TURTLES 1• Enter water safely with carer. Carer to

become relaxed interacting with child• Condition baby for submersion using

verbal and physical triggers. Experience water on the head and body

• On displayed readiness, with instructor guidance, undertake assisted submersion on trigger words and physical cues

• Display comfort when performing assisted front and back floating activities

• Be gently rocked, turned and towed through water. Maintain baby’s grasp reflex by gripping t-shirts and fingers

• Be encouraged to splash the arms and kick the legs using trigger words

TURTLES 3• With support enter the water from a seated

position towards the carer. Be turned towards the edge to hold. Hand walk along the pool edge with assistance if necessary

• Continue breath control activities and water on the face. Encourage independent face submersions

• Experience assisted and unassisted submersions between adults, to adult, in shallow water

• Initiate independent free float activities under supervision. Continue with assisted back floats

• Experience body orientation and rotation in a vertical position

• Move legs up and down with carer encouragement (kick, kick). Experience reaching for objects and pulling arms through the water

TURTLES 5• With support enter the water using a slide

in entry and hold onto the pool edge. With minimal assistance attempt to climb out of the pool

• Once breath control is mastered, blow bubbles with face fully submerged

• Demonstrate independent submersion with carer encouragement

• Front and back floating with and without support. Build to a 5 second release

• With assistance rotation body from back to front whilst holding a floatation aid

• Display independent propulsion of kick and paddle. Experience manipulation of the propulsive skills

TURTLES 2• With support reach for carer and enter

the water from a seated position. Exit the water with the carer

• Extend baby’s breath control. Initiate putting water on the face, head and body

• On readiness, extend assisted submersion• On readiness front float between adults

and or platforms. Assisted back float with confidence

• With assistance roll from one side to the other – back to front, front to back

• Carer to support legs and arms to kick and paddle on front and back

TURTLES 4• With support safely step into the water from a

standing position towards the carer. Be turned towards the edge to hold. Hand walk along the pool edge and climb out with assistance

• Independently submerge the face and hold breath

• Experience assisted and unassisted submersions and hold on to pool edge with assistance if necessary

• With encouragement float on front and back using a floatation aid

• With support experience crawling, walking, kicking and climbing on a floating mat

• Assisted and unassisted swims using arms and legs through the water

TURTLES 6• With support safely jump into the water from a

standing position towards the carer and return to the wall ready to exit. Exit that water safely unassisted

• Blow bubbles with the face fully submerged, take a breath and repeat the sequence

• With encouragement initiate own submersion and recover securely. Retrieve objects from the bottom of the pool in progressively deeper water

• Front and back floating with and without support. Build to a 10 second release

• With assistance rotate body in a vertical position whilst holding a flotation aid

• Refine propulsive movements

TIGER SHARKS STAGE 1 BEGINNER• Safely enter water. Safe Exit• Exhale in Water – Face In• Open eyes under water – identify an object• Submerge – Waist deep (minimum)• Glide forward and recover – Waist deep

entry into and exit from the water. Float for 10-15 seconds, with a flotation aid

TIGER SHARKS STAGE 3 PRELIMINARY• Freestyle – Swim 10m Breathing• Glide backward and kick 5m. Waist Deep

(minimum)• Breaststroke Leg Action – Swim 5m. On

back (with board)• Demonstrate survival sculling. On back• Demonstrate a forward roll (basic)• S3 Safety Survival Sequence #3 – Glide and

Swim 10m, recover to upright position. Support body in an upright position and signal distress

action• Demonstrate a Surface Dive. Shoulder deep.

Recover an object• S5 Safety Survival Sequence #5 – Step in entry.

Scull for 60 seconds using a combination of survival sculling and horizontal sculling, keeping the face above water. Grasp a flotation aid thrown for support and swim for 60 seconds. Be pulled to safety by a partner

TIGER SHARKS STAGE 2 WATER DISCOVERY• Glide forward and kick 3m. Horizontal

body position. Face in• Glide backward, kick and recover. No set

distance• Freestyle – Swim 5m. Face submerged• Scull / tread water. Basic hand and leg

action• S2 Safety Survival Sequence #2 – Glide

forward and recover to a standing position. Float for 30 seconds, with a flotation aid. Be pulled to safety

TIGER SHARKS STAGE 4 WATER AWARENESS• Freestyle – Swim 15m. Regular Breathing• Backstroke – Swim 10m. Catch up acceptable• Survival Backstroke – Swim 10m. Below water

arm recovery• Breaststroke - Swim 5m. Basic• Scull Headfirst on Back. Without leg action• Recover an Object. Chest deep (minimum)• Swim in Deep Water. (Only 1.8m available)• S4 Safety Survival Sequence #4 – Swim and

survival scull for 60 seconds. Grasp an object and be pulled to safety

TIGER SHARKS STAGE 6JUNIOR• Freestyle – Swim 50m. Correct Technique• Backstroke – Swim 25m. Correct Technique• Breaststroke – 25m. Correct Technique• Demonstrate a Dive Entry. Shoulder deep

minimum required• S6 Safety Survival Sequence #6 – Dive entry

into deep water. Rotation of the tucked body keeping the face above water. Swim slowly for 3 minutes using two recognised survival strokes. Grasp aid thrown for support and kick to safety

• S8 Safety Survival Sequence #8 – Dressed in swimwear, shorts and t-shirt demonstrate: 2 minutes survival sculling, floating or treading water then; 3 minutes swimming slowly using three recognised strokes keeping the arms below the surface, changing each minute

Eggbeater kick with arms for support• Surface Dive and recover object in 1.2m water,

TIGER SHARKS STAGE 16 BRONZE MEDALLIONTHEORY COMPONENT• Safe water practices, survival in the water, self preservation, recognising

an emergency, assessment before and during a rescue, priorities for rescue, CPR Theory, acceptance of responsibility, use of bystanders, emergency care and contacting emergency services

PRACTICAL• Resuscitation: Demonstrate effective CPR• Swim 400m continuously within 13 minutes: 100m Freestyle, 100m

Breaststroke, 100m Survival Backstroke, 100m Sidestroke• Timed Tow: Swim 50 metres, then to a patient 50m within 3 min 15 sec• Survival and Rescue Skills: Demonstrate a range of survival techniques

and appropriate rescues for range of different aquatic environments and scenarios

• Spinal Injuries: Basic management of a suspected spinal injury in shallow water

• Rescue Initiative: Demonstrate iniative in effecting a rescue of two people who are in difficulty up to 15m from safety

OUTCOMESSuccessful candidates receive a• Royal Life Saving Bronze Medallion Certificate (valid for 12 months) and/

or Royal Life Saving Rescuscitation Certificate (valid for 12 months)• A Statement of Attainment for the below Units of Competency from

the SIS National Sport, Fitness and Recreation Training Package may be available. It is best to check with your local Royal Life Saving Office about whether the course you are interested in is offering the vocational units.
