  • SUMMARY

The Swayze Greenstone Belt is located in the west extention of the Abitibi Greenstone Belt of the Canadian E'recambrian Shield,

The area has been subjected to intermittent waves of exploration since the discovery of the Timmins gold camp in the early 1990's. Numerous gold and base metal occurrences have been located and worked previously throughouit the belt, and minor gold production has taken place.

Significant reserves of copper and zinc exist in the south- central sector of Cunningham Twp., (i.e. The former Consolidated Shunsby Mines property).

Extensive overburden cover and a fragmented land position has previously discouraged and large systematic exploration of the region.

The current prospecting venture was initiated in the summer of 1990 in an attempt to locate target areas capable of hosting gold and base metals in extensively overburden .covered terrain. Rock, soil and lake sediment sampling was carried out over select areas in an attempt to locate geochemically anomalous concentrations of these elements. A priority was given to the evaluation of areas along geologic strike of known mineral occurrences.

Favourable geology and interesting alteration patterns were encountered at Brette Lake, North Halcrow Twp., North Rollo Twp., Dore Twp., and Cunningham Twp. Geochemically anomalous gold assays from North Halcrow Twp. are encouraging and a follow-up evaluation is anticipated in 1991. Fifteen claims were staked to cover the west extention of a copper - zinc bearing iron formation in Cunningham Township.

With two of the ten areas examined returning encouraging results the program must be considered a siuccess. A follow-up evaluation is anticipated for 1991, to examine those target areas not visited in 1990, and to detail areas that returned encouraging results in the preliminary study.

    INTRODUCTION

In January and February 1990, the Swayze area assessment files were reviewed in the Toronto government office in an effort to locate areas of open ground with preferred exploration potential. Ten areas were selected for field examination.

In July and August, 8 of the target areas were visited and evaluated by prospecting and geochemical survey as appropriate.

In total, 142 rock samples, 108 Humus samples, and 51 Lake Bottom samples were submitted to Barringer Laboratories for analyses. All samples were assayed for gold. Analysis for Ag, Cu, Zn and As were completed as appropriate.

    LOCATION fit ACCESS

The Swayze area is centered approximately 65 miles southwest of the mining community of Timmins in east-central Ontario. Highway 101 traverses the north boundary of the area enroute from Timmins to Wawa. A network of logging roads provide ready access to most parts of the area. Rail and power facilities are present locally.

    REGIONAL GEOLOGY

The Swayze Greenstone Belt is an extention of the Abitibi Greenstone Belt of the Canadian Precambrian Shield. The geology is dominated by east-west trending steeply dipping sequences of volcanics and sediments, interrupted locally by mafic and felsic intrusives.

Gold and base metal occurrences have been recorded throughout the area from a variety of geologic settings.

    HISTORY OF EXPLORATION

Initial exploration was carried out for iron prior to 1910. Gold exploration was initiated in the 1930 "s. A number of companies have carried out gold and base metal exploration programs in the area since that time. The Jerome mine in Osway Township produced 56,878 ounces of gold before closing in 1945. The Tionaga and the Orofino Mines in Horwood Township, and the Halcrow-Swayze Mine in Halcrow Township produced lesser amounts of gold.

The most significant base metal prospect known in the area is the Consolidated Shunsby Mines property in Cunningham Township. Copper-zinc mineralization occurs in a cherty iron formation. In 1990 Cunningham Township was the site of considerable activity as companies re-evejluat.ed the economic potential of this deposit.

    EXAMINED

    CUNNINGHAM TOWNSHIP

The proposed program of rock, soil, and Jake bottom sampling was cancelled in consideration of the renewed activity by others in Cunningham Township. Much of the favourable land on strike to the east of the Consolidated Shunsby Mines property had been staked by others at the time of our arrival in July 1990. Fifteen claims were staked over open ground on the west extention of the mineralized chert formation. Four sulphide rich samples were collected from a pit on the favourable iron formation, approximately 1700 feet east of the claims staked by Troup 6 Otton. All samples returned significant Cu, and Zn values. Sample "CUN-1" returned assays of G.4% Cu, 2.0 5* Zn and 79.0 ppm Ag.(see listing in appendix 1).

Sampling of a rusty carbonate rich shear in the area of an airborne anomaly in east-central Cunningham Township returned disappointing results(spl.#'s 8527, 28, 29). The anomaly of interest is hosted by mafic volcanics and is north of the favourable mineralized horizon.

Exclusive of the staking six man days were devoted to prospecting the Cunningham Township area.

    BRETTE LAKE

The Kenty Mine property is located in the north-east corner of Swayze Township. Gold mineralization at the Kenty Mine is reportedly associated with quartz-carbonate-pyrite veins filling fractures in volcanics, sediments, and intrusives(O.D.M Geoscience Report 157, 1977). Mineralization was reportedly best where the veins cut volcanics. The mine property is located close to an east-west trending contact between mafic and felsic volcanics.

The current prospecting venture was targeted at evaluating the the mineral potential of the open ground along the favourable inafic-felsic contact west of the Kenty Mine property. A canoe was portaged into the east end of Brette Lake. Rock, Humus and Lake bottom sampling was carried out along a 3 mile section of the favourable horizon to the east end of Swayze Lake.

