For children with no home, life is a fast train to nowhere.Salaam Baalak Trust works to restore them to the world of childhood and take them from a lonely dead end to bonding, learning and the joy of a better life.

Salaam Baalak Trust

Since its inception in 1988, after the success of Mira Nair’s film ‘Salaam Bombay’, Delhi-based Salaam Baalak Trust has been dedicated to the care and protection of neglected, street children, regardless of caste, creed or religion.

Reaching out.....beyond boundaries....• Nine contact points (for identification, outreach and day care activities)

•Five 24 hour shelter homes (boys-3, girls-2)

•Child Line (24x7 emergency helpline-1098)

•City Walk Programme guided by former street children to share their experiences weaved around the by lanes of Delhi. (The programme was conceptualized and initiated by a volunteer from UK- John Thompson)

•Volunteers Programme- national and international volunteers help SBT children in various ways

SBT's Major Focus Areas:•Safe and secure shelter and nutrition

•Education (NFE, formal schooling, special education, distance education, higher education and professional education)

•Health support -regular checkups, treatment, vaccination etc.

•Mental health support, counselling & life skills education

• Skill development and vocational education

• Sports & Recreation and co curricular activities like theatre, music, dance, painting, photography etc.

• HIV/ AIDS prevention- awareness and support programme

•Job placements and rehabilitation

•Repatriation and restoration to the families

•Sensitization and advocacy on child rights

ProgrammesHealth

Regular medical check-ups are arranged Primary health services and vaccinations are provided at each of the Trust’s homes

A regular OPD is run through Health Post at GRP.The trust focuses on

Drug De-Addiction and HIV Care, Support and Prevention program

Mental Health• A strong mental health programme focuses on the emotional health of children

• SBT staff is trained to improve their counselling skills, enabling them to identify cases through trained counsellors, expert psychologists and psychiatrist.

Annual play•It is a high point every year, around 1500 children and adults attend the annual play

An Annual excursion during the summer break is

organized every year to a tourist destination.

This enables children to:

• Learn about their environment and

• Participate in sports, art and drama competitions

Award ProjectThe Duke of Edinburgh Award Programme, normally for private institutes, was introduced to SBT (first time to any NGO) in 1999 and is called the “Salaam Award program”. This award was introduced in other NGOs in 2004. Now its called the “Special Award program”.Three levels of the award: bronze, silver and gold are given. The curriculum includes Social service, mental skills and Physical Activities. SBT has so far received 61 Gold, 65 Silver and 178 Bronze medals.

• Faizal acted in the film “ Road – the Movie”• with Abhay Deol.

•Kapil and Pankaj became theatre director of SBT, Pankaj directed the annual play of SBT in 2010

•Sunil completed his post graduation and is working with Teamwork films, an international events management Company.

• Noormani acted in the films “The Warrior” and “Company”. He has worked on the script of the upcoming Movie “Sudra-the untouchable” in which he is the Action Director too.

• Shahadutt has been selected for the Business Management in United States with scholarship from US Embassy.

• Amit and Vijay Manjunath are currently doing Engineering from Veltech University, Chennai

• Saleem performed lead role in the film “Little Terrorist”- the film was nominated for the Oscar Awards in 2006

• Ashok Pandit is doing his Hotel Management from Guwahati

• Shamshool received training as a puppeteer and is now placed at Meditech, earning more than70,000 INR per month

•Vicky, a trained photographer was selected to photograph the rebuilding of the World Trade Center. He has also been invited to received an award from the Duke of Edinburg Award project in UK from Prince HRH The Earl of  Wessex KG KCVO

•Haran trained in photography at SBT, is a successful free lance photography professional

•Ramesh trained in designing jute products and now exports his products to various countries. He also supports a small group of street children through NGO Lakshya- Badte Kadam

•Sonia successfully completed her internship in Fashion Designing with one of India’s premier designer, Ritu Kumar

• Manju completed

her six month training in House Keeping at Taj Palace Hotel and is working with Surya Crown Plaza, New Delhi

• Brijesh got a scholarship to pursue a Diploma in Tourism in USA.

•Pawan, Samim, Kumari, Viraj & Raju are working with Ishara Puppetry Group under the guidance of famous puppeteer Padmashree Dadi Padamji.

•Avinash, who dreamt of becoming Chou dancer- has performed and taught this dance in many countries of the world

•Childline succeeded in rescuing a domestic labor and restoring her back to her family in Jharkhand.

•Santosh, Shravan, Durgesh, Pramod, Amarjeet, Resham, & Pooja Lakshmi were part of the SBT family who have chosen to work with SBT itself and are our best ambassadors on the street

SPORTS achievement this year…

•Children participated in the Commonwealth Games organized by Butterflies where SBT boys won 4 gold, 7 silver and 7 bronze awards among 23 teams

• One boy has been selected by Sastri Football Club, to play for them

•One boy has been selected to represent Delhi in the Ball Badminton game

•Two boys selected for Super Seven National Cricket tournament at Haryana

organized between SBT boys and people from Scandia International from UK where SBT boys won the match

• Children participated in Concern India Foundation Sports day at Sri Ram School where SBT won 3 gold and 1 silver medal

City Walk City Walk is a guided walk through the by lanes around New Delhi railway station conducted by former street children who share their personal experiences.

The walk is popular with school children, corporate, students and tourists from all over the world.

Visit and help spread the word about City Walk with your friends and colleagues.

HOPE, New York in 2002• Delhi State Award for the best work done in the

Field of Child Welfare in 2003• “Chirayushya Samman” (Award for Elderly people

who spent their whole life in Social Service) an award co-organized by the National Institute of Social Defense (NISD) and ANUGRAHA conferred by Smt. Meira Kumar, Hon’ble Minister for Social Justice & Empowerment in recognition of work done by SBT in 2004

• UNAIDS Civil Society Award in recognition of outstanding commitment and support to the national fight against HIV and AIDS on the occasion of World Aids Day 2006
