I am honored to present the 2016 Annual Report of the activities of the Educational Advancement Foundation, Inc. I am proud to share this overview of the many accomplishments that were achieved. Our Board focus remains on four priorities: 1) Growth of Foundation Assets, 2) Growth of Corporate and Private Donors, 3) Growth of Capitalized Endowments and 4) Growth of Scholarships Awarded. These priorities are in line with our goals, our four-year strategic plan, and the demonstrated need of our communities.

During 2016 we increased membership engagement through chapter and individual donor initiatives. Our membership base swelled to over 66,953 members, the largest to date, which was a 4% increase over 2015, and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. chapters contributed almost $300,000 to the Foundation, compared to $236,000 the prior year. Successful implementation of our program initiatives via chapter contests, regional themes and individual appeals, resulted in growth in all targeted areas.

Our Foundation awarded over $532,800 to 430 graduate, undergraduate and college bound students and over $20,000 to 13 community organizations throughout the year. This is a 63% increase over the 263 scholarships awarded during 2015. The EAF Corporate Office received, sorted and processed over 1,000 scholarship applications. With expanded and improved scholarship application processing, effective volunteer engagement and public awareness, we are able to widen our impact and help more students achieve their educational goals. Strong Board of Director participation and support provided the framework for expansion of our corporate and private donor base, endowment pool, and unrestricted assets. The Foundation’s financial position experienced steady growth, ending the year with over $11.4 million in Net Assets versus $10.2 million in 2015. The number of fully capitalized endowments which can award scholarships hit a record 203, which was a 12% increase over the number managed in 2015. The endowment program is integral to the Foundation’s mission to support and promote lifelong learning.

In 2017 our key priorities will remain: 1) Diligent stewardship of Foundation resources, 2) Enhanced member and donor engagement through new endowment initiatives, and 3) Sustained impactful philanthropy to those aspiring to higher educational achievements. I invite you to spend time browsing our website to learn more about our mission, the communities we serve and the positive impacts to our students and their families.

On behalf of the Board of Directors and staff of the Educational Advancement Foundation, we offer our sincerest thanks for joining us as we Launch New Dimensions of Educational Excellence.

Dorothy Buckhanan Wilson President, Alpha Kappa Alpha Educational Advancement Foundation, Inc.

The Alpha Kappa Alpha Educational Advancement Foundation offers an opportunity for members, organizations and corporations to leave a lasting legacy through its Endowment Program. An endowment is a restricted, invested fund from which the interest and dividends earned are used for scholarships awards. The principal is never touched, thereby providing a scholarship “nest egg” for years to come. Special donor stipulations may be used to establish the fund to support a personal commitment, honor a loved one or support a specific profession.

These funds add a whole new dimension to the concept of nurturing lifelong learning because they allow the benefactor to reaffirm his or her commitment to a particular niche in education, by establishing specific criteria and guidelines for awarding the funds. Endowments and fellowships are also an excellent way for donors to honor the memory of a friend or loved one.

Added to EAF’s array of programs in 1995, fellowships do not require enrollment in an academic institution. These awards help to improve the quality of life of others by funding research and projects with practical applications.

Foundation fellowships have been awarded to individuals for a wide range of purposes, from assistance in finding non-violent solutions to human disputes to conducting research on hypertension and the impact of nuclear testing on marine life.

The mission of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Educational Advancement Foundation Youth P.A.C. Program is to promote healing, nurturing, learning and uplifting of youth by assisting in developing lifelong learning skills. This will be accomplished by providing awards and scholarships that support these issues.

The Youth P.A.C. program began as a vision in 1997 to involve young people in the philanthropic process. The Foundation’s leadership knew that creating

a program to channel youth philanthropic commitment to mankind would pay large dividends in the future, in the form of trained, capable leadership. The program is structured for undergraduate members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated led by a committee of peers who are also members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and chaired by the Foundation’s 2nd Vice-President.

“As a two-time EAF scholarship recipient, I can attest to the significance of EAF contributions to the pursuit of academic goals. Prior to receiving my scholarships, there hd been an increase in tuition, book costs, and

my general expenses; expenses that once required simultaneous fulfillment of three part-time positions and completion of a 20-hour semester. My EAF scholarships helped reduce my financial stress, stress that could have adverse effects on any student’s academic career. As a member of the Foundation’s Board of Directors, I understand the mission and impact of EAF now more than ever. I am committed to making sure students in

need are well aware of EAF’s resources and know that they are worth the investment.”

Message from the TreasurerI am pleased to present the Treasurer’s Report for the Alpha Kappa Alpha Educational Advancement Foundation, Inc. for the year ended December 31, 2016. We received an unqualified (clean) opinion from the Certified Public Accountant firm of Knutte & Associates, P.C. for the financial statements as of December 31, 2016.

In the fiscal year ended December 31, 2016, total assets of the Educational Advancement Foundation totaled $11.4 million, which was an 11.5% increase over the $10.2 million reported at the end of 2015. Liabilities totaled $92,188 and consisted mainly of $17,531 of accounts payables, $29,231 of scholarships payable, $14,217 of accrued payroll, $2,250 of deferred revenue and $7,929 of capital lease obligations. The fund balance (net assets) totaled $11.3 million at the end of 2016; an increase from $10.1 million in 2015. We ended 2016 with Total Revenues of $2.79 million a 56% increase over 2015. Total Expenses were $1.6 million. Contributions, Membership Fees and Endowments each experienced growth rates of 34%, 3.8%, and 10.5%, respectively.

Investment PerformanceInvestments are the largest asset totaling $8.7 million, which make up 77% of Total Net Assets. Investment returns for the Foundation increased 25% in 2016 as compared to the 1% decrease realized in 2015. EAF’s investment portfolio continues to meet its performance targets and provide a positive yield to each eligible endowment account based on positive net earnings less a slight inflation factor. Careful financial stewardship, portfolio diversification and strong financial results contribute positively to the process by which the Foundation’s mission to support lifelong learning is achieved.

EndowmentsTotal endowments managed by EAF grew 4% from 319 in 2015 to 332 at the end of 2016. The permanently restricted, capitalized portfolio increased 12% to 203. This solid endowment base provides the foundation by which we can award scholarships and community assistance grants in perpetuity. Increases in annual giving across all of EAF’s programs enable us to support the educational goals of students around the world.

Thank you for your enduring support of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Educational Advancement Foundation as we continue to make strides and “Launch New Dimensions of Educational Excellence”! Danette Anthony Reed, Treasurer
