Magnificat February 2017
THE RIGHTEOUSNESS
THAT SURPASSES
Humanity is nothing without God. Sometimes we are tempted to declare that humanity is nothing at all. But this is because comparatively few people have the good fortune to meet a real human being. After all, no one is above the law of transgression — without your grace. We have all taken the wrong road, and our empirical experience of humanity has demonstrated little but weakness, incapacity, and extreme helplessness. Our yearning to excel, our desire to achieve and accomplish things indicate that our shortcomings are not fundamental but are a superficial effect. Our dissatisfaction with the conditions of our earthly existence is deep-seated and constantly impels us to venture to try to improve our way of life.
We h a v e i t i n u s t o conceive high ideals and work for their realization, but if we are honest we will recognize the fact that we can do nothing on our own. Left to ourselves we are incomplete, not quite human. God is part of the definition of a human; inner unity with God is the primary condition for a fulfilled and successful life. The decision to recognize this is the greatest that we can make and the only one that will rescue us from the chaos in which we are involved. About turn — back to the beginning — that is the only solution and the way t o a c h i e v e l i f e ’ s fulfillment.
Fr. Alfred Delp, S.J.Fr. Delp (+1945) was a German Jesuit priest condemned to death by
the Nazis in Berlin, Germany.

PRO LIFE“A political society endures when it seeks, as a vocation, to satisfy common needs by stimulating the growth of all its members, especially those in situations of greater vulnerability or risk.”
Pope Francis, Address to the Joint Session of the U.S. Congress, September 24, 2015
THE RITE OF PEACE The sign of peace is intended to demonstrate religious communion and mutual charity towards one another. “Although we are the ones making the Sign of Peace, it is, in fact Jesus who has taken the initiative.” We have prayed the Lord’s Prayer together. Then we hear Jesus’ words, “Peace I leave you, my peace I give you” and a prayer that, because of the faith of the Church, we may find the peace and unity in accordance with His will. Each one of us are then invited to exchange peace soberly recognizing its deep meaning and significance. The sign of peace is properly exchanged by bowing to the person next to you or by shaking hands with those in immediate proximity to you with dignity and awareness of what is to follow—the Agnus Dei and Holy Communion. At this time, we ask all parishioners to continue to exchange peace with their fellow parishioners with reverence but to refrain from shaking hands. The reason for this request is two-fold: we have several parishioners who may have compromised immune systems and shaking hands puts them at added risk for infection. In addition, the current outbreak of flu and measles poses health concerns for all of us and refraining from handshaking would be beneficial for all. We encourage you to exchange peace with a nod of your head and a respectful, “Peace be with you.” You may also fold your hands in prayer as you speak or simply fold your hands and nod your head. We thank you for your thoughtful consideration of this request.

Please continue to make sure that cars are parked off the street so as to allow easy travel for our neighbors and emergency vehicles. MEN WITH A MISSION
Please be generous to the Diocesan Support Appeal. Your contribution to the Diocesan Support Appeal is a way to act with love for our sisters and brothers throughout the diocese and to continue the saving work begun by Jesus. Next week during Mass, you may complete a pledge envelope or go to www.charlottediocese.org/dsa to make a gift online.
Dear St. John parishioners, We offer you our most sincere thanks! Yet again, your generosity and goodwill, in donating to our annual youth event — Souper Bowl of Caring, has been tremendous! We Thank you for helping us to transform, in a small way, the time around the Super Bowl into the nation’s largest celebration of giving and serving. St. John’s Youth will be sending a check for the total amount (100%) raised: $1,312 to the Feed-A-Kid Program at Thermal Belt Outreach Ministry. As of this printing, over 2,897 groups have participated in Souper Bowl of Caring 2017, and they have collected over $5,176,430 in cash and food items and donated 100% to charities in their area. Groups are still reporting their totals—these numbers will continue to rise. May God bless each of you for your contribution!
“Poverty calls us to sow hope…. Poverty is the flesh of the poor Jesus, in that child who is hungry, in the one who is sick, in those unjust social
structures.” (Pope Francis, Meeting with Students of Jesuit Schools—Q&A, 6/7/13)
