Why it is so important to tell the truth

As parents, we teach our children that the truth is important. In fact, the truth is a critical part of the healing process for victim-survivors of abuse. When a victim-survivor tells the truth about abuse that has happened to him or her, it robs the secret of its power and begins to break down any fear surrounding it. This helps a victim-survivor on the path to being free from the effects of abuse and enables the church and other institutions to take appropriate action to keep others safe. The Baptism of The Lord

THE WATERS OF BAPTISM When new sod is put in, it needs constant saturation with water. Landscapers say that this “knits” the sod to the soil. The same when a branch is grafted onto a tree: the poultice that joins them at the splice must be kept wet at all times. Water is the stuff that binds the very cells of our bodies together. No wonder religions throughout all times and cultures have used it so prominently. When Jesus stepped into the Jordan for baptism, he “knit” himself to what had come before him. By going to the Jordan, he made himself one with the people of Israel who had crossed it into their Promised Land. With John the Baptist, Christ wove himself into the prophetic t radition that heralded the coming reign of God. He had become fully human in the waters of Mary’s womb, and by partaking in the rite of the baptism of repentance, Jesus identified himself with our sinful, frail humanity. It is through the waters of baptism that Christ continues to graft new members onto his Body, the Church; through these waters we are cleansed from sin and filled with the promise of grace, given our destiny for eternal life. For us, as for Jesus, it is also the waters of baptism that inaugurate our mission to proclaim the Good News.

El Bautismo del Señor

LAS AGUAS BAUTISMALES Cuando se planta un césped nuevo, debe regarse constantemente. Los jardineros dicen que esto “teje” el césped al suelo. Lo mismo sucede cuando se injerta una rama a un árbol: el cataplasma que los une debe estar húmedo en todo momento. El agua es lo que mantiene unidas a las células de nuestro cuerpo. Con razón las religiones de todas las épocas y culturas han usado tanto este símbolo. Cuando Jesús se sumerge en el Jordán para ser bautizado, se “teje” a todo aquello que lo precedía. Al sumergirse en el Jordán, se hizo uno con el pueblo de Israel que había cruzado el río para llegar a su Tierra Prometida. Junto a Juan Bautista, Cristo se tejió a la tradición profética que presagiaba la venida del Reino de Dios. Jesús se había convertido plenamente en humano en las aguas del vientre de María y al participar del rito del Bautismo del arrepentimiento, se sintió identificado con nuestra frágil y pecaminosa humanidad. Por las aguas del Bautismo Cristo continúa injertando nuevos miembros a su Cuerpo, la Iglesia; gracias a nuestro destino de vida eterna, por estas aguas somos limpiados del pecado y recibimos la promesa de la gracia. Para nosotros, como para Jesús, las aguas bautismales también inauguran nuestra misión de proclamar la Buena Nueva.

Una vez bautizado, Jesús salió del agua.

En ese momento se abrieron los Cielos y

vio al Espíritu de Dios que bajaba como

Father Joseph’s Weekly Missives “Al salir Jesús del agua, vio que los cielos se rasgaban y que el Espíritu, en figura de paloma, descendía sobre él. Se oyó entonces una voz del cielo que decía: “Tú eres mi Hijo amado; yo tengo en ti mis complacencias". (Marcos 1: 10-11)

Hoy celebramos el Bautismo del Señor. Original mente se celebró en la Epifanía, que conmemora (1) la venida de los Magos, (2) el bautismo de Cristo, (3) las bodas de Caná. Con el tiempo en Occidente, se celebró como una fiesta distinta para la primera revelación pública del Dios trino y la revelación oficial de Jesús como el Hijo de Dios. Los cuatro evangelios describen el bautismo del Señor, que marca el comienzo del ministerio público de Jesús y el final de la temporada navideña.

La Iglesia enseña que el bautismo es uno de los sacramentos de iniciación a la vida de gracia. El Sacramento del Bautismo: (1) perdona nuestro pecado y nos llena con la gracia de Dios; (2) nos hace templos del Espíritu Santo; (3) nos inicia en la muerte y resurrección de Jesucristo; (4) nos da la bienvenida al Cuerpo de Cristo, la Iglesia; (5) nos hace partícipes del ministerio del Evangelio, una vida de servicio consagrado y amor de alianza por Dios y por los demás.

Esta fiesta nos invita a reflexionar sobre nuestras propias promesas bautismales, a trabajar con el Señor para establecer el Reino de Dios en la tierra.

Dios no quiere que tengamos una relación de Transacción sino de Transformación. Por lo tanto, los discípulos cristianos dinámicos son aquellos que (1) CREEN, (2) CRECEN, (3) SIRVEN, (4) AMAN y (5) GUIAN a otros a Jesús. El tema de hoy nos invita a GUIAR a otros a Cristo para cumplir la voluntad de Dios y obtener nuestra salvación.

¿Cómo podemos recordar nuestra verdadera identidad, cumplir nuestras promesas bautismales, vivir una buena vida cristiana?

“On coming up out of the water he saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit, like a dove, descending upon him. And a voice came from the heavens, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.” (Mark 1:10-11)

Today we celebrate the Baptism of the Lord. It was originally celebrated on Epiphany, which commemorates (1) the coming of the Magi, (2) the baptism of Christ, (3) the wedding at Cana. Over time in the West, it was celebrated as a distinct feast for the first public revelation of the triune God and the official revelation of Jesus as the Son of God. All four Gospels describe the Baptism of the Lord, which marks the beginning of Jesus’ public ministry and the end of the Christmas season.

The Church teaches that baptism is one of the sacraments of initiation into the life of grace. The Sacrament of Baptism: (1) forgives our sin and fills us with God’s grace; (2) makes us temples of the Holy Spirit; (3) initiates us into the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ; (4) welcomes us into the Body of Christ, the Church; (5) makes us sharers in the ministry of the Gospel, a life of consecrated service and covenantal love for God and one another.

This feast invites us to reflect on our own baptismal promises, to work with the Lord for establishing the Kingdom of God on earth.

God does not want us holding a relationship of Transaction but Transformation. Therefore, Dynamic Christian disciples are those who (1) BELIEVE, (2) GROW, (3) SERVE, (4) LOVE and (5) LEAD others to Jesus. Today’s topic invites us to LEAD others to Christ to fulfill God’s will and obtain our salvation.

How can we remind our true identity, keep our baptismal promises, live a good Christian life?
