    Overview

The Syllabus Build Tool (SBT) manages all teaching syllabi for Central Michigan University’s Global Campus courses. The SBT is designed to ensure alignment with CMU’s Master Course Syllabi, provide a structure for communicating all necessary course components, collect and retain all syllabi in one centralized system, and consistently communicate both academic expectations and support services to students. The SBT was originally developed in 2003 and revised in 2012.

Entering the System: The Faculty Assignments Page Global Campus faculty access the SBT https://miscel2.cel.cmich.edu/sbt/. You will log in with your global id and password. You will be directed to your customized entry page, which lists all courses considered “active”. This will include courses you are currently teaching, courses you are schedule to teach in upcoming terms, and past courses for which you did not complete the SBT process. If you would like to view completed courses, select “View All” in the upper left corner of the page. Please note that courses completed in the original SBT system are not listed.

The SBT encompasses three interconnected functions: book orders, equipment requests (face-to-face courses only), and syllabi. Each function moves through the following steps: Not Started = You have not yet accessed this SBT component. In Progress = You have begun work on this course aspect. Submitted = You have completed this component and submitted for review/acceptance. Accepted = Global Campus staff have reviewed your request and it is accepted. Denied = Global Campus staff have questions or concerns with your request and it is not accepted. You will receive an email with the reason for denial. Posted = Your course syllabus has been posted to the appropriate CMU web sites for student access.

Accessing Your Course To enter the SBT process for your course, select the EPN. If this is your first access to the course, you will be brought to the Book Order page. If you are returning, the system will take you to whichever section requires your action.

Once you enter the course, you will find the course details outlined at the top of every SBT page. Each section of the SBT course process is identified by tabs (Books, Equipment, Syllabus). As you move through the various sections, you will see the status indicators change in your course details box.

    Step-By-Step: Moving Through SBT

The Book Order Page: Textbooks, Course Reserves and Other Materials

    Books

•The book order must be completed first.

    Equipment

•This step is skipped for online courses.

    Syllabus

    • Your syllabus builds on books/equipment, so it comes last.

The first box within the Book Order Page is for entering required and/or recommended books.

Once you enter all required information on your textbook, you will save it to the Book List (1). Note you must select Yes/No if the text is required. Failure to click the required text box appropriately could result in the book order being declined by the center and/or confusion for students. The middle box is for identifying whether or not you will use Course Reserves. If you select

“yes”, the hyperlink to the Course Reserves order form is displayed (2). If you indicate you will use Course Reserves, you will also receive an email with the order form hyperlink. The third box is for additional materials that you want and/or need your students to have – for

instance, webcams, graphing calculators, journal/newspaper subscriptions (3).

If you have one or more pre-defined textbooks for your course, these will automatically be listed in the Book List at the bottom of the page. You may “select” each book and review its details.

NOTE: Once you have reviewed the pre-defined textbooks and added any additional course materials, you will need to “Save and Submit” before continuing in SBT.

The Book Page: Copy from Previous Book Order If you have previously taught a particular course and would like to use the same textbook(s), you may select “Copy from Previous Book Order” at the bottom of the page.

Selecting this option will bring up your past sections of this course. You will select which course you want to copy from and click “Next”. This action will bring up all textbooks used for your previous section and you may choose any or all. Click “Copy” to complete this step.

Once you copy a textbook, it will be added to your Book List.

Choosing the “Select” link will bring up the textbook details.

Be sure to review your selection before clicking “Save and Submit”.

The Equipment Page: Face-to-Face Courses Only This page is where you will indicate any specific equipment you will need or would like for your face-to-face course. The SBT process for online courses will skip this page. The “Equipment Type” drop-down menu will show what is typically available for special request at Global Campus centers. You may enter additional requests in the “Other” field. Please be sure to identify the dates for which you need this equipment, the quantity (if applicable) and any additional information Global Campus staff need to know. There are two areas for special mention on this page:

If you do not need/want specific equipment for your course, you may “Opt Out” at the

bottom of the page. You must enter equipment or “opt out” in order to progress

through the system (click “Save and Submit”). (1)

If the equipment you request is critical to your course plan and will be mentioned on

your syllabus, please be sure to check the box for “This equipment is critical to course

delivery”. This will notify the staff that, in order to avoid confusion, your syllabus should

not be posted for student access until availability of the equipment is confirmed. (2)

The Equipment Page: Copy from Previous Order It is possible to copy from a previous equipment order, by selecting the appropriate button on the bottom of the page. The steps are the same as for the Copy Book Order function, so please refer to the directions on Page 5 of this guide.

