Tables of PeaceYou may have noticed a new paved patio across from the front doors of the lobby. Through generous grants and donations provided by Mid-Atlantic Lutherans in Mission (MALIM), the Stellar Foundation, Thrivent, and Safe Harbor Christian Counseling, the Care and Outreach arm of Prince of Peace is creating a gathering space where workers in the adjacent neighborhood businesses can take their breaks and relax, where our school families can sit and converse, our staff can take a pause during their day, and small groups can meet and pray. As a faith community who promotes the Prince of Peace in all we do and say, the patio is an invitation to our neighbors, and all who pass by our campus, to “come and rest awhile, and experience the peace that only Christ can bring.” (Matthew 11:28 and Eph 2:14) We especially thank POP members , Jeff Crosson, Jeff Oakley, (whose Thrivent Action Team provided the manual labor in clearing the roots and dirt for the project), Dan Dove (for rendering a drawing of the hardscape project), and the lay leaders of the Care and Outreach and Properties Teams (for their vision of this outreach project.) A special fundraiser has been planned with Asian Grill (in the same area as Milano’s located at 6228 Rolling Rd) on Saturday, September 14 and Sunday, September 15. A percentage of all sales this weekend will go toward the Tables of Peace project. You can dine in or take out. Just bring in the picture below and mention the POP fundraiser so POP gets a percentage of your bill. Please visit the "Tables of Peace!" [email protected]

Care & Outreach Update“How do you support mission locally?” “Do we give funds to the usual organizations?” “Do we just do something for the community?” “Can we do something with the community?” “Can we not just be a provider of ministry but instead a partner in ministry?” These are the questions the Care & Outreach team asked ourselves earlier this year when contemplating how to bless local missions with the Capital Campaign Tithe funds. Last autumn, Care & Outreach (C&O) was given charge of $27,000 of the Capital Campaign Tithe. In consultation with BoSL, C&O came up with a plan to discover the small

organizations, maybe even individuals, who are making a difference within the local Springfield community toward Gospel proclamation and mercy ministries. We’re calling this tithe dispersal initiative: Investing in the Difference Makers. These are the small groups who are quietly making a difference in their community; who are making a continued impact, an impact which could increase with additional funds toward a specific goal or project. The thing about some of these difference makers is that their impact may not be widely publicized, which is why C&O is partnering with the local community to discover them. Starting October 1st, Care & Outreach will be accepting applications for small organizations to be considered for receiving a portion of the tithe funds. Applications will be accepted through October. Throughout September C&O will be getting the word out: working with local government, news papers, social media, and radio stations to invite members of the community to nominate the difference makers they know of. Applications will be accepted through October and before Thanksgiving the recipients will be announced.Prince of Peace members are also invited nominate the difference makers they know. Prince of Peace members are not eligible to received these funds, they are meant for external groups; however Thrivent grants are available for those who have project ideas to bless our community too. These difference maker projects will be completed by July 2020. Not only that, those who receive tithe funds will be sharing their story with Prince of Peace. Care & Outreach is excited to not only support local missions, but to partner with the community in identifying these organizations that make a local impact for spreading the Gospel and investing in our community. The People of POP Praying as OneIn January 2017, Frank and Martha Dellermann were asked by the pastor to establish a committee to lead the congregation in prayer intended to seek the

Lord’s will on the future of Prince of Peace. The prayer committee recognizes the presence of God in the many transitions that have occurred, and are continuing to occur, at Prince of Peace since then, and rejoices to be in the midst of a praying congregation. Now that Prince of Peace is starting a new school year, and the call committee is continuing the call process, the committee asks the congregation to call daily upon the Lord, expecting to hear His voice, ready and eager to do His will. We ask the congregation to do this individually, in small groups, and as an entire congregation. The Lord is with us and will never leave us nor forsake us. Great things He has done, and His plans for our future are for good. How exciting it is to see what great plans the Lord has for us at Prince of Peace. Pray continually and be alert for His response as He leads us! Frank Dellermann [email protected]

To all members of Prince of Peace who have extended

prayers, well wishes, concerns, and get well cards;

I want to say thank you very much. The outpouring

of goodwill has been astonishing to me.

I broke my leg while on vacation in Colorado and

during the 1800 mile drive home (Carol drove all the way) and also during my recovery to date we have received encouragement

and blessings from so many people. The x-rays reveal that I have a crack in the

fibula (small leg bone) above the ankle, which hopefully

will resolve itself in a simple and rapid recovery. I am

now stomping around in one of those moon boot walking casts. During this ordeal,

Carol has been very helpful in caring for me, for which I

am so thankful.

It is heartening that so many members of PoP reach out

in times of need. Carol and I thank you very much for your expressions of good

will.

New Sermon Series (Continued from page 1)

We’ll begin with creation, this year focusing on the Garden of Eden and then move quickly through the sweep of Biblical history in the Hebrew Bible up to Christmas when the preaching texts will begin to focus on the ministry of Jesus as the Gospel of Mark tells the story.

The theme chosen by Pastor Gary for this year comes from a new monograph from Lutheran Hour Ministries and the Barna Group, a Christian research organization. It is called “Households of Faith: The rituals and relationships that turn a home into a sacred space.” So in addition to tracing the history of God’s work of salvation in the Hebrew Bible and the New Testament, we will consider how we can help our homes to become sacred spaces. The word household is used because it’s the census term for any domicile and thus includes people living alone, with friends, with a nuclear family, with extended family and or with many other combinations in our diverse society.

