Thank you all for a wonderful, exhilarating, spirit filled time here as your interim minister. As I

look back over the last twenty-two months, I see the faces of so many of you as we examined our

faith, encouraged one another to move forward, and to be the church of Jesus Christ. You are a

healthy body of believers with so many gifts which you willingly shared with others. I looked

forward each day to coming to work at the Old South Church. Each day brought forth new

adventures and challenges, but always there were resources available to make the journey light.

Jesus says to us, “Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and

you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” (Matthew 11:29-30)

And that was my experience here in almost all of the work that needed to be done. The yoke

was easy because I partnered with great folks. The burden was almost always light because it

was a shared burden. I believe that the future will be bright and the work will be easy because

you have exhibited a willingness to share that work.

When a minister leaves a church, he or she finds that separation difficult because a minister

becomes intimately involved in people’s lives. We can’t help but love each of you and then we

leave. It breaks our hearts to leave because we must remove ourselves from your presence and

we can’t look back. It is our responsibility to maintain boundaries. We can’t continue our deep

felt friendships because that would be unfair to the new settled pastor. So we have all these

places in our hearts where we have placed you and now we cannot keep up a contact, no phone

calls, no visits, no texting. Seems harsh but that is one of the promises we ministers make to the

church and to its newly hired minister.

Because I live in the neighborhood, I will run into some of you at the gas station, the grocery store,

the hospital and other places. I will say hi, but will not engage in lengthy conversation about the

church and its new minister. So, because of this, I am sure I will be sad to leave.

But you must know that I have cherished the love I have received from the youngest to the oldest

members, from the boards and the committees of the church, from the choir and the readers, from

the colonial crafters and from so many individuals who came to make a difference. I was blessed

from the beginning with an eager and helpful staff that was always willing to go the extra mile.

Each of them made the burden lighter and the yoke easier. I would be remiss in not drawing

special attention to Patty Gerboc, who made calls for me, set up appointments for me and was a

great ministerial partner. Thanks Patty.

I will hold these memories in my heart forever. I have learned so much from you. You have been

great teachers. You have ministered to my soul and my soul rejoices because of you. Each church

is unique and has special gifts and Old South Church might have more gifts than most churches.

Try to share those gifts with everyone, learn to be more forgiving and more compassionate with

each other and the world at large.

It is with great appreciation for our shared experiences that I say thank you from the bottom of my

heart for all that you have done and meant to me. Forgive me for my errors along the way as I

forgive you.

In great love I bid you fair well. May Christ be with you in all your journeys.

Wow!! Another year of Sunday

school has come to a close and

what a great year it was. Thank you to all the people who volunteered with Sunday school, nursery,

preschool, and the 1-5th grade classes. You are all a blessing to this church. Please consider signing up

in the fall. THANK YOU!

Summer worship has begun in the Dell. Every Sunday the kids will begin in worship and after a

children’s moment go to Sunday school. Due to everyone’s busy schedules in the summer we keep pre-

school-8th grade together in the same classroom. Nursery care is still available.

On Saturday, June 8, the Anchor Lamp room was transformed into a coffeehouse. There was live

music, delicious homemade desserts and whole lot of people. Our Peace Camp Coffeehouse Fundraiser

was a huge success and I couldn’t of done it without the CE ministry, the Colonial Crafters, Women’s

Fellowship, the children and youth, and all the people who either donated their musical talents, deli-

cious desserts or time helping serve or clean up afterwards. We raised about $1,000 for this year’s Peace

Camp and I could not be more grateful and touched by the never ending support of this church to-

wards our children and youth and community outreach.

Thank you Old South Church for giving us the chance to run another great Peace Camp this year!

This is the day that the Lord has made; we will rejoice and be glad in it. - Psalm 118:24

Yes, summer has finally arrived and with it our beautiful worship services in the Dell! We can rejoice

and be glad that our church is once again able to meet and worship outside. What a wonderful vision

so many years ago to build the Dell, but it takes many hands and people willing to help each week to

make it possible. Please see Bill Knox to volunteer an hour on a Sunday this summer for Dell set up

and clean up. Without your help, Dell worship will not be possible.

Please also consider sharing your special musical talents this summer and sign up for a Sunday in the

Dell. Young or old, don’t be shy, come and share. See John Bodmer to choose a Sunday. We can’t wait

to hear the gift God has given you!

Our flower committee, as always, continues to make beautiful arrangements for the alter each week.

Perhaps you have a special occasion you would like to commemorate this summer, or a special person

in your life you would like to remember. Call Patty in the church office to make a donation for flowers.

