SVE Chapel Pastor Koerselman

When Ernest Hemingway was struggling to make it as an author, he had a stroke of bad luck. He lost a suitcase containing all his manuscripts - manuscripts he had been working on for months and which he had been planning to publish in a book. He couldn’t conceive of redoing his work. He shared his predicament with his friend, poet Ezra Pound. Pound called it a stroke of good fortune! He assured Hemingway that when he rewrote the stories, he would forget the weak parts. The new version would be better than the old. Pound encouraged Hemingway to start over with a sense of optimism and confi dence. Hemingway did rewrite the stories and eventually became one of the major fi gures in American literature.

When we are faced with a frustration

in life, we often keep it to ourselves. Somehow we believe it will go away. It might, but it might not. God made us social human beings, sharing this load of living with those around us. Often times, a good friend or neighbor might have the right word of wisdom to get us on the road again.

But Hemingway took his sharing one step further. He found someone with expertise and experience in his fi eld and told him his frustration. Pound was a writer like he was. He could understand Hemingway’s problems better than most people. His few words of wisdom made all the diff erence in the world to Hemingway.

But the answer many of us are seeking is often close to home. Father’s Day is Sunday, June 19. This is the time we

can remember a timely word of wisdom from our father. There is a great scripture about a son who left home in a huff , but made bad decisions, blew all his money and came home broke. Instead of his father chastising him, he gave him a banquet, a new robe and new shoes. In other words the father forgave him and welcomed him home in spite of what he did. The son needed forgiveness and he got it from his father - that is exactly what he needed.

God is father of us all. He knows exactly what we need. Why not go to him, share our problem and then listen for his answer? Give it time, the answer will come. The Bible says: “Ask and you will receive, seek and you will fi nd, knock and the door will be open to you.”

sports/clubsBOCCE NEWS

Lois WierengaI hope everyone has had a chance to check out the new

AED (Automated External Defi brillator) which is now mounted on the wall just inside the back door of the Mesa Verde Room.

This is actually the eighth AED in our village now! Bet you didn’t realize that! There is one in the auditorium, one in the coff ee/activities room near the offi ce, one in each fi tness center, one by the tennis courts, one by the softball fi eld, one in the Palo Verde Building and now one in the Mesa Verde Building. Check them out! Be aware! Recently one of those AED’s was successfully used in our community to save one of our residents. You never know when there might be a need for one! We need to thank Bingo for covering the $1500 cost of purchasing this AED! The benefi t of having one so accessible to the bocce courts could, if ever needed, actually save the life of one of our members!!

SVE LADIES GOLF GayLynn Brewer

Summer has arrived and each week during April and May saw fewer players as the winter residents left for their summer homes. New players are welcome any time. If you are new to the village or haven’t played for a while, now is the perfect time to join the league. The applications forms are available in the Pro Shop.

The summer eclectic competition began for the SVE Ladies Golf League on May 3rd and will continue through September. A separate competition is held for the 9 hole and 18 hole leagues. Both gross and net winner will be named this fall. You do not have to be part of the eclectic competition to play during the summer.

On May 30th the annual Memorial Day 4 person scramble tournament was held. The couples club sponsored the tournament that was open to all ladies and men league members. The results will be published next month.

SVE Men’s Golf League Mike Kohrn

This year’s busy season is pretty much over and a lot of the winter residents have left the valley until the fall. It has been a very successful year for the SVE Men’s Golf League. There are 214 members.

The league had our annual hamburger lunch on April 7th and 154 that attended. Thanks to Charlie Simone and Roy Sager for cooking the burgers. Thanks to all who volunteered and worked to make this event a real success.

The 1st Annual Home & Home with Sunbird was a success. There were 34 participants from each club. The SVE winners were Gary Mack & John Walsh, 2nd place George Rithmiller & Bob Grant, 3rd place Larry Ash & Don Kuhn, 4th place Scott Rowe & Dave Simpson, and 5th place went to Andy Bormeth & Gary Sondreal. The circle hole winners were Dave Simpson, Scott Rowe, and Gary Sondreal. Closest to the pin winner was Larry Ash and the longest putt winner was Lyn Goodbar. The 1st day of the tournament ended with lunch served at Fat Willy’s.

Events coming up this summer are the Memorial Day and 4th of July tournaments. There will also be a Labor Day Challenge.

If you haven’t heard about the Men’s Golf League, please stop by the pro shop and talk with our super staff for the requirements necessary to join the Men’s League. The SVE Men’s Golf League plays all year round on Monday and Wednesday mornings. You can play when you choose and you are not obligated to play every Monday or Wednesday. We off er handicap league play, so if you are just getting started or you are a pro, there is a fl ight for you to compete in with like opponents.

