COVID-19 has definitely left a mark on all of our lives in one way or another. Given all the unpredictability and challenges, we still managed to have had significant achievement across all aspects of College life. We have seen wonderful academic, sporting and community achievements. Meanwhile, our senior student leadership team, led by College Captains Emily Watson and Joshua Doyle, were outstanding in all their endeavours. There has been greater interaction with parents (including via zoom) and parishes that service the College. The work of Fr Peter as College Chaplain has been absolutely fantastic. At this point, I would like to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of the teaching and support staff of Bosco College. Their care and concern are very evident, and we are indeed very lucky to have such a committed staff. I am especially thankful to those teachers who persevered in difficult times and am forever grateful to the many teachers who volunteered and undertook extra responsibilities to support the students. Their agility to undertake remote learning at short notice has been a real testament to their passion for quality learning. The way they interacted with each other and their students via emails, Compass, Google calendar and Google classroom, phone and of course via Zoom shows a commitment to their craft and their students. In sum, it has been a very successful and rewarding year. I’d like to thank all the staff, students and parents for their hard work, support and enthusiasm that have been most evident this year. This is my last newsletter at Bosco as I vacate the Principal’s role after 11 years. I sign off with a great sense of satisfaction and pride that the collective work of all those involved in educating our young people in my time has been a positive and enlivening experience. I have been humbled by the gestures of thanks from both past and present members of the Bosco community. I believe I leave the College in excellent shape as the new Principal takes up the next chapter of Salesian education here in Engadine. I trust that everyone has a joyous and peaceful Christmas. I hope that we may cross each other’s paths in the future. Lastly, I know Bosco is not just a good school … it’s a GREAT SCHOOL! Thank you and goodbye.

CHRISTMAS LITURGY

4 TERM 4 - WEEK 10 GAUDIUM ET SPES | JOY & HOPE | A school that prepares for life

On Tuesday 15 December we held our annual Christmas Liturgy. This year, due to restrictions around COVID-19, we were not able to fully facilitate our two options, so after some small in-school fundraising for Vinnies (who were not able to receive our hand-packed hampers this year) we decided to do a school-wide collection for national social services organisation CatholicCare and their "Gift of Goodness” campaign. In true Team Bosco style, our wonderful students rose to the challenge, coming up with a range of COVID safe, creative ways to raise money for this very worthy cause. The theme of keeping the "Christ in Christmas" was set early in the liturgy through the showing of our amazing Christmas Appeal Launch Video and reinforced through the Year 11 drama skit - "You can't have Christmas without ..." Finally, all of our wonderful fundraising efforts were showcased as each pastoral class "deposited" their Bosco care tokens symbolising the monies raised and the hamper choices of their respective pastoral class. Total monies raised for CatholicCare this year was $4705.90! I would like to take this opportunity to thank the many staff and students who came together to make this possible. I think you will agree it really embodies our Salesian Charism by bringing together a Catholic cause, that has real ties to our local and broader community, in a playground where friends meet and definitely enjoy themselves. Christmas Blessings and thank you once again for your generosity.

Wishing you a happy and Holy Christmas from all of the Bosco Religious Education Department

Year 7 Coordinator | Mrs Maria Millward

The unit that Year 7 explored during Term 4 is called ‘Stories on Stage’. In this unit, students learnt many things such as how to write a script, stage directions and producing a play. On Thursday 10 December, Year 7 gathered in the Valdocco Centre to perform their plays for each other. This was a valuable experience that helped all members of Year 7 gain valuable stage experience.

Students from 7 Hakea went above and beyond to paint a backdrop for one of their scenes. We came in almost every lunch and recess to work on this backdrop that became 5.34m long. On it, we incorporated our art topics for this year which included ‘Creepy Creatures’ and ‘Illustration’.

“It was fun to see all of the students in each class get involved, whether they had a big part or just work behind the scenes. It was such a fun experience, and I will remember it all the way through to Year 12.” - Danny Kearney

“It was great fun painting the props and getting it all prepared. I didn't want to be on stage at first, but then I saw everyone else having a good time and ended up joining in.” - Mahni Watt

“It was a fun experience learning new things and experiencing new activities that I haven't done before- getting out of my comfort zone and going up on stage even though I was really nervous.” - Issac Dawson

“I learnt how to become more confident without getting embarrassed and have fun while learning some new acting techniques. I had heaps of fun helping to rewrite some parts of the script, helping out with props and getting ready.” - Tammi Watt

We thank Mrs Millward, Mrs Dalton and the Year 7 teachers Ms Giampietro, Mrs Pritchard and Mrs Bradley, Mrs Morris and Ms Stanley who helped us through this experience and look forward to learning more in Year 8.

Congratulations to the students who won the drama awards for best class performer and best class team player. There were many stand out performances on the day, and evidence of great teamwork across the board meant wonderful performances were enjoyed by all.

On Wednesday last week we celebrated the last meeting of the Art Club for this year with a festive flare. Concluding with the final Christmas event of making ceramic decorations, student's eagerly adorned their ornaments with paint, twine and other embellishments.

It has been wonderful to continue the Art Club traditions where students from all year groups gather in their shared interest for Visual Arts. Thank you to all who have joined us this year in our creative endeavours. We look forward to seeing you among some new faces next year as we continue to explore the art world and produce beautiful artworks.

In the last weeks of term, 7BK History became high priests of the embalming and mummification process of the fallen Apple Pharaoh. The class prepared the sarcophagus, the natron solution to embalm the Apple Pharaoh as well as creating amulets, a cartouche and canopic jars to ensure that their Apple Pharaoh would be reborn in the orchard afterlife. Here are some photos of their activities in History.
