NEWSLETTER6 DECEMBER 2019 | VOLUME 43 NO. 39 TERM 4 - WEEK 8 - 2019
From the Principal | Mr Damien Carlton
Year 10 Activity Week and Work Experience: Over the last two weeks Year 10 were involved in a variety of work placements, community service and personal skill development activities. Students undertook various activities at a multitude of work places in and around the city and the shire. It was highly successful and I thank Mrs Sullivan and Mrs Cutcliffe (Careers Coordinators) for the inspiration and organisation of the week. Additionally, this week students were involved in a lot of activity options. On offer were First Aid, Robotics, Yoga, Makeup application, Lawn Bowls, Engadine Pool, Oak Park Swim, Multi-sports, Bosco Primary School visit, Barn Dancing, Mock Interviews, Fitness and Social Decorations to name a few. Students also visited the Palms Nursing Home at Kirrawee, and entertained the elderly at St Vincent's Care Services with Christmas Carols. In all, a very full and active week with plenty of useful experiences. Much gratitude and thanks go to the Year 10 Coordinator, Mr Ben Tickle, for his organisation and design of the week and great thanks are extended to all the staff who led activities or supported the students. Great stuff! Well done to all.
St Vincent de Paul Christmas & Catholic Care Appeal: A reminder that each year the students / families of the College are asked to support the outstanding community work of our local parish St Vincent de Paul Society and Catholic Care. There are many families in our local area who are struggling to make the basic ends meet. Often they are not very apparent but they are there. This year we are again personalising the donations to support specific Engadine families. The Christmas Hamper Appeal supported by the College each year goes a long way to meeting immediate needs of families at this time of the year. So I hope all get behind the appeal. Last chance to fill the hampers and cash donations is on Wednesday 11 December! Please refer to page 5 of this Newsletter for more information.
Reminder to Parents: Would all families please urgently return the Verification form for 2020 (cream coloured) to the College Office. Whether you have changed details or not, all forms must be returned. Additionally, I again remind some families who have not settled their school fee accounts for 2019. I ask that if you have not done this would you please attend to it well before the end of this term. Any issues or queries surrounding fees should be directed to the College Business Manager, Mr Vince McDonall.
The Spirit of AdventAdvent is marked by a spirit of expectation, of anticipation, of preparation, of longing. There is a yearning for deliverance from the evils of the world, first expressed by Israelite slaves in Egypt as they cried out from their bitter oppression. It is that hope, however faint at times, and that God, however distant He sometimes seems, which brings to the world the anticipation of a King who will rule with truth and justice and righteousness over His people and in His creation. It is that hope that once anticipated, and now anticipates anew, the reign of an Anointed One, a Messiah, who will bring peace and justice and righteousness to the world.

ASSESSMENT DATES FOR TERM 4
WEEK 9, 9 DECEMBER - 13 DECEMBER
The following assessments are due in the upcoming week:
Artist Workshop | Miss Allyse Miskle
On Wednesday 2 December Year 11 Visual Arts students along with some Year 10 elective students were invited to participate in a workshop run by talented local artist Kirsty Godwin. The full day workshop gave students an insight into the world of a practising artist and gain an understanding of Australian Art culture. Students developed their skills and knowledge and for Year 11 students it was a valuable experience that will assist them in developing their HSC Body of Work.
Over the course of the day students created a still life acrylic painting that focused on developing their painting techniques whilst incorporating personal style. After explaining her method, Kirsty directed students in how best to lay a foundation for a successful artwork by sketching and then blocking in objects with a base colour. All students took to the task eagerly and produced wonderful artworks that demonstrated their gained knowledge and skills.
Thank you to all of those who took part in the workshop; your enthusiasm was infectious and created such a positive and creative atmosphere.

St John Bosco College 2019 Christmas Hamper Appeal
We have two options for pastoral classes:
One of these is collecting items to suit a given family profile. These are specific to the Engadine area and allow for a very personal experience, with a focus on Social Justice as one of the core elements of our Christian faith. We would like to thank all of the Pastoral classes that are taking up this opportunity, as the family profiles show how all of our efforts of giving have real impact.
The second option is our Catholic Care initiative. This option is for those classes who are excellent at raising money and want some ideas about how that money is helping people in need. For example, $150 buys a fresh hamper filled with wholesome goodies plus counselling care and support for a family in distress. In your classes, you will have a box and we encourage you to bring in as much
money as you can to help those struggling around this time of the year. With this money, classes can then decide which package, or multiple packages, you would like to choose based on the amount you have raised. For example, a class with $100 may wish to choose 2 of the $50 hampers or 4 of the $25 hampers. This option then gets sent to Catholic Care via your class’s specific envelope.
This year our Social Justice Leaders, Sophie Fitzgerald and Sean Maunder, will be participating in the organisation and packing of these Hampers at Harris Farm.
So we encourage you to get behind this Christmas hamper appeal and be generous in your giving. Also remember that the time of Christmas is about much more than presents.
This year the College will again be supporting the St Vincent de Paul Society and Catholic Care in their annual Christmas Hamper Appeal

6 TERM 4 - WEEK 8 GAUDIUM ET SPES | JOY & HOPE | A school that prepares for life
YEAR 10This year in our Year 10 Industrial Technology – Timber Products Course, the classes have been designing and building bedside tables. They have used a range of hand and machine tools including the mortising machine to cut their joints and construct their frames. The students used dovetail, housing, mortise and tenon, biscuit and domino joints in the construction of the bedside table. They were able to design their own legs, tops and drawer fronts. The students used different timbers in the design of their table tops. These are some of the fantastic bedside tables. Well done Year 10!
YEAR 9This semester in Year 9 Industrial Technology – Timber Products, the students have been creating tea light stands. They have used hand and machine tools including the laser cutter to cut their designs. The students tapered the legs and joined them to the stand with housing joints. These are some of the fantastic tea light stands.
Additionally, the classes have been learning lathe turning. They turned some fantastic paper towel holders. These will make a wonderful Christmas present. Well done Year 9!

WHERE WORDS COME FROMEtymology is the study of the origin of words and the way in which their meanings have changed throughout history.
Words in the English language have a variety of origins. Some examples include:
• feminine comes from the Latin femina (woman)
• rosella comes from the early farming area Rosehill in New South Wales
• alarm comes from old French and Italian all’arme (to arms)
• kindergarten comes from the German kinder (children) and garten (garden).
Etymology is useful because understanding where words come from can help you to understand unfamiliar words and to spell difficult ones.

Religion - 7 Banksia
On Tuesday of week 8, our class 7 Banksia celebrated at a mass in the Chapel lead by Fr Peter. The mass included topics we had learnt in RE, a key focus on holiness and we also celebrated the patron saint of missionaries Saint Francis Xavier. I believe it was a truly magnificent and spiritual event. From the words of all of 7BK the mass had very thoughtful readings and the responses were given with enthusiasm. Everyone worked together as a team to organise the mass with each student having a specific job to do and this was what made it so meaningful to us.
We felt proud that Father Peter spoke so highly about our preparation for the mass and he was able to connect the homily to the posters that some students in the class created which all were related to the topics we learnt about through the year of 2019, such as Ways of Praying, Stewardship, What it means to be Catholic. We hope to be able to do this again in future RE classes.