Fitness Center Gary Chestek

Hats off to all of those regularly using the fi tness center, whether at the north or south end. This time of year many of our winter visitors have retreated, however, many winter walkers welcome the relief of an AC during the summer heat and use the treadmills in the fi tness centers.

I have heard remarkable stories of how conditioning at our age, defi nitely makes a diff erence. We need to maintain what we have!! No secret here!

Its an added bonus to increase our ability to balance and strength our legs to prevent falls. Falling is the enemy! Many of you have shared how you have enjoyed working out and have noticed more endurance just to get through the day and enjoy doing tasks yourself. Far be it for most of us to ask for help!!

As we grow older, an active lifestyle is more important than ever. Regular cardio, fl exibility and strength training increases your energy, maintains your independence, and manages symptoms of illness or pain. Exercise can even reverse some of the symptoms of aging. And, not only is exercise good for your body, it’s also good for your mind, mood, and memory. And, who doesn’t enjoy remembering what someone told us 2 minutes ago!

Whether you are generally healthy or are recovering from surgery, there are several ways to be active, improve confi dence, and your fi tness level. If there isn’t anyone to help you with the machines in the fi tness center, please look at the pictures and descriptions on each machine. If you’d prefer to stay close to the fl oor, the mats are available for stretching. Not to mention the strength you need just to get up off the mat!! And of course, the several pieces of equipment for cardio and stamina; i.e., treadmills, ellipticals, motion trainers, and 3 recumbent bikes! Pick your favorite activity and commit yourself to at least 3-4 times a week. That’s less than brushing your teeth!

Whatever activity you choose, enjoy and stay safe. Check with a doctor or your physical therapist if you are unsure of your abilities and limitations. Best advice, bring a friend or spouse!

SVE FHE(Family Home Evening Group)

Darlene DalleyThe Family Home Evening Group meets the second

Monday of every month in the Mesa Verde Room at 6:00 pm. In June we will meet on Monday the 13th. We have a pot luck dinner followed by a wide variety of programs. Our pot luck dinners are always delicious and more than plenty of food. Those attending are asked to bring a dish of their choosing that serves about 10 - 12 people. Dessert, we call “ice and snow,” will be furnished at this particular meeting, so please do not bring dessert unless you would like to bring cookies to go with it. We furnish all table service items and water to drink for the meal.

Our dinner is always followed by a program of some kind. It can be anything from games, to a musical performance, to a travelogue, to an informative talk. For June’s program we have invited Stephanie Meintzer to tell us about her Christmastime trip to Norway where she stayed in an ice hotel, saw the Northern Lights, went ice fi shing, etc.. So bring your winter undies and plan an a very “cool” evening, a little unusual for the month of June but refreshing.

All are invited. If you would like to attend, please call Darlene Dalley at 480-986-6985 to advise us you are coming so that we may be sure we have adequate table seating space. We would love to see you there.

SUNSATIONALSMay is here and the warmer weather,

too, but we love the heat of the tap numbers we are practicing for the show in 2017. In fact, practice will continue throughout the summer for those who wish, but offi cially begin again in September for all of the members. The Sunsationals are a dedicated group and always want to perform their best.

Our president, Linda Peterson, hosted a fabulous luncheon for the members. It’s hard to thank her enough for her care and leadership. Did we mention the food was amazing?!!!

The group also went out to lunch in Chandler – always nice to get together! The Sunsationals are still talking about the entertaining, delightful production of 42nd Street that they attended at the Gammage Theater.

We wish you all a beautiful summer – one fi lled with reunions, family, love, and happiness.

SVE BOOK CLUBBob Lander

During the month of May the Book Club read and reviewed, “All the Light We Cannot See” by Anthony Doerr. It’s an epic work of historical fi ction, ten years in the making with richly detailed language and characters who are both brave and heartbreaking. The stories of a blind French girl and a German orphan are woven together as Hitler’s occupied territory grows, and families are torn apart by the war, yet this gorgeous novel is the story of people who, against the odds, fi nd good in one another.

The book for June will be “Unbroken” by Laura Hillenbrand. We welcome new members.

Computer Club Bit and Bytes

Beverly SelvageSummer 2016 - Fix-it Tuesday will continue unless

otherwise posted. This service is open to all SVE residents. Bring your Windows computer to the Training Room 1 to 3 PM for updates, minor repairs, or adding Ram (you furnish Ram). The fee is $20.00, fi rst come, fi rst served. This service does not include updating computers to Windows 10. Make arrangements for a house call for this project or take your computer to a service center.

