17. Symbiosis-

A relationship in which two species exist together and at least one of the species benefits from the interaction

There are three types of symbiotic relationships: mutualism, commensalism and parasitism

TREE MAP OF SYMBIOTIC RELATIONSHIPS:

MUTUALISM-both benefit

COM MENSALISM-one benefits, one unaffected

PARASIT ISM-one benefits, one harm ed

18. MUTUALISM- A relationship between

organisms in which both species benefit from the interaction

Occurs in animals of different species

Key words: both benefit

Page 5: SYMBIOTIC RELATIONSHIPS WORDS 17-22 Symbiosis Mutualism Commensalism Parasitism Parasite Host

EXAMPLE OF MUTUALISM: A sea anemone and a

clown fish The sea anemone

benefits because the clown fish attracts other fish and the clown fish benefits because it gets protection

19. COMMENSALISM-

A relationship between organisms in which one species benefits and the other species neither benefits nor is harmed by the interaction

Key words: one benefits, one unaffected

Page 7: SYMBIOTIC RELATIONSHIPS WORDS 17-22 Symbiosis Mutualism Commensalism Parasitism Parasite Host

EXAMPLE OF COMMENSALISM: A shark and a remora The remora benefits

because it gets pieces of leftover food and the shark is unaffected

Page 8: SYMBIOTIC RELATIONSHIPS WORDS 17-22 Symbiosis Mutualism Commensalism Parasitism Parasite Host

20. PARASITISM- A relationship between

organisms in which one species benefits and the other is harmed by the interaction

Key words: one benefits, one is harmed

Page 9: SYMBIOTIC RELATIONSHIPS WORDS 17-22 Symbiosis Mutualism Commensalism Parasitism Parasite Host

MORE EXAMPLES OF PARASITISM: A human with lice The lice benefits

because it gets food and a place to live on the human. The human is harmed

A cat and roundworm is another example. Who benefits? Who’s harmed?

21. PARASITE- An organism that lives

off the energy of other living things

The “bad guy” in parasitism

The flea is a parasite

Page 11: SYMBIOTIC RELATIONSHIPS WORDS 17-22 Symbiosis Mutualism Commensalism Parasitism Parasite Host

MORE EXAMPLES OF A PARASITE: The roundworm is a

parasite in the example of a cat and a roundworm

Lice is the parasite in the human and lice example of parasitism

22. HOST-

An organism that a parasite lives in or gets nourishment from

The “good guy” in the examples of parasitism

EXAMPLES OF HOSTS: The human in the