You may take them home after church to enjoy all week, or a Deacon will deliver them to a shut in after

services.

Have a safe and relaxing summer. See you in the Dell!

Dear Friends,

Thanks for all the prayers and kind thoughts while I was in ‘rehab’ and, more recently, celebrating my

90th birthday. The flowers and the cards were very much appreciated, as was the beautiful prayer

shawl.

We received a ‘message in a bottle’ thank you note from Katie Spotz: Patty, Just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate your donation to Schools for Water. Because of Old South Church we’ll be able to help three schools in India gain access to clean water. Thought you might think this is cool...this paper was taken from a notebook (waterproof!) that I brought with me on the Atlantic. Thanks for everything, Katie

Rev. Ian Lynch

My sense of being called by God and the church to authorized ministry...

The ministry of presence has been a hallmark of my calling since my early

days ministering among homeless people. I didn't need to preach for them to

know they were being sheltered in a church. They needed my ears more

than my mouth. When I was asked to baptize an infant in intensive care I

knew that my presence and later my tears at the funeral spoke more loudly

than any words. When a tornado ripped through our small town, as the

church opened its doors to become the town's relief center, I was on my bike,

to remind people that God was most surely already there. I now understand

that I am to preach at all times, using words when necessary. I also embrace that "to be" means "to be

with." When Jesus prayed that we may all be one, I don't believe he meant just church members or

even just Christians. The Church is not a building or an institution, it is beyond walls, both physical

and virtual. My call is an unfolding response to serving not just a congregation but an ever-

expanding community, whether connected by physical gathering or social networks.

Passions...

Every day brings the possibility of discovery. At the same time, things that are sought sometimes

elude. I choose to receive the unexpected as gift and use the disappointment of misses as motivation

to continue the chase. The wild goose is a Celtic metaphor for the untamed Spirit of God. I love the

idea of chasing an unpredictable God into those places I wouldn't find otherwise. As a merry fool

for God, I believe that God can use even me to change the world. I love discovering the presence of

Christ in the world today, typically among those who are least, last or lost. I am passionate about

experience over possession. I am passionate about journey over destination.

Additional Thoughts...

Where the Ganges and Yamuna rivers meet, it is said that there is a third, mythic river called the

Saraswati. The Hindu principle of Sangama asserts that where the two flow together a third is pre-

sent. Today, many previously opposed groups are finding not so much common ground as common

direction. The virulent political entrenchment fueled by the media seems to deny that, but where

Page 6: Sv july 2014

6

people have tired of being oppositional, there is an exciting convergence. At virtual places like Dark-

wood Brew (live, interactive worship at www.darkwoodbrew.org) and physical places like the Wild

Goose Festival, post-Evangelicals and post-Liberals are sharing gifts from their traditions instead of

casting the stones of tribal bickering. My personal journey has taken me through those different

lands. For a long time after leaving Evangelical theology, I defined myself by what I no longer be-

lieved. That made it difficult to accept those with whom I disagreed. As I've learned to hold doctrine

more lightly, I've not only let go of dogma, but also been able to appreciate again the reasons I once

believed as I did. During my ministry among homeless people in Salem, MA, not only did I receive

gifts from the wisdom among those I served, I also learned from the diversity of those who came to

help. I've found that focusing on the right practice of faith transcends the sort of difference that di-

vides.

A Meaningful Experience I Have Had in Ministry...

The experience that best typifies the significance of my ministry happened on the Sunday after an F3

tornado hit Brimfield. Years of encouraging a parish to get beyond its doors came to fruition; the

church walked the talk. A young man in our congregation had chosen not to receive Communion

until Confirmation. This Sunday would have been his first...had he not been helping to clear debris

at the home of one of our parishioners! To find joy in the Eucharist that day I had to walk through

the devastation to him, where he was showing what it meant to be church. I was simultaneously

proud and humbled as I broke bread with him in that sacred moment.

Additional thoughts...

I'm an avid technophile though not formally trained in technol-

ogy and certainly not an expert. I'm adept and busy in social me-

dia (Facebook, blogging, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, etc.) I'm

also an early adopter, I was part of the pastoral staff of Koinonia

Congregational Church in Second Life and have been viewing

Darkwood Brew since the earliest broadcasts. For the past year I

have volunteered as a blogger and chat administrator for Dark-

wood Brew. After experiencing the weekly Worship Team dur-

ing a visit while on sabbatical, I decided that I could utilize this

planning in my local church worship. I now attend the meeting

each week via Skype.
