Trendsetters in Clothing

Like lots of Americans, workers at T-Formation gather for a
cookout to watch the Super Bowl. Except their gathering is
work-related. Once the game’s winner is known, they print
tens of thousands of shirts honoring the champ. The next day,
retailers throughout the East have the shirts.
The Mitchell family, Peter, Melanie and sons Bart and
Drew, started T-Formation in 1987, catering to Tallahassee
sororities, frats and businesses. President and partner Alan
Gentry joined in 1989.
T-Formation, located outside of Tallahassee in Midway, is the
nation’s eighth-largest screen printer, says trade publication
Impressions. The company has done work for the AFC and
NFC championships, the Super Bowl, the World Series
and NCAA championships. A major market is shirts for
non-profit walks and runs. “The business grew by sheer determination and a lot of hard work and references from existing clients,” says Drew
Mitchell. New for the 105- to 150-employee company: Shirts for Coca-Cola made from cotton and fibers spun from recycled bottles.
Gentry: His father was a test pilot who won the Harmon Trophy, which honors the world’s outstanding aviator. Chuck Yeager was a family
friend. “I’m a workaholic because my Dad ... told me in the sixth grade if I ever got another C in class again, I couldn’t play sports. I got
straight A’s for the rest of my school career. I think the discipline to do that probably gave me the habits that I have now.”
Drew and Bart: Paternal grandfather was a Greek immigrant. “As such, he instilled a tremendous work ethic in our father, who instilled it into
Bart and I. It wasn’t a question of whether we were going to work; it was only a question of how hard.” At 75, their dad is still in the gym at 5
a.m. each day. Their other grandfather was E. Harris Drew, former chief justice of the state Supreme Court.
Super Bowl XLIII: T-Formation was contracted to print only if the Steelers won, which the Steelers did. “Everyone in the company was a
Steelers fan — for that day anyway,” Gentry says.
Favorite Design: “Probably my personal favorite was a design called Seminole Republic that we created back in our early years.
It was everywhere in Tallahassee and probably helped put us on the map for collegiate wear,” Gentry says.
Seminoles: Bart, Alan and Drew all graduated from FSU. Bart and Alan met while playing on the FSU baseball team. But they’ve printed shirts
for UF’s national basketball and football championships. “Business is business ... but deep down we’re ready to see FSU get back to the top.”
