The Junior-Senior Wars

What it looks like….

They have begun. You have already begun to call me. For those of you who are veteran parents of high schoolers, you know what I am talking about. For those of you who are new to high school, let me fill you in. Remember in earlier generations when there used to be something called “rolling a house,” where one would use toilet tissue and shaving cream and decorate someone’s yard, usually

Page 5: T. L. Hanna, an IB World School · 2014. 7. 26. · T. L. Hanna, an IB World School 2600 Highway 81 North, Anderson, SC 29621 864-260-5110 7/23/14 Parent Newsletter # 2 Dressed all

someone not particularly liked? Well, the modern version of rolling a house is now called the Junior-Senior Wars, named because it originated as a clandestine battle between the Juniors and Seniors at TLH many years ago. It began with Seniors doing it to Juniors’ houses, in usually a friendly, non-destructive way that was memorable and fun. Everyone would take pictures and have a good laugh, even the parents. Today, students at TLH usually do this before school starts at the homes of friends, not people they dislike. As a matter of fact, I have known students who had their feelings hurt when their houses were not rolled. It’s the exact opposite of when I was in high school. The reason for it, so say the teens, is to welcome people back to school, welcome freshmen to high school, and sometimes – “just for the heck of it.” Most of it is all in fun, with no harm done except for tissue and shaving cream. My son’s senior year, our yard was done five nights in a row. I never heard a thing, but each morning, a quite beautiful sight of tissue hanging from every limb on every tree dancing delicately in the wind greeted me as I went out for my newspaper, and for weeks white dots decorated my lawn every time it rained. I have no doubt that my son (a Senior at the time) was as guilty as all the rest, so his job was to clean it as best as he could every morning before school. Not every parent takes it so lightly, however. Granted, some teens actually use a lot more than tissue and shaving cream and cross way over the line into sheer vandalism. So here are the warnings to the teens who participate in this annual non-school sponsored tradition: (1) Some parents do not think this is funny. They call the police and have even had students arrested for vandalism; (2) some students go too far and use eggs, spray paint, and other materials that actually do damage to property and they have to pay “restitution,” to get it fixed; and (3) sometimes it begins as innocent fun and ends up as serious when people get angry. The dangers of it are numerous. The school has no control over this activity. At the beginning of school I warn students about it, but to no avail. It takes place outside of school during non-school hours, so other than warning students about the consequences, I am at a loss as to what else I can do. Understand as well that your teens may be participating in this without your knowing it. Some parents do allow it but only at friends’ houses where they know the parents. Others don’t allow it at all. I just want to give you a heads up in case you wake up one morning to a surprise. Also, FYI, rolling the principal’s house is never a good idea . I am too old to clean it up.

Advice for Incoming Freshmen 1. High school is different than middle school. It is the end of the line for your public education. What happens in high school will dramatically affect what your options are when you graduate. Course work will get harder and attendance is imperative. The rigor must be increased each year so that you can handle college-level work. 2. Every high school student will send a transcript to colleges/universities. College seems a long way off in 9th grade, but you need to start thinking about it seriously now. The reason is simple -- your 9th grade academic and extracurricular record will be part of your college application. Low grades in 9th grade can seriously jeopardize your chances of getting into college. 3. The primary advice for 9th grade can be boiled down to this: take demanding courses, keep your grades up, and be active outside of the classroom. The list below outlines these points in more detail. 1. Take Challenging Courses Your academic record is the most important part of your college application. Colleges want to see more than good grades; they also want to see that you have pushed yourself and taken the most challenging courses offered at your school. Set yourself up so that you can take full advantage of whatever AP, IB, college-level, and upper-level courses your school offers. 2. Focus on Grades Grades matter in your freshman year. No part of your college application carries more weight than the courses you take and the grades you earn. College may seem like it's a long way off, but bad freshman grades can hurt your chances of getting into a selective college. 3. Get Help if You Need It If you find you're struggling in a subject, don't ignore the issue. You don't want your difficulties with math or a language in 9th grade to create difficulties for you later in high school. Seek out extra help and tutoring to get your skills up to snuff. Students who have always had good grades in elementary and middle school sometimes meet their match in high school course work. Even the brightest students will eventually have to study more and work harder to continue to make good grades. 4. Extracurricular Activities By 9th grade you should be focusing on a couple extracurricular activities that you're passionate about. Colleges are looking for students with varied interests and evidence of leadership potential; your involvement in activities outside of the classroom often reveal this information to the college admissions folks. 5. Visit Colleges 9th grade is still a bit early to shop around for colleges in a serious way, but it is a good time to start seeing what types of schools strike your fancy. If you happen to find yourself near a campus, take an hour to go on the campus tour. This early exploration will make it easier to come up with a short list of colleges in your junior and senior years. 6. Read a Lot This advice is important for 7th through 12th grades. The more you read, the stronger your verbal, writing and critical thinking abilities will be. Reading beyond your homework will help you do well in school, on the ACT and SAT, and in college. Whether you’re reading Sports Illustrated or War and Peace, you’ll be

improving your vocabulary, training your ear to recognize strong language, and introducing yourself to new ideas.

