About MelbourneSmart, captivating, multicultural, unique, fun, trend-setting, individual and welcoming, Melbourne is the capital city of Victoria and home to four million people.
In 2017, Melbourne was again named the world’s most liveable city by The Economist Intelligence Unit’s Global Liveability Survey and is known as Australia’s cultural, culinary and sporting capital.
Hawthorn campusStudent population: 22,000 Distance from Melbourne city centre: 7 km (10 minutes by train)
Hawthorn is the main campus for international students. The campus is set directly behind Glenferrie Road. This vibrant shopping hub includes laneways and arcades where you can get great coffee and find a quiet place to read.
There is a diverse choice of restaurants and cafés plus dozens of shops and boutiques, and a bookshop. Two supermarkets and a number of international grocers mean you’ll never have to go far for the essentials.
You can also take a break from study to visit the Central Gardens, go to the gym at the Hawthorn Aquatic and Leisure Centre, or visit Hawthorn’s newest movie theatre, Lido Cinemas.
Multimillion-dollar facilities Major refurbishments and new infrastructure are a feature at our Hawthorn campus. The development of new buildings, renovation of existing buildings and beautiful landscaping enhance the study environment and education experience we offer our students.
Studying a pathway programAll of our pathway programs are taught on campus in Hawthorn and our students have access to all of the university’s services, clubs and facilities. As Swinburne offers programs to both local and international students, you will have many opportunities for cross-cultural exchange, allowing you to build strong friendships and global networks.

TOP 10 THINGS to do in Melbourne
Go to festivals, watch a show or musical
Melbourne offers an array of entertainment. Some local festivals that have garnered the world’s attention are the Melbourne Comedy Festival, Melbourne International Film Festival and the Melbourne Writers’ Festival. The city also hosts many top-tier shows and musicals throughout the year.
Explore Victoria’s landmarks, museums and parks
Melbourne has many heritage landmarks, interesting museums and lush green parks. Shaped like the Eiffel Tower, the Arts Centre is the focal point of Melbourne’s cultural scene; the Royal Botanic Gardens is home to over 50,000 plant species; and the Hellenic Museum is a fabulous showcase of Greek history in Melbourne... and this is just the tip of the iceberg!
See native Australian animals
Visit Healesville Sanctuary to come face-to-face with kangaroos, wombats and other native animals. Drive to Phillip Island to cuddle koalas and watch fairy penguins make their way home as the sun sets.
Drink coffee
Coffee is part of every Melbournian’s staple diet. In addition to the city centre, suburbs like St Kilda, Richmond, Fitzroy and South Melbourne are worth visiting to find your favourite blend. Close to Swinburne, Axil Coffee Roasters also regularly makes the list for Melbourne’s best coffee spots.
Go on a culinary adventure
Get ready to sample food from around the world at Melbourne's many restaurants, cafés and bars. Bustling Chinatown serves up some of the finest Asian cuisine and many city streets are dedicated to Vietnamese, Japanese, Italian, Spanish, French and Greek cuisines.

Shop at boutiques, craft markets and malls
Ask any Australian for the best place to go shopping in the country and you’ll undoubtedly hear them say Melbourne. Shopping in Melbourne draws international visitors that enjoy browsing the various shops, boutiques and markets that the city is famous for. There is an array of local designers and major international brands to cater to every taste, from high-end to high-street.
Explore Melbourne’s laneways and arcades
Al fresco eateries and hole-in-the-wall bars all nestle side by side in laneways threading the city centre, giving Melbourne that European feel that it is so well known for. Many of Melbourne’s arcades – like the Block Arcade – have achieved heritage status and are home to boutique shops selling unique wares and work by local designers.
Check out Melbourne’s street art
Melbourne is known as one of the world’s best street art capitals; it’s a city that recognises the power of expression through art and provides public spaces for artists to display their work. Come across larger-than-life murals and loud-and-proud pop culture or political art as you make your way through various art hotspots in the city, including Hosier Lane, Croft Alley and AC/DC Lane.
Get into the sporting spirit!
From test cricket, the Australian Open tennis and Grand Prix motor racing to the Rip Curl Pro at Bells Beach and the Spring Racing Carnival, Melbourne takes the crown as the world’s sporting capital, as adjudged by the 2016 SportsBusiness Awards. The city also has a mild obsession with Aussie Rules Footy, a hybrid sport of rugby, soccer and an indigenous Australian ballgame.
Explore our backyard
Victoria is filled with fantastic sights and attractions, such as the Great Ocean Road and the Twelve Apostles; famous surf beaches; Phillip Island (home of the Penguin Parade); the untamed wilderness of Wilsons Promontory; the historical goldfields of Ballarat and Bendigo; renowned wineries in the Yarra Valley and skiing opportunities at the Victorian snowfields. Melbourne is a gateway to Australia – you can take the overnight ferry to Tasmania or take a train, bus or plane to other destinations around the country.

