Principal’s Column

Welcome to the 2017 School Year. While the end of a school year carries with it a happy and celebratory mood, equally the start of a new school year is an exciting time, with every anticipation of a successful year with many outstanding opportunities for our students. Given the heat we have been experiencing, our students have settled in to the new school year extremely well, which is what we have come to expect from Kyogle High School students. Well done to all. Swimming Carnival Given the hot conditions the swimming carnival was a great respite from the heat and was enjoyed by all. Student behaviour and participation was excellent and the outstanding organisation by Mr Rasborsek and Miss Radley ensured the day ran smoothly. Students leave during the Term A reminder to our school community that the NSW Department of Education and Training requires that parents arrange holidays during school vacations. If your family holiday is during school time, you will need to inform the School Principal in advance and submit a ‘permission to leave from the school’. An application for leave should be provided at least two weeks prior to departure. Leave forms can be obtained from the Front Office. Australia Day Awards Miles Brown and Eloise Crawter represented Kyogle High School on Australia Day at the local ceremony, as part of the official party. Their speech was thoughtful, well presented and was well received by the public – I was very proud to be there to hear them speak. Once again our students were nominated in all sections and the nominees and award recipients should be very proud of themselves. Thank you to Ms McDonough for posting pictures from the day on our school FaceBook site. Online Survey Last Friday an online survey was emailed out to parents. The survey is designed to provide information for the school executive to use with future school planning as well as reflect on parent satisfaction of our school. Information will be used in the 2016 Annual School Report.

I thank the families who have already completed the survey.

Regards

Gae Masters

From the Deputy’s Desk

Welcome to this issue of the KHS newsletter, the first for 2017. Already our school has returned active and engaged commencing with our swimming carnival last Friday. Congratulations to Mr Rasborsek and Ms Radley for their successful format which drew greater participation and interest across a very warm day. On Wednesday 15th February at our 10am assembly the school will induct our 2017 SRC members and House Captains. Family are invited to join us at this time. I extend a warm welcome to Year 7 students, new students and new staff joining KHS in 2017. This year continues the school focus on Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) with student and community consultation. As part of our commitment to developing positive community members KHS has collaborated with a number of agencies to bring to the school the following programs:

Yr 7 & 8: The Hurting Game. Friday 17th Feb

Yr 9: Think Smart, Stay Smart. Monday 13th Feb

Yr 10: Love Bites. Tuesday 21st Feb These are important social programs and all students are expected to attend. There are a number of issues that I would ask for everyone’s co-operation:

Wearing of school uniform

Remaining on school grounds unless students have a leave pass

Communicating in a respectful way with everyone we encounter in our day at KHS

As always, my office remains open to all students, staff and community members and I look forward to your company in 2017.

Regards

Dave Hanley

National Computer Science School (NCSS) The National Computer Science School (NCSS) is a ten day summer school for students going into Years 11 and 12. NCSS brings together talented young people from around Australia for an intensive course of computer programming and website development in the School of IT at the University of Sydney. Isaac Flower, Year 11 was successful in gaining entry into this prestigious course over the summer holidays. Isaac enjoyed the school as it gave him an insight into many aspects of University life. They stayed at The Womens College and attended lectures, site visits (including Google). Isaac thoroughly enjoyed himself and highly recommends the school to interested students. Congratulations Isaac!

SWIMMING CARNIVAL

Congratulations to all students who attended the school swimming carnival last Friday. This year there was greater focus placed on Sporting House spirit and participation. The carnival also required students to nominate for races prior to the day for competitive racing. Students responded well to the changes, seeing a boost in attendance and participation from previous years. Teykoa Harley was outstanding on the day, breaking the 15 Years Boys 50m Freestyle record. Originally held by Jye Rogers in a time of 29.54 seconds, Teykoa dropped it down to a solid 28.84 seconds. Teykoa was also successful in setting a new 15 Years Boys 100m Butterfly record in a time of 1:21.72.

Congratulations to all relay teams entered on the day in each age category for your competitive spirit and enthusiasm. As it was a new format in forming Stage relays you are all now record holders in the school. This relay format will continue in an effort to support students in participating from small age groups.

The Sporting House point score was won by Lindesay on 950 points, second was Larkin on 911 points, third was Fegan on 897 and fourth was Richmond on 843 points.

Congratulations to all the following students who achieved Age Champion Status: Girls: 12 Years Shannon Murphy 13 Years Ruby Hill 14 Years Tanayah Harley 15 Years Jessica King 16 Years Rhianna Gilmour 17+ Years Teagan Pederson

Boys: 12 Years Noah Anderson 13 Years Kalahni Spargo 14 Years Aidan Gilmour 15 Years Teykoa Harley 16 Years Bodhi Karam-Witcombe 17+ Years Sonny Mercer and Rueben Flower (joint winners)

All Age Champions will be presented with a Merit Certificate to go towards My House Rules and presented with Age Champion certificates and medallions at the School Sports Award Assembly held in Term 4.

CHS Zone Swimming carnival will be held in Lismore on the 24th February 2017. Permission notes will be distributed to all successful students in the next week.
