Sydney
WHEN THE SUN SHINES, WHICH IT OFTEN DOES, THE EMERALD CITY IN THIS LAND OF OZ IS NOTHING SHORT OF STUNNING.
Beautiful white beaches, brilliant blue
skies and shimmering bodies of water
make this one of the most naturally
gorgeous parts of the country. Add to
that fabulous food, shopping, nightlife
and a host of outdoor activities, and
you’ve got a city that quite simply
does it better than almost anywhere
else in the world.

• There’s really no bad time to visit.
Dec-Jan is summery, hot n’ happening;
Feb can be moist; Mar-May is clear and
blissful; Jul- Aug gets chilly, but the
skies are ever so blue.
• Sydney Airport to city by cab: 30
mins / AUD60 + toll.
• Trains and buses are OK, cars are
handy for longer trips and taxis
are best for zapping around, but
you may find you’ve been in town
longer than the driver.
• Make sure you specify the suburb as
well as the street to your driver, or
you’ll be all over the city.
• Major events: Sydney Festival in
Jan; Tropfest short film festival
last Sunday in Feb; Sydney Gay
& Lesbian Mardi Gras in Feb/Mar;
Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race Dec
26th; the fabulous annual New
Year’s Eve fireworks – BOOM!.
Blah blah• Sydney is all about the glorious
outdoors, but in summer don’t use
sunscreen, use sunBLOCK.
• Sydney is prone to drought, so
please be water aware.
• Book everything way ahead in
peak summer season, when many
restaurants also close for holidays.
• That said, you can’t book at
many popular restaurants, and
many will only seat you once the
whole party arrives.
• Goods and service tax (GST) is 10%,
tip an extra 10%.
• All indoor restaurants and bars are
non-smoking.
• Many shops and establishments add
a credit card surcharge.
• Drinking age is 18, carry photo ID for
venue entry.
• Beer – a schooner is 425ml, a middy
is for the wife.
• Swimming can be treacherous, so
choose a beach to suit your ability
and stay between the flags.
• Thongs are acceptable daywear
– they’re the Aussie name for flip-
flops. For night, smart/casual is best,
this includes denim.
• Country code is +61 and 2 for Sydney.
• Emergency number is 000 for
ambulance, fire and police.

Originally from Melbourne and now based
in Sydney, Maurice Terzini, has created
some of Australia’s most successful cafés,
bars and restaurants. Terzini set out to
fulfill his dream of showcasing Bondi
Beach with the opening of Icebergs Dining
Room and Bar in 2002, followed by North
Bondi Italian Food in 2006. He and his
partner Robert Marchetti also opened
Giuseppe Arnaldo & Sons at Melbourne’s
Crown Casino in 2008 as well as Neild
Avenue in Sydney’s Rushcutters Bay in
2011. Terzini has created his own clothing
label, Ten Pieces, sold exclusively at

1) WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT SYDNEY AND WHY?
As predictable as it sounds, the variety
of surf beaches. We have the cleanest
inner-city beaches in the world.
2) WHAT ARE YOUR THREE FAVORITE RESTAURANTS IN SYDNEY AND WHY?
Porteno. It’s the best Argentinian
steak house run by rockabillies in the
world. Sean’s Panaroma for its good,
simple, almost country cooking - it’s
the only place I eat in Bondi outside
of Icebergs, and Icebergs Dining
Room and Bar, not because it’s mine,
but because it serves the best rib
in Australia, some of the best fish,
a great Italian-influenced menu and
cocktails overlooking Bondi Beach.
www.porteno.com.au
www.seanspanaroma.com.au
3) WHAT RESTAURANT OFFERS THE BEST BREAKFAST OR BRUNCH IN SYDNEY, AND WHAT DO YOU ORDER?
Bills in Darlinghurst is still the best place
to have breakfast after all these years.
You can’t go wrong with the corn fritters
or scrambled eggs.
www.bills.com.au
4) WHAT ARE YOUR THREE FAVORITE RETAIL STORES IN SYDNEY AND WHY?
Assin have the best designers in the
world that are left of field. Harrolds
Menswear, worth the effort of walking
through a shopping center for their
stock of Rick Owens and Julius,
and Kirrily Johnston, my favorite
Australian designer for edgy elegant
local fashion.
www.assin.com.au
www.harrolds.com.au
www.kirrilyjohnston.com
5) WHERE WOULD YOU GO FOR A COCKTAIL AND WHAT WOULD YOU ORDER?
I like dark bars, like Baxter in the
city, which has the best selection of
dark spirits or 10 William Street that
showcases organic wine.

Style
With its gorgeous natural scenery,
icon-laden harbor, happening dining
and drinking scene and super-chic
shops, Sydney is snapping at sister
city Melbourne’s heels in the Aussie
style stakes, which means all the more
hotspots for you to enjoy. Whether you
like it neutral and calm or dark and

your taste. Begin your Sydney assault
as all fashionistas should, with a spot of
shopping in hip Surry Hills. Be sure to
check out the candy-striped fabrics and
pre-loved furniture of standout store Ici Et
La (see LUXE Loves), plus all the other art
and décor fabulousness that Crown Street
has to offer. Stop for a light lunch on
the long communal tables of timberclad
sushi house Toko before continuing your
shop-fest on Paddington’s William Street,
with heavyweights Belinda, The Corner
Store and Jac+Jack just a few of the
names to note. Celebrity tress-snipper
Renya Xydis’s hair haven Valonz is just
one street over on Elizabeth, so why not
pitstop there for a pre-evening pamper
session, or stay on William Street for
deluxe mani/pedis and precision brow
and lash tinting at little sister Miss Frou

fierce, it’s time to rub shoulders with the
city’s style set over sunset cocktails at
ultraglamorous Bondi Beach spot Icebergs

stroll away is delicious beachside diner
North Bondi Italian Food. The spaghetti
‘arrabbiata’ cooked with crab in a paper

prepared to relax with a cocktail while you
wait to be seated. Take a taxi back tothe