LIVING IN Melbourne

In the city centre, you can explore grand, tree-lined streets and discover hidden laneways while experiencing first-class shopping, dining, theatre and entertainment options. A wide range of festivals are held throughout the year and you’ll also find a number of cultural and arts venues such as the National Gallery of Victoria and the Australian Centre for the Moving Image.
Melbourne’s inner-urban suburbs are also popular destinations: St Kilda offers beaches, clubs, bars and restaurants; Carlton has an Italian feel with coffee shops, pizzerias, bookshops and an arthouse cinema; Prahran is filled with trendy fashion boutiques; and Fitzroy has a bohemian vibe with unique shopping and dining options.
Living costsLiving costs will depend on the accommodation you choose and the lifestyle you lead and, as such, all costs in this section are indicative only.

Add to this a budget of approximately A$2,300 to A$5,000 for the initial costs of establishing yourself in Melbourne, and approximately A$1,000 to A$2,000 if you need to purchase a computer.

English Placement Test
Our English Placement Test (EPT) is ideal for you if you do not have an IELTS or other approved international test score. You can sit this test free-of-charge at our Hawthorn campus or online at any Swinburne representative office.
The test measures all skills and will take approximately one hour to complete. Based on your results, we will recommend the number of weeks you will need to complete to enter your chosen course.
Swinburne reserves the right to conduct a placement test for all students in the first week of your study to assess your level of English. If your results show that you need more or fewer weeks than originally offered, this may affect the duration of your English course and, in turn, affect timely entry into your future courses.
Direct entry to Swinburne
Students who successfully complete English for Academic Purposes to the required level can progress directly to their Swinburne course. Entry is subject to achieving the required results and all other conditions. English language requirements and other prerequisites for individual courses can vary.

Other INFORMATION
Overseas student health cover
All student visa holders must have overseas student health cover (OSHC) for the duration of their study.
Swinburne will arrange your visa-length OSHC membership with our preferred provider. The OSHC fee will be included with your deposit indicated in your letter of offer.
Visa-length OSHC membership is a once-only payment that provides rate protection for the duration of the visa. This means that even if OSHC fees increase during the duration of your visa, you do not have to pay any increase.
If you need to extend your OSHC (for example, if you fail some units and need to extend your stay in Australia to complete your course), it is your responsibility to do this directly with the OSHC provider. Additional fees will be charged at time of renewal.
Exceptions apply to Norwegian students insured under the Norwegian National Insurance Scheme (NIS) and Swedish students with health insurance provided by CSN International (the Swedish National Board of Student Aid). Please include evidence with your application if you are covered under one of these programs.
Visit www.swinburne.edu.au/study/international/offer/overseas-student-health-cover
Students with families
If you plan to bring your family to Australia, check if any restrictions apply by contacting the Department of Immigration and Border Protection or the Australian diplomatic mission in your country. You will also need to hold OSHC membership for your family.
Visit www.swinburne.edu.au/study/international/plan-arrival/family
Children
If you have children between five and 15 years of age who you plan to bring to Australia, you must enrol them in school. Full fees are payable at both government and non-government schools.
Visit www.education.vic.gov.au to find a complete list of Victorian primary and secondary schools. Information about fees, applications and enrolment for government, primary and secondary schools may be found online at www.study.vic.gov.au
Applications to non-government schools must be made directly to the school of your choice.
Note: Your student visa assessment criteria may change if your family is accompanying you to Australia.
Your rights and responsibilities
The Education Services for Overseas Students (ESOS) Act regulates the education and training sector’s involvement with overseas students studying in Australia on student visas.
Visit www.studyinaustralia.gov.au/global for more information.
Restrictions may apply if you wish to change your enrolment. Visit www.swinburne.edu.au/how-to-enrol for enrolment help and support.
Visit www.swinburne.edu.au/international-refunds to read Swinburne’s refund provisions, which are outlined in the offer acceptance form.
Applying for credit transfer
What is credit transfer?Credit transfer is exemption from certain course requirements in recognition for previous study and/or experience. The term ‘credit’ is used interchangeably with ‘Recognition of Prior Learning’, ‘advanced standing’ and/or ‘status’ in Australian universities.
How to apply for credit transferYou can apply for credit transfer by submitting a course or unit (subject) syllabus or other evidence of your skills with your application. You must also indicate on your application form that you are applying for credit transfer.
If you are applying for credit transfer for a design course, you may need to submit a portfolio.
If your application for credit transfer is successful, your letter of offer will state the updated course duration and the amount of credit for which you have been assessed. If you do not apply for credit transfer when you submit your application, you can do so within the first week of commencing your course. Applications for credit transfer made after this time may not be approved.
Applying for your student visa
You will need to obtain an Overseas Student Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) from Swinburne to complete your student visa application. Your CoE must accompany your application.
Visit www.border.gov.au for more information.
Students under 18
If you are under 18 years of age, your parents must nominate a guardian who lives in Australia before you can be considered for a student visa. Your guardian must be over 21 years old, related to you and of good character.
If you do not have an appropriate guardian with whom you may live in Australia, you will need to engage a Swinburne-approved care provider. This arrangement will include accommodation restrictions and places may be limited depending on the availability of suitable accommodation options.
Note: Some courses are not available to students who are under 18 years of age.
