Wassana Diyawara 2016

Living the cosy comfortable life of the suburbs, with all its technologies and conveniences, how often

if ever are we reminded that there are whole communities out there, sharing this same soil, but

struggling through life in one great battle simply to live another day? “Wassana Diyawara” is our

humble attempt to be the soothing rain to their sun-scorched lives, the oasis in their journey through

life’s harsh hinterland. And this is your opportunity to be a part of that humanitarian effort.

Built on the strength of the entire student body and led by the Medical Faculty Buddhist Association,

this project aims at rural development and health promotion at a sustainable level.

This year’s edition is an extension of the highly successful, unbroken run of projects spreading over a

decade, showcasing the unity and determination of the Colombo medics, and drawing praise from

all quarters. The previous project locations are as follows;

‘Uda divulwewa’ is a small village in Kurunegala District situated 6 km away from Ambanwela town

off the Anuradhapura-Padeniya main road.

Our Endeavour …

For the School

Udu divulwewa Maha Vidyalaya, of Mahawa Educational Zone, Kurunegala District, accommodates

250 students under 26 teachers. Despite severe deficiencies, classes are conducted from Grade 1 to

Grade 13, with Advanced Level education only available under the Arts stream.

The school infrastructure consists of 3 main buildings, a library, a laboratory and teachers’ quarters.

The current facilities are inadequate for the current student population. Furthermore, the lack of

specific educational equipment (Computers, library books, cupboards, sports equipment, musical

instruments etc) and lack of books, stationary and other educational material were identified as main

issues among these economically deprived children. We aim to address these deficiencies as listed

below.

For the Temple

‘Gawarathissarama Rajamaha Vihara’ is a temple of religious and historical importance. Sinhala

Buddhist communities of 7 nearby villages maintain a close relationship with this temple. Hence our

plan is to start the development at the temple, then spread out to the community.

4. Provide electric lighting to the path leading from the monks’

quarters to the stupa 75 000.00

For the Villagers

1. Implement a youth empowerment programme

Under this we expect to hold advisory sessions under various relevant topics for the village

youth

2. Organize a health camp

We have planned to hold a health camp conducted by Consultants and junior medical officers

at the Uda diwulwewa Maha Vidyalaya, for the benefit of the community of all surrounding

villages. Doctors from our Faculty as well as the from the enjoined Teaching Hospitals are

expected to participate in this, featuring among others, clinics specialising in Medicine,

Surgery, Dermatology, Paediatrics, Gynaecology and Obstetrics, Ophthalmology and ENT.

Junior medical officers will manage the Outdoor Patients Department, and patients needing

further evaluation will be referred to the consultants at the specialist clinics. Patients needing

further treatment as well as children identified during the School Health Camp as needing

further management will be referred to relevant health institutions in the region. A

programme will be undertaken to ensure their compliance with the management plan.

Estimated total cost for the Health Camp = Rs. 250 000.00

3. Implement a spiritual development programme for the villagers

In order to bring the villagers closer to the Dhamma preached by Lord Buddha, we are

planning to organize a sil observation programme on Poya day, under the patronage of

renowned Buddhist monks in the country. The temple committee will be encouraged and

supported to continue this sil observation programme on every Poya day monthly.

4. The youth society of the village has initiated a project to build a most needed community hall

to the village. The funding has been by the collection of money from villagers. Due to the

financial constrains the work has not been completed. We hope to wire the hall, complete

the construction and handover the hall to the villagers.

11. Provision of test tubes and other necessities to the Science Stream

12. Renovating the broken down shrine room and the dilapidated buddha statue

The shrine room built during the early days of the school is currently in a state of disrepair due to

the decaying wrought by the anthills. Therefore we intend to completely renovate the shrine room

and provide a new buddha statue.

13. Building two separate sets of toilets for the students and the teachers

Since the previously built toilets are now in ruins, currently there’s only one toilet for both the

male and female students while both male and female staff members also use just one common

toilet. Therefore separate sets of toilets are should be built for the staff and the students.

Estimated cost of building the toilets

The total cost for the toilet for the male students = Rs.40000.00

The total cost for the toilet for the teachers = Rs.40000.00

The total cost for the toilet for the female students = Rs.120000.00

The roof of the new building which has been built a few years back has been constructed using

wood gathered from the village and corrugated asbestos sheets. Since the roof is nondurable and

potentially unsafe it has to be reconstructed following the regulations of the Ministry of

Education.

The 200 students who study at the Dhamma School have no option but to sit on the floor, since

the school does not have a single desk or chair.

To replace the present unusable lamp stand with a new lamp stand capable of holding 100

lamps.

The present latrine facilities are extremely inadequate for the use of the devotees who come to

participate in the poya day sil programs. Thus, we hope to replace the current unsuitable latrines

with 2 separate latrines for the devotees and the monks.

For the devotees = Rs. 75,000/=

4. To install electric lights in the road between the Awasa geya and the dagoba

To install electric lights in the 150m stretch of gravel road between the Awasa geya and the

dagoba.