Let this be a little teaser from the Households of Faith study: “Faith formation is connected to and increases with hospitality. (Households that regularly host non-family guests are more likely to talk about faith, pray or read the Bible together.) You’ll hear more about this and other findings as the year progresses. [email protected]

Welcome Deaconess Cassie Brown (Continued from page 1) Apparently, the Lord was also aware of this and presented us with Cassandra (Cassie) Brown. Cassie and her husband Doug are actually members of Prince of Peace but we haven’t seen much of them for the last fifteen years as she has been completing her deaconess studies and serving on the staff of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church (ELCA) on Connecticut Avenue in Washington, D.C.

Cassie has now been offered and has accepted the Prince of Peace position of Minister of Care, for 32 hours a week (four days). She will be responsible for organizing and managing all the pastoral care needs and the visits associated with them. She will be working with Pastors Gary Rueter, Mark Boriack, and Rob Winston, as well as the

Stephen Ministers and staff members John Durkin and Tiffany Sears in meeting those needs. She will also serve as the staff member to the Care and Outreach Leadership Team. She will begin her service the day after Labor Day.

Cassie received her deaconess training at Valparaiso University in Indiana after a career in Air Force and civilian nursing. She was interviewed first by Pastor Gary and then at his request, by a team of interviewers from the staff and lay leaders of the congregation, namely, Jennifer Gross, Dave Mahen, Dave Leege, Mike Bryan, Janet Podgorski, and Tiffany Sears. All were in agreement that Cassie and her training were a good fit for Prince of Peace.

You’ll begin seeing Cassie around the office and worship in September. She’ll welcome getting to know you better and will relish the opportunity to tell you more about what it means to serve as a deaconess. Those who have already met her think you’ll find her to be a caring and faithful witness to the grace of God in Jesus and full of the Holy Spirit. [email protected]

Prince of Peace Music MinistryDo you enjoy singing the hymns and songs at services? Have you ever been curious about how the ensembles learn their beautiful anthems? Did you once play an instrument but haven’t played in a while? If so, come to check out the Prince of Peace Music Ministry’s Open Houses, during the third week of September to learn about the many ensembles. We want to introduce everyone to see how you can be a part of it. We are not just looking for seasonedmusicians; we are looking for people who have never been in a music group. All you need is your voice or instrument and a love for music. There is no obligation to join and you do not need to have any prior experience. If you don’t read music, but would like to learn how, please come and our ensemble directors will show you. Each Open House event will include an introduction and rehearsal so you can see what it is like to be in an ensemble and see if it’s right for you. Below are the dates and times for each Open House Rehearsal. If you are interested in attending an open house, please email Michael Rossi, Music Ministry Director, at [email protected]. Pleasefeel free to share this to anyone outside of POP you think might have an interest. See the next page for details.

Care Ministry TrainingSeptember 21, 9:30am--12pm, room 21It’s Fall and Time for a Fresh Start ! Are you ready to experience God in a fresh way? Then recall “…we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” (Ephesians 2:10). God draws people to worship every week. He wants to bless them and does this through the personal attention we give to our church guests. As a Care Minister you can partner with God in His plans for them. Care Ministry offers you the opportunity to see God’s Spirit working in the hearts of visitors through your welcoming words and prayer. Having doubts about your ability to serve? It’s easy – easy because you only have to make yourself available. That is, give yourself to what God wants to do through you to welcome visitors. The basic job is to make friends. You will serve on a team. Being on a Care Ministry Team, you won’t be alone, and your Team will give you support and encouragement. Each Team serves once a month. To find out more, join us at the Care Ministry Orientation and learn how Care Ministry is impacting Prince of Peace and can make a difference in your life. Training will be provided also in what Care Ministry Team Members do. Questions? Contact Gary Miller at [email protected]

Consecration Weekend (Continued from page 1)Stewardship Team has selected the New Consecration Sunday Stewardship Program as a way to teach the biblical and spiritual principles of generous giving in our stewardship education emphasis this year.New Consecration Sunday is based on the biblical philosophy of the need of the giver to give for his or her own spiritual development rather than the need of the church to receive. Instead of treating people like members of a social club who should pay dues, we will treat people like followers of Jesus Christ who want to give unselfishly as an act

of discipleship. New Consecration Sunday encourages people toward proportional and systematic giving in response to the question, “What percentage of my income is God calling me to give?” During worship on Consecration weekend, we are asking our attendees and members to make their finance commitments to our church’s missionary, benevolent, and educational ministries in the community and around the world.Every attendee and member who completes an Estimate of Giving Card does so voluntarily by attending worship on Consecration Weekend. We urge people to attend who feel strongly opposed to completing a card. The procedure is done in such a way that no one feels personal embarrassment if he or she chooses not to fill out a card.We will do no home solicitation to ask people to complete cards. During worship our guest leader will conduct a brief period of instruction and inspiration, climaxed by members making their commitments as a confidential act of worship. We will encourage participation in Consecration Weekend events through the Consecration Weekend team, BOSL and L10+ members. Since we will make no follow-up visits to ask people to complete their cards, we will make every effort to inform, inspire, and commit everyone to attend Consecration Weekend worship. Thanks in advance for your enthusiastic participation in Consecration Weekend events.
