acTS 11:1-181 Now the apostles and the brothers who were throughout Judea heard that the Gentiles also had received the word of God. 2 So when Peter went up to Jerusalem, the circumcision party criticized him, saying, 3 “You went to uncircumcised men and ate with them.” 4 But Peter began and explained it to them in order: 5 “I was in the city of Joppa praying, and in a trance I saw a vision, something like a great sheet descending, being let down from heaven by its four corners, and it came down to me. 6 Looking at it closely, I observed animals and beasts of prey and reptiles and birds of the air. 7 And I heard a voice saying to me, ‘Rise, Peter; kill and eat.’ 8 But I said, ‘By no means, Lord; for nothing common or unclean has ever entered my mouth.’ 9 But the voice answered a second time from heaven, ‘What God has made clean, do not call common.’ 10 This happened three times, and all was drawn up again into heaven. 11 And behold, at that very moment three men arrived at the house in which we were, sent to me from Caesarea. 12 And the Spirit told me to go with them, making no distinction. These six brothers also accompanied me, and we entered the man’s house. 13 And he told us how he had seen the angel stand in his house and say, ‘Send to Joppa and bring Simon who is called Peter; 14 he will declare to you a message by which you will be saved, you and all your household.’ 15 As I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell on them just as on us at the beginning. 16 And I remembered the word of the Lord, how he said, ‘John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.’ 17 If then God gave the same gift to them as he gave to us when we believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I that I could stand in God’s way?” 18 When they heard these things they fell silent. And they glorified God, saying, “Then to the Gentiles also God has granted repentance that leads to life.”

John 3:1-81 Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. 2 This man came to Jesus by night and said to him, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God, for no one can do these signs that you do unless God is with him.” 3 Jesus answered him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.” 4 Nicodemus said to him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?” 5 Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7 Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’ 8 The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.”

The aPoSTleS’ creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, wascrucified,died,andwasburied.Hedescendedtothedead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

The collecT

Almighty and everlasting God, you are always more ready to hear than we to pray, and to give more than we either desire or deserve: Pour down upon us the abundance of your mercy, forgiving us those things of which our conscience is afraid, and giving us those good things for which we are not worthy to ask, except through the merits and mediation of Jesus Christ our Savior; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

diSTribuTion of reServed SacramenT

Reserved sacrament was distributed by our clergy prior to today’s service so that we could receive the sacrament together. Reserved sacrament is consecrated elements of the Lord’s Supper that are brought to the sick, confined, or others kept away from celebration of Holy Communion. All baptized believers in Jesus Christ are welcome to receive communion.

I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. And the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.” For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him. John 6:51, 55-56

Officiant: The Body of our Lord Jesus Christ, which was given for you, preserve your body and soul to everlasting life.

If you are are unable to receive Communion today, you may participate in worship with this prayer below:

A Prayer When Unable to Receive CommunionHeavenly Father, I now join my heart and mind with all my brothers and sisters in Holy Mother Church throughout the world who gather at your holy table this day to remember your death and proclaim your resurrection.Acceptmysoulandbodyasalivingsacrifice, holyandacceptable to you, through the merits of your dear son, Jesus Christ, our Lord. Sermon reflecTion QueSTion

• How would you fill in the blank in a contemporary and personal way: “If then God gave the same gift to them as he gave to us when we believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I that I could stand in God’s way?” When they heard these things they fell silent. And they glorified God, saying, “Then to the __________ also God has granted repentance that leads to life.”

• What are the implications of unity between those who have received the Holy Spirit? Read Ephesians 2:13-16. What is a way that you could manifest that unity this week?

More than 140 of us were able to gather outside this past Sunday, July 19, with another 60 participants online, to learn from God’s Word and celebrate Baptisms and Holy Communion. It was a sweet time of worship together and a gift after having spent so many months dispersed. In appreciation of the opportunity to gather, we are planning to hold outdoor gathered worship on August 9, 16, 23, and 30th. In the event of rain or excessive heat, a cancellation notice will be sent out day-of, along with an RSVP for worship in the sanctuary. Please RSVP for the outdoor gathered services using this link.

We are The church

Copies of We Are The Church, a devotional guide for families with children and youth, are available from Deacon Liz.
