BCBA Blount County Beekeepers Association March 2016 Swarm control and catching swarms to be focus of March meeting The March meeting of the BCBA feature about swarms – how to prevent them and how to catch them if you can’t.. Veteran beekeeper Rickey Bailey will talk about swarming and some of the techniques beekeepers traditionally use to prevent swarming. Doug Hardwick, a longtime member of the BCBA, will discuss ways of catching swarms and the equipment you will need to do this. The meeting will be Monday, March 14, at 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. at the Blount County Library. Seasonal management tips will be presented by one of our veteran beekeepers. All of these speakers will present interesting information and opinions, and there will be plenty of time for questions and comments. As always, our meetings are free and open to the public. Invite a friend to come along with you. Even if the friend isn’t interested in becoming a beekeeper, we always have lively, friendly discussions about what we should be doing with our bees. If you aren’t doing this already, you should check out BlountBees.com on a regular basis. Better yet, you should go to the site and sign up for an email subscription (free, of course). New beekeeper class set for Sat., March 12 The BCBA's new beekeeper class, led by Stacey Adair and Jose Ashbrook, will be Saturday, March 12, at the Maryville Church of Christ. The class will begin at 9 a.m. and end by 3 p.m. This is the same location as our Beekeeping 101 short course on Feb. 20. This class differs from the short course in that it will be more practical and handson. Those participating in the course will be able to look inside a hive (without bees, of course), handle frames, learn about medications, the basics of setting up an apiary, and many other aspects of daytoday beekeeping.

Woodenware  workshop  set  for  Saturday,  March  19,  in  Alcoa    The  BCBA’s  annual  woodenware  workshop  will  be  Saturday,  March  19,  at  the  Masonic  Lodge  in  Alcoa.    The  workshop  will  begin  at  9  a.m.  and  last  until  about  noon.    This  workshop  is  specifically  designed  to  show  new  beekeepers  how  to  put  together  the  different  parts  of  the  hive,  and  how  to  maintain  that  hive.    This  is  an  event  that  is  always  a  lot  of  fun  and  allows  new  beekeepers  particularly  to  get  a  head  start  on  putting  together  their  apiary.    The  workshop  is  free  and  there  is  no  registration  necessary.    Just  show  up  with  your  equipment.

Beekeeper  short  course  draws    big  crowd  of  new  beekeepers    Beekeeping  101,  the  day-‐long  short  course  for  new  and  potential  beekeepers,  drew  a  crowd  of  nearly  200  people  when  it  was  held  on  Saturday,  Feb.  20.    The  short  course  was  the  one  we  had  previously  conducted  during  two  nights  in  February  at  the  library.  The  number  of  people  wanting  to  know  about  beekeeping  had  grown  to  such  an  extent,  however,  that  the  library  could  no  longer  accommodate  it  comfortably.    So  this  year  we  moved  it  to  a  Saturday  and  changed  the  location  to  the  Maryville  Church  of  Christ.  That  allowed  us  not  only  to  have  a  larger  crowd  but  also  to  have  vendors  and  their  stands.    All  that  occurred  on  Feb.  20.    Credit  for  the  short  course’s  success  goes  to  the  BCBA  board  of  directors  and  particularly  to  our  president  Harlen  Breeden.

BCBA  board  would  like  to  consider  different  locations  for  meetings

The  BCBA  board  voted  to  continue  its  2016  meetings  at  the  Blount  County  Library.  The  board  had  discussed  the  possibility  of  changing  the  location  of  our  meeting  because  of  the  size  of  the  library  room  and  our  growing  membership.  No  suitable  alternative  was  found,  however.  If  you  have  any  suggestions  in  this  regard,  please  contact  one  of  the  board  members  about  it.