Building Your Syllabus within SBT The syllabus build function of the SBT system uses tabbed navigation. Once you enter the Syllabus component, the various sections of our syllabus layout will be displayed on separate tabs.

At the bottom of every section, you will have the following options:

Course Info The Course Info tab includes the Course Description, Course Prerequisites (if applicable) and Course Goals and Objectives. This information is automatically imported from the Master Course Syllabus. To access the full Master Course Syllabus for your course, visit https://centrallink.cmich.edu/services/faculty_services/AcademicSenate/Pages/master_course_syllabi.aspx.

Instructor The instructor information page includes a few changes from the former SBT fields. In the new system, you are asked to enter a “primary” phone number, rather than specifically indicate a home/work/cell phone. In addition, only your CMU email address will be provided to students. Finally, to encompass the variety of ways in which you meet with your students, we changed “Office Hours” to “Availability”.

Methodology and Bibliography Of note on the Methodology tab is the message and hyperlink regarding Blackboard (Bb), the CMU Learning Management System. All course syllabi will have a message to students regarding how to access Blackboard. If you are teaching face-to-face, you are not required to use Blackboard. It is, however, strongly encouraged (1). In addition, you will enter your Bibliography on this page (2).

Assignments The Assignments section is divided into the following fields: Pre-Class Assignment, Course Outline, Assignments and Due Dates, Post-Class Assignment, and Student Involvement Hours.

As you address each field, be sure to read the information hover-over to consider how to best communicate your course plan.

Evaluation The Evaluation section includes the following fields: Evaluation Criteria, Grading Scale, Late

Assignments and Make-ups/Rewrites. Again, read the information hover-overs to help you communicate your evaluation approach and policies.

Expectations In an effort to better address course expectations, we made this a separate section within the SBT structure. In addition to the information you provide regarding your expectations for attendance/participation/involvement, and how this relates to grading, this section will also include the University expectations regarding academic integrity and student conduct.

    9

Support The Support section includes information on Global Campus Library Services (GCLS) support, the CMU Writing Center, and Student Disability Services. This information is automatically included on the SBT page and in your final syllabus.

Copying from Previous Syllabi It is possible to copy from a previous syllabus, by selecting the appropriate button on the bottom of the page. The basic steps are the same as for the Copy Book Order function, so please refer to the directions on Page 5 of this guide. However, in the case of the syllabus, you will have the option of copying in all or individual components of your previous syllabus. After you complete the copy, you will need to review the content and ensure it fits well for your upcoming course.

Submitting Your Syllabus The button to “Submit Syllabus” is available on the bottom of every page. If you have missed a required component of the syllabus, you will be prompted to return to that section before submitting.

Staff Review and Posting Once you have submitted your syllabus, the appropriate Global Campus staff member is notified. Typically, this will be your CMU Online Coordinator or the Program Administrator at your F2F center. They will conduct a basic review to ensure correct information is listed and dates are aligned. Also, we ask the staff to review for clarity and to contact you if there are any possible points of confusion. If the staff member has any questions or concerns regarding your syllabus, they will contact you. In some cases, this may be through “denying” the syllabus, which opens it back up to you for updates, additions, or corrections. After final review is complete, the staff member will “accept” your syllabus. The accept function will then automatically post your syllabus for student access in a couple different locations. Editing/Deleting Book/Equipment List Once you have entered information to the Book List (or Equipment List), to edit or delete

an item you must 1) Choosing the “Select” link will bring up the textbook details, to be edited

    (or deleted).

Once the book in question appears in the edit box, make the appropriate changes. 2)

After changes are made, “Save Book to the List” again (or delete book from list).

    3) Once all edits/deletions are made to the list you will then need to “Save and Submit” at

    the bottom of the page.

Follow the same process for editing/deleting equipment requests.

Posting In Blackboard and Other Locations Along with the new SBT system, we have created a simpler way for you to connect to your syllabus from Blackboard, personal web sites, and other locations. To link to your CMU Global Campus syllabus, use the following URL, replacing “MYEPNHERE” with your specific course EPN. The EPN is your eight-digit course number, as listed on your contract.

Please note: be sure you test the link, once you have it established and posted. A one-digit change in the EPN may create a link to another course syllabus – so review it carefully to prevent any confusion.