Summer 2016 - SLUG (Sunland Linux user group) meetings will continue on the second Wednesday of each month unless otherwise stated. It meets in the Computer Facility Room from 6-7:30 P.M.

In April, Joan Campbell from the Maricopa County Attorney’s Offi ce, gave a presentation on frauds and scams. She specifi ed to be very careful about phone calls asking for money from grandchildren, fake charities, and fake prizes. Most legitimate banks, credit card companies and banks don’t ask for personal information including your social security number etc. Please be careful.

While we are discussing staying safe, you need to keep your computer protected from hackers. Be sure to install and keep updated on CCleaner, an Anti- Virus software like Avast, Malwarebytes and Super Anti Spyware. So check for updates often or download them when told that they are out of date. Hopefully you will update them as some need to be done manually.

To see the schedule of coming events be sure and go to our Website svecc.com Lots of articles on Windows 10, free websites, tips, help group and a great newsletter every Month. Oh yes, a joke at the end. CONSERVATIVE CLUB

Bill BathmanOur meeting this month will be on Thursday, June 9th

from 10:00 am to 11:00 am in the Mesa Verde Room. We are in contact with two candidates for the upcoming Congressional elections and await confi rmation of their participation. Life is always full of surprises. One thing is sure, we have lots of fun at the Club meetings and you are cordially invited to join us.

DOGS ‘R USL. Paulsen

“Shadow” was born 10/28/12 in a hoarder’s home, which means he had to survive on his own because there were many, many dogs. Fortunately, the place was shut down February 7, 2015, and he was sent to Valley of the Sun Dog Rescue. Phyllis Xanders found him at PetSmart during a Saturday adoption day. He is part Chihuahua and part Dachshund. He was

taking obedience lessons which she is continuing. He was afraid of everything and everybody when she fi rst got him, but he is doing better every day.

The people who were caring for him loved him and still, to this day, if they are in the store when Phyllis & Shadow arrive, they remember his name and he goes running to them.

Shadow was pretty fat, because he had learned to scrounge for food. When left alone for a while one day, Phyllis came home to fi nd him on the fl oor with a fl ashlight that he had taken apart. Now he has plenty of squeaky toys all over the house.

Phyllis says: “I thank the Lord, Jesus, for fi nding this dog for me on October 10, 2015. I love him.”

Our last meeting before summer break was held at the Tia Rose restaurant on April 16. Our meetings will resume September 17.

SVE GOLF CONDO IIMimi Handorff

Ho hum! It’s the start of the lazy days of an Arizona summer. For those of you reading this from your northern home, you might think nothing happens here this time of year. About the only diff erence now is the lines at restaurants are almost negligible, the streets are still full of cars but it’s easier negotiating them. Costco is still busy but easier to fi nd a parking space. Last summer was my fi rst to experience AZ summer months. And you know what—life still went on. About my only complaint was getting back into the car after it sat in the sun in a parking lot. Ouch!!! that steering wheel gets hot. Any remedies other than not taking car out of garage?

Have you experienced Golf Condo II website on our AAM management website? Anything you want to know about AAM, your account, and Golf Condo II is available with a couple clicks. There is a charge of $20.99 per 4 ft. x 8 ft. load. For load information call City of Mesa at 480-644-6789.

The fi rst phase of palm tree trimming will take place May 2 and August 15; palm “hangers” will be taken care of.

My family and I want to thank our condo group and SVE friends for their kind remembrance with cards and personal thoughts regarding the death of my husband Jim on March 27, 2016. You are special people.

Pretty quiet here so please call or e-mail me if you have an item of interest. #259, 480-981-8559, [email protected]

We have many generous people to thank for donations. An antique quilt from Mary Logan. Fabric from Kathy Piha and Meredith Yoder. Dean Curtiss delivered sewing supplies from Sue Mullins and Janice Bobo delivered fabric from Cynthia Ingram.

Eileen VeVea took a donated Singer sewing machine to our favorite repair person and we have an extra machine to use for sew days.

The 2 1/2 inch strips in three diff erent lengths continue to grow in number and when cut into a square come out to be such beautiful quilts. One quilt takes 48 squares plus sashing and borders.

The summer may bring vacations but we need to continue making items for the fall craft show with dish rags, scrubbies, and a few other ideas to be made.

We received a thank you note from Helens Hope Chest for quilts and bags.

We will continue thru the summer on charity quilts and other quilting kits that Elaine Ekdom continues to fi nd for us.