Powdered Caffeine Kills Athlete/Prom King Associated Press, July 19, 2014

COLUMBUS, Ohio — A few weeks before their prom king’s death, students at an Ohio high school had attended an assembly on narcotics that warned about the dangers of heroin and prescription painkillers. But it was one of the world’s most widely accepted drugs that killed Logan Stiner — a powdered form of caffeine so potent that as little as a single teaspoon can be fatal. The teen’s sudden death in May has focused attention on the unregulated powder and drawn a warning from federal health authorities urging consumers to avoid it. “I don’t think any of us really knew that this stuff was out there,” said Jay Arbaugh, superintendent of the Keystone Local Schools.

Logan Stiner, seen here at a wrestling match in Ohio, had a lethal amount of caffeine in his system when he died. The federal Food and Drug Administration said Friday that it’s investigating caffeine powder and will consider taking regulatory action. The agency cautioned parents that young people could be drawn to it. An autopsy found that Stiner had a lethal amount of caffeine in his system when he died May 27 at his home in LaGrange, Ohio, southwest of Cleveland. Stiner, a wrestler, had more than 70 micrograms of caffeine per milliliter of blood in his system, as much as 23 times the amount found in a typical coffee or soda drinker, according to the county coroner. His mother has said she was unaware her son took caffeine powder. He was just days away from graduation and had planned to study at the University of Toledo. Caffeine powder is sold as a dietary supplement, so it’s not subject to the same federal regulations as certain caffeinated foods. Users add it to drinks for a pick-me-up before workouts or to control weight gain. A minuscule amount packs a punch. A mere 1/16th of a teaspoon can contain about 200 milligrams of caffeine, roughly the equivalent of two large cups of coffee. That means a heaping teaspoon could kill, said Dr. Robert Glatter, an emergency physician at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York. “The difference between a safe amount and a lethal dose of caffeine in these powdered products is very small,” FDA spokeswoman Jennifer Dooren said. Glatter said he’s seen several younger patients experience complications from caffeine in the last few months. Some arrive with rapid heart rates.

“They’re starting to latch onto the powders more because they see it as a more potent way to lose weight,” Glatter said. Health officials worry about caffeine powder’s potential popularity among exercise enthusiasts and young people seeking an energy boost. Dr. Henry Spiller directs a poison control center at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. Over a week or so this month, the center took reports of three people hospitalized for misusing caffeine powder. “I can’t believe you can buy this,” Spiller said. “Honestly, I mean, it’s frightening. It makes no sense to me.” Federal investigations have recently prompted some companies to pull products with added caffeine. Last year, Wrigley halted sales and marketing of Alert caffeinated gum after discussions with the FDA. In 2010, the agency forced manufacturers of alcoholic caffeinated beverages to cease production of those drinks. Authorities have also pledged to take action if they are able to link deaths to consumption of energy drinks. Hospitalizations from those drinks have been on the rise. The number of emergency department visits involving energy drinks doubled — from 10,068 visits in 2007 to 20,783 visits in 2011, according to the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. Most of the cases involved teens or young adults. A full teaspoon of caffeine powder could contain 3,200 milligrams of caffeine. In that concentrated amount, a person can experience adverse effects in a matter of minutes, said Dr. Bob Hoffman, a New York University medical toxicologist. The brain becomes alert, then agitated and confused. The heartbeat picks up and can become dangerously irregular. A person can suffer nausea, vomiting and potentially a seizure. “The thing about caffeine is just because you see it every day, just because it’s naturally occurring — it comes from a plant — doesn’t mean that it’s safe,” Hoffman said. Back in Ohio, the superintendent of the district where Stiner attended school plans to take steps of his own. He wants to add the dangers of caffeine powder to drug and alcohol awareness programs.

