit or very fit, with most regarding their present fitness levels as average. This seems slightly at odds with the findings for the amount of exercise residents say they do, which is in line with the Borough average. What else could be driving lower levels of self-reported fitness?
