    Part 2: Written Essa

0ith close reference to the 6uote abo#e, discuss the role of teachers as agents of change in the

successful transformation of the 'alaysian school curriculum in meeting the as%irations.

ducation is a dynamic system which will go through reformation from time to time in

order to cater the needs and as%irations of a country )Noriati, !oon, (harifah and "uraidah,

4/1/*. !ased on this statement, it can be said that reforms are needed as a renewal agent to

amend the current system of education. In order to achie#e the as%irations included in the

statement gi#en by our rime 'inister, teachers are the res%onsible indi#iduals to carry out the

actions of changing to our education system.

An agent of change according to !ass )177/* is a %erson whose acts affect other %eo%lemore than other %eo%le8s acts affect them. An agent of change is thus an indi#idual whose acts,

words and lifestyle influences %ositi#e change by others imitating and influencing them or the

system. They work within the %rescribed system gi#en by the go#ernment to change the whole

system and make amendments to ensure the system to be better. For e9am%le, teachers in

'alaysia should be bound by the %rescribed curriculum and syllabus %ro#ided by the 'inistry of

ducation to be able to hold the as%irations highlighted by our rime 'inister.

There are fi#e outcomes that the !lue%rint as%ires to for the 'alaysian education system

as a whole+ access, 6uality, e6uity, unity, and efficiency. These outcomes are in line with the

as%irations listed. !ased on the 'alaysia ducation !lue%rint )4/1:24/45*, there are a total

amount of ele#en shifts to transform the education system in order to achie#e the as%irations

mentioned by the rime 'inister. The most highlighted shift that a teacher needs to be bound by

is the fourth shift which is to transform teaching into the %rofession of choice.

According to this shift, go#ernment is to raise the entry bar for teachers from 4/1: to be

amongst to% :/; of graduates. It means that teachers should increase their own education

le#el to hold the res%onsibilities to change the whole system of 'alaysian education itself. An

educated teacher could %ro#ide better teaching and learning sessions to the %u%ils and

indirectly contribute in changing our education system.

It is mentioned that teachers should also focus on their core function of teaching from

4/1: onwards. Teachers nowadays always com%laining on the insufficient %ayment and lead

Teachers must not be afraid of taking risks to do some changes in their teaching

%rofession. For e9am%le, a teacher should always e9%eriment their teaching styles to know

which style suits the %u%ils best and increase their interests in learning a new thing. In order to

co%e with any failure, a teacher should be highly moti#ated to o#ercome %roblems and feel

confident in their abilities to go for solutions to the %roblems.

Teachers can collaborate with each other and with other organi=ations to work on

curriculum de#elo%ment to strengthen the school management system and to %romote the

reform that addresses the factors contributing to the e9clusion of child labourers from school.

Teachers could set u% a network among them which could su%%ort them to influence changes

in educational %olicy and %ractices. This could contribute in changing the 'alaysian education

system as in accordance to the statement stated by our rime 'inister.

To be in line with one of the focuses in the !lue%rint which is to ensure that e#ery

student is encouraged to learn an additional language in the mo#e to e6ui% them well for

entering the workforce in a globali=ed world, teachers need to e6ui% themsel#es first with the

knowledge of a new language in order to further the learning to the %u%ils. It is good that the

go#ernment has come out with such decision because it could hel% the children to ac6uire a

new thing that could benefit them in future.

The use of Information and ommunication Technologies )IT* in teaching could also

hel% teachers in changing the con#entional way of teaching and attract children to learn better

in classrooms. #erybody knows that it is hard to get twenty %lus heads and eyes looking at

you and therefore, it could be beneficial to deli#er new knowledge in an engaging and attention2

grabbing way which could hel% teachers to use less effort in controlling the classrooms. This is

also one of the reforms a teacher could use in achie#ing the as%irations %ointed out in the

    !lue%rint.

(tudent2centred learning should be included in teaching and learning %rocess toenhance children8s creati#ity and coo%eration in their learning %rocess. ands2on acti#ities are

best in letting the children e9%erience the learning at the best le#el and ac6uire the knowledge

better. In order to achie#e this, teachers should %lay their roles in encouraging and reinforcing

the children to %artici%ate in e#ery acti#ities conducted in the classroom. Teachers should also

be creati#e in coming out with such acti#ities to enhance children8s learning and change the

    education system itself.

As the conclusion, teachers are the most im%ortant %erson to be dealt with when it

comes to the reformation of the whole 'alaysian education system because teachers are the%erson who the children most interacted with. 0ithout teachers, it can be said that it is almost

im%ossible for a country to change the education system and e9%eriment something new to the

    current educational situations.

As the changing agents, it is crucial that teachers %artici%ate in decision2making and in

educational %lanning and reform. Teachers should work together to achie#e this as%iration and

ensure that the ste%s taken are within the 'alaysian curriculum conte9t. These are

%rere6uisites for im%ro#ing the 6uality of education in all countries, es%ecially in de#elo%ing

    countries like ours, 'alaysia.