Sampling from the west end of Brette Lake returned early encouragement. Humus sampling returned gold values of up to 490 ppb.lspl. B-l,0-t80N), and lake bottom sampling returned geochemical values of up to 807 ppb. Au(spl B-14). Unfortunately re-assay of the humus and follow-up lake bottom sampling failed to substantiate the initial findings. Outcrop is scarce in the sample areas and where sampled returned disappointing results.

  • l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l

l\t the east end of Brette Lake, lake bottom sampling ( spl, B-l) returned 20 ppb. Au, and 90 ppm. Cu. (geochemical 3 y anomalous for the area). The anomalous sample was collected from a shallow depth and consisted of a highly organic medium. A follow-up sampling was carried out over the area with a long handled tube auger. Surface clays from beneath 30 feet of organic medium returned no significant gold or copper values.

Rock samples collected from north-east of Brette Lake returned anomalous gold values of up to 481ppb. The area of interest is located approximately l mile west the the old Kenty Mine. Geochemically anomalous gold values were obtained where quartz- carbonate-pyrite veins transect mafic volcanics. The mineralized area occurs immediately north of the target felsic- mafic contact. A series of week A.E.M. anomalies occur in this area. Although lake and stream bottom sampling 1/4 mile to the west failed to return significant results, soil sampling and I.P survey could prove of interest in evaluating the mile long section of the favourable contact from Brette Lake to the Kenty Mine .

A total of 12 mandays v^ere devoted to prospecting in the Brette Lake area. An additional 4 mandays were consumed in establishing and dismantling camp and waiting on weather.

AREA 3B - WAKAMI RIVER AREA, SWAYZE SOUTHEAST

Rock, lake and stream sediment sampling was completed in the southeast corner of Swayze Township in an attempt to determine the mineral potential of A.E.M anomalies of unknown origin on strike to the east of known gold mineralization at Cree Lake. Outcrop in the area is very limited. An outcrop of fragmental felsic volcanics exposed on the west shore of Horshoe Lake returned slightly elevated gold values from an area df narrow quartz-carbonate veining{spl's 8534, 35, and 36 returned 5, 25, &3S ppb Au respectively). Lake sediment sample B.12 from this same area returned 16 ppb. Au. These results are approximately 5 times background for the area but are too low to be considered significant in view of the other results from the area.

Sampling of an exposure of fractured, silicified and carbonatized iron formation south of Horshoe Lake returned no significant gold values(spl's 8537 and 38 returned less than 2 ppb Au.).

A total of 4 rnandays were devoted to accessing and sampling in the area.

    AREA 5B - ROLLO NORTHWEST

Reconnaissance prospecting and sampling was completed in the area of weak A.E.M. anomalies located proximal to the granite volcanic contact. Outcrop is lacking in the main area of interest and the

target anomalies remain unexplained. No mineralized boulders of any consequence were located.

Brecciated and carbonatized feldspar porphyry is exposed in a new road cut at the east side of the area. Pyrite pyrrhotite and chalcopyrite were identified in the area of interest. Assay results were disappointing with the best sample returning 19 ppb. Au., and 600 ppm. Cu.

Four mandays were devoted to finding access to the area and completing surface sampling.

    DORE AND HEENAN TOWNSHIP

Reconnaissance prospecting and sampling was carried out over select portions of Heenan and Dore townships after an initial road reconnaissance revealed the presence of several rusty shear zones.

The location of drill core from a 1970 drill program by United States Smelting Refining and Mining was located in northern Heenan Twp., and selectively sampled for gold.

An attempt to traverse into the Claim Lake area in eastern Heenan Twp. to locate an old gold showing proved unsuccessfull. The distance was too great and the terrain too rough.

An initial assay of .25opt Au was obtained from a narrow quartz filled shear in northwest Dore Twp. A follow up field check failed to substantiate the early results. The showing was found to be on staked land and further investigation was not attempted.

Two broad areas of sheared and carbonated mafic volcanics were encountered in east-central Heenan township. The shearing is roughly conformable with stratrigraphy and trends approximately east-west. Quartz veinlets and pyrite mineralization were observed locally. Extensive sampling failed to identify any areas of anomalous gold.

Drill core from the U.S.S.R.&M 1970 program was located in two areas as indicated in the assessment records. In both instances the core from several holes had been dumped and badly mixed. An inspection indicated that, very limited sampling had been completed on the core. The program had been targeted at Base

Rock, soil and stream sediment sampling in Mallard Township was carried out in an attempt to confirm potential extentions to previously recorded mineralized zones.

Outcrop exposure was found to be very limited in areas of open ground. Three check samples from a known mineralized shear near the mouth of the Woman River confirmed the presence of anomalous gold .

One River sediment sample was collected but no signigicant assay values obtained. A humus line approximately l mile along strike from a gold showing held by Noranda returned no significant geochemical values.

An exposure of sheared and carbonatized porphyry located on the main Haul Road 8 Km. south of Hwy 101 was sampled (spl 8525) and returned no significant gold or base metal values.

    CONCLUSIONS

The Swayze prospecting program produced some interesting results. Several previously unrecorded shear zones were encountered. Unfortunately, the largest. of these structures produced disappointing assay results. Somewhat encouraging results were encountered in the east Brette Lake Area, northern Halcrow Twp, and western Cunningham Township. The program resulted in the staking of fifteen claims over a base metal prospect in Cunningham Township. A follow-up program will be considered for 1991.
