Synthesis is the manner in which instruments are imitated by synthesizers, and timbre is defined. It is the process of defining the differences in timbre between instruments, as well as the beginnings and endings of musical notes themselves.A producer who fully understands synthesis and timbre should be able to both create sounds and describe them. Being able to define sounds aids producers in memorizing them, as well as in creating them. Since synthesizers are commonly used in modern musical productions to create recordings from sampled instruments, being able to understand and participate in synthesis is vital for producers.MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) data is the music production standard format for synthesized samples. Working with MIDI data means altering the sound qualities of MIDI recordings, as well as browsing through synthesized samples to discover ones that can be appropriately applied to recordings. The first step to finding such sounds, or perhaps creating them, is to understand the five most commonly applied modules of synthesis and how they are related to each other. Associations between such modules are referred to as modular synthesis. The five most important modules of synthesis are:The oscillator. The filter. The amplifier. The LFO (Low-Frequency Oscillation.)The envelope.
