SUNDAY MASS READINGS Joshua 5:9a, 10-12 Psalm 34 2 Corinthians 5:17-21

Luke 15:1-3, 11-32

T oday’s Gospel story of the prodigal son is a favorite of many. We can identify with all the

major figures and their crisscross of emotions. The father’s initial grief over his young son’s avarice is turned to relief at his return. The son’s grief over his loss of fortune, family, and friends is turned to delirious joy at the sight of his father. We understand the eldest son’s bewilderment over his father’s generosity. For the older son, virtue seems not to be its own reward. For all his honorable toil and loyalty, there seems to be no celebration. The father, however, is prodigal in his forgiveness and mercy. He expects the same generosity from his older son. He wants all to rejoice when the lost one is found. This is a Sunday for rejoicing. It’s time to pause, consider, and encourage one another. We are the prodigal children heading home. We are the elder siblings waiting with the eager Father, who scans the horizon. In Christ Jesus we are reconciled to the Father and one another. In his death and resurrection we have passed over. We are a new creation. In this we rejoice. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

ORGAN PRELUDE Meditation, Maurice Duruflé (1902-1986)

Durufle was one of the most noted organist, composers, and performers of the 20th Century. From 1930 until his death in 1986 he was the organist at one of the most prestigious churches in Paris, St. Stephen’s on the Mount. Meditation was written in 1964 and published in 2001, 15 years after his death. Because of its mystical beauty, it has been sought out and performed by many organists world-wide.

FAMILY LIFE MEDITATION FOR LENT

P ope Francis said, in his message to participants in the 47th Social Week of Italian Catholics: For the Christian community the family is far more than a “theme:” It is life; it is the daily fabric of life; it is the journey of generations

who pass on the faith together with love and with the basic moral values. It is concrete solidarity, effort, patience, and also a project, hope, a future. All this, which the Christian community lives out in the light of faith, hope, and charity, should never be kept to oneself but must become, every day, the leaven in the dough of the whole of society for its greater common good.

Hope and a future presuppose memory. The memory of our elderly people sustain us as we journey on. The future of society is rooted in the elderly and in the young — the latter, because they have the strength and are of the age to carry history ahead; the former, because they are a living memory. A people that does not take care of its elderly, its children and its youth has no future because it abuses both memory and promise.

Within your family, share your thoughts around these questions: 1. Who is one person in our family whose faith shaped my own? What strengths does each member of our family have? 2. What are some ways our family tries to live our belief in God and his Church? Which virtue seems to be particularly

strong in our family — faith, hope, or charity? 3. Why is keeping alive the memory of our history, our family roots, important to shaping the future? Excerpted from “Building the Domestic Church The Family Fully Alive” by the Knights of Columbus, 1 Columbus Plaza New Haven, CT.

TENEBRAE LITURGY MARCH 22, 7PM

All are welcome to attend a Tenebrae Liturgy at Sacred Heart on the Tuesday of Holy Week. The term “Tenebrae” is Latin for shadows. It is a service of scripture readings traditionally prayed during Holy week, and is characterized by a gradual darkening of the church as candles are extinguished at three points throughout the service. The assembly participates, reading the psalms in parts, much as monks and cloistered nuns do when praying the Liturgy of the Hours.

Gracias a Dios, ¡somos cristianos!