Many Parents Pick the Wrong Cars for Their Teens by Jenny Hirsch, Los Angeles Times http://www.commercialappeal.com/news/national/many-parents-pick-the-wrong-cars-for-their-teenagers

Many teenagers are driving cars that are poorly matched to their driving skills, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The institute released its first list of recommended used vehicles for teens Wednesday after finding in a survey of 500 parents that 83 percent bought used, rather than new, cars for their teens to drive. The organization reviewed crash ratings and safety features — such as electronic stability control systems — for used cars, and then obtained price data from Kelley Blue Book to build its list. Mindful that families can have varying budgets, the group recommended cars along a broad spectrum of prices. It recommended, for instance, the Lincoln MKS from the 2009 model year, which starts at about $15,500, but also 2006 to '08 Volkswagen Passats, which start at about $5,000 on the used market. "These lists of recommended used vehicles can help consumers factor in safety in addition to affordability," said Adrian Lund, the group's president. The institute found that teens tend to drive small or subcompact cars that don't offer good crash protection, and also older cars, from the 2006 model year or earlier. That's a problem because older vehicles are less likely to have important safety features such as electronic stability control and side air bags. Teenagers killed in crashes are more likely than adults to have been driving small and older vehicles, the institute said. Among fatally injured drivers ages 15 to 17 from 2008 through 2012, 29 percent were in small or subcompact cars. That compared with 20 percent for drivers ages 35 to 50. When picking a car for their new driver, parents should follow these guidelines: —Avoid high-horsepower vehicles that could tempt teens into speeding. —Select bigger cars that have the mass to protect occupants in an accident. —Put young drivers in vehicles equipped with electronic stability control, which helps a driver maintain control of the vehicle on curves and slippery roads. Such systems are as important as seat belts, the insurance group said. —Parents should also pick vehicles with good Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration safety ratings.

"You don't want to get your kid the spiffy red BMW that will be tempting to race," said Rosemary Shahan, president of Consumers for Auto Reliability and Safety. Parents purchasing a used car for their teen should also check to see if the vehicle has been recalled but not fixed, Shahan said. "There are something like 36 million cars out there that have a pending recall," Shahan said. The insurance group found that, on average, parents spend about $9,800 on a car for a teen. But the median point of car purchases for teens is far lower, at just $5,300. "Unfortunately, it's very difficult to get a safe vehicle for a teenager at the prices most people are paying," said Anne McCartt, Insurance Institute for Highway Safety senior vice president for research. "Our advice to parents would be to remember the risks teens take and consider paying a little more." All the cars on the group's list have electronic stability control and provide good crash protection. The group's "best choices" for less than $20,000 also have good ratings for side crash protection, good head restraints and seats for rear crash protection, and good roof strength to protect occupants in rollover crashes. Vehicles considered "good choices" for less than $10,000 have good or acceptable side crash protection and head restraints rated better than poor.

Past Fees At the end of last school year, all students were mailed a list of fees owed to the school (for example, the cost of lost textbooks). Please pay these past due fees before or on the appropriate orientation day. If fees are not paid before orientation, in lieu of schedules, students who owe fees will receive a fee statement. Once the fees are cleared with a cashier, the cashier will then present the student with his/her class schedule.

Parent Portal If you currently have access to Parent Portal, you do not need to re-register. You will continue to use the same User ID and Password that you set up last year. If you are new to Anderson Five or you have never registered for Parent Portal, you are strongly encouraged to register for this service in order to access your student’s grades and attendance. You may sign up for this service in the front office on your child’s orientation days. You will need a picture ID (preferably a driver’s license) of which we will make a copy. You will then be issued a User ID and Password.

Students Must Now Use Bus Transportation Among Anderson Five Campuses Students traveling to and from the Anderson Five Career Campus and Southwood Academy of the Arts must use district bus transportation this year. The district has discontinued allowing students to drive to and from these campuses. There may be some limited driving to college campuses and to internship sites in special circumstances, but generally most students will be riding buses to the majority of off-campus classes.

Change to 4 x 4 Semester Block Schedule This year we will be operating on a modified 4 x 4 semester block schedule. We will have two semesters with most students taking four classes each semester. We will have a few year-long classes, but most will be contained within each semester. We have been on this semester before, and it worked well for students. The biggest advantage is that students are only taking four classes at one time (instead of eight).

Request of Parents and Students Concerning Dress Code: We ask that all students bring a change of clothes to keep in their lockers, bookbags, or cars so that no student will have to go home to change clothes in case of dress code violations. These clothes, however, must meet dress code . All students are required to wear identification badges while on campus.

Student Rules/Policies Students will be issued a printed copy of school rules and policies on the first day of school. We ask that both you and your child read this information so that all rules, policies, and procedures can be followed. There is a signature form that is required to be turned in to indicate that both parents/students are informed about the student code of conduct. In closing, we look forward to an exciting new year. If we can assist you in any way, please give us a call at 260-5110. Our goal, as always, is to provide students with an excellent education so they may fulfill their future goals.
