MISSION STATEMENT
The Mission of the Portsmouth Recreation Department is to
provide and maintain responsive recreational and leisure time opportunities, facilities and services that enhance and
improve the quality of life for Portsmouth residents.
We are grateful for your continued support and we look forward to serving you for many
years to come.
CODE OF CONDUCT
Proper behavior by all participants
is expected at all times. In instances
of improper behavior, parents will be notified. If behavior cannot be
corrected then the individual (s) will be excused from further programs.
Participants shall show respect to
peers and staff, refrain from foul language and be respectful of
equipment, supplies and facilities. The Department reserves the right
to terminate individuals who cannot exhibit proper behavior.
PLEASE DRIVE WITH CAUTION
The Recreation Department would like to remind everyone to please
drive with caution as you pick up and drop off your child at any
program or facility this summer. Let’s keep our kids safe!
REFUNDS
Refunds are made only if the Recreation Department is notified
seven days in advance of the scheduled program, class or trip.
Refunds are not given once a
program has begun. Should a trip be cancelled or postponed due to
inclement weather or any other circumstance, you will be refunded
the full amount if you cannot
attend the rescheduled date.
REGISTRATION POLICY
The Portsmouth Recreation Department does its best to accommodate all those registered for a program, keeping in mind that some programs have a limited number of spots. Once the registration period is over, we will
NOT add anyone to teams. By enforcing this rule we are hopeful that adults and parents will make a greater effort to register on time. All programs are advertised in our Recreation Department Brochure, Government
Channel 22, school flyers, the local newspapers and the City of Portsmouth Recreation Department web page.
Eligible non-residents: Children from the towns of New Castle, Rye, Greenland, and Newington are allowed to
participate in programs that are directly sponsored and staffed by the Portsmouth Recreation Dept.
Throughout the year some programs/events will be restricted to Portsmouth residents only.

at the Portsmouth High School track A Practice Schedule will be given out on the
first day with full program practice schedule, dates and times.
Brief Description: No track/field experience is necessary. All participants will compete in at
least two events and possibly three depending on
the number of registered participants. A Seacoast Meet will be held Saturday, June 16
in Rochester with all winners advancing to the State Meet (location TBA) on Friday, June 22

MIDDLE SCHOOL SUMMER BASKETBALL LEAGUES
A Middle School Basketball League will be offered this summer and run in conjunction with League
Sponsors Portsmouth Recreation and the
Portsmouth Police Department. The League will offer separate divisions for both girls and boys.
Eligible participants must be entering grades 6-8 this fall. Open to residents of Portsmouth,
Greenland, Rye, New Castle and Newington. All games will be played at the Connie Bean
Recreation Center with league play beginning in
mid June and running through early August. Registration: Signups and organizational
practices will be held on the following days: Monday, May 28, Tuesday, June 12,
Monday, June 18
Times: 5:00-6:00pm - 6th grade boys 6:00-7:00pm - 7th grade boys
7:00-8:00pm - 8th grade boys 8:00-9:00pm - All girls
Cost: $70 Residents, $90 Eligible Non-residents. Includes game shirt.

Program is limited to 50 children
Length: 4 weeks, May 1-24 Location: Program will be held outside at the
Little Harbour School. Fee: Residents $40; eligible non-residents $60

Brief Description: Fun and Games is a non-competitive program with the emphasis on fun!
Each day, different activities are scheduled, such as crab soccer, capture the flag, dodge ball, messy
games and others. The program is held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:15 - 5:30 pm.

LITTLEFIELD TENNIS CAMPS AND LESSONS 2018 Littlefield Tennis offers an enjoyable learning tennis experience to players of all ages and abilities, through seasonal programs in the NH Seacoast area. Staff: Kyle Littlefield is the summer program director. Kyle and his staff are pleased to begin their 19th season with the Portsmouth Recreation Department.
The staff and junior staff are college and high school students participating in the LT work-study/ mentor program.
Dates/Location: Summer classes will be offered weekly beginning the week of July 9 through August 2 at the South Playground Tennis Courts located off Junkins Avenue across from Portsmouth City Hall.

MOTHER-SON DANCE Hawaiian Theme!
The Portsmouth Recreation Department will be sponsoring a Mother-Son Dance on Saturday,
May 12, from 6:00-8:00pm at the Portsmouth Middle
School Café. All mothers (or sisters, grandmothers, aunts or any other special adult!) and sons in grades
K-5 are invited to attend. Cost is $15 per couple and includes a Hawaiian Lei for all. We ask that all
couples bring only finger foods or dessert treats. A DJ will be playing music throughout the evening
with a few highlighted dance contests scheduled.

camps will be May 29-June 1 from 5:00 - 8:00 pm at the Connie Bean Recreation Ctr., 155 Parrott Av.
Eligible non-residents may begin to register Thursday, May 31. (Rye, Greenland, Newington
and New Castle) Beginning Monday, June 4 all registrations will be
at Spinnaker Point Adult Recreation Center,

PRESEASON CONDITIONING MIDDLE

students. The program will run from July 9 - August 23. Runners will meet at Portsmouth
High School Monday through Thursday from

Brief Description: Each week a new sport is introduced with children breaking up into teams
for instructional skills and games. Scheduled
sports are basketball, flag football, soccer, volleyball, street hockey, ultimate Frisbee and
more! Multi-sport is a non-competitive and fun program where all participants play an equal
amount of time. No experience is required as

YOUTH BASEBALL

Brief Description: The Youth Baseball Program is designed for children to have fun and learn the
fundamentals of baseball. Each day will focus on
fun drills to enhance skill development and end with a small baseball game using a whiffle ball
and/or soft t-ball. The program is co-sponsored by Marshall Rental Center.

PORTSMOUTH HS CLIPPER GIRLS BASKETBALL CAMP
Ages: Girls entering grades 1-8

registration fee is due on the first day of camp. Brief Description: Join Portsmouth High Girls
Basketball Coach Tim Hopley and his staff of
current Clipper players for a camp filled with teaching basketball fundamentals and having fun
in the process! Girls will be split up in groups according to their age and/or skill level.

Brief Description: Come learn to surf with the experienced coaches at Summer Sessions Surf
Shop and learn surfing fundamentals in a safe and fun environment. No experience needed or any
surf equipment, just a desire to ride some waves!

relaxed and fun environment. Emphasis will be
to increase soccer skills and fundamentals by getting the kids to have as many touches as they can with the
ball every session. Each day will begin with fun soccer drills and end with a small soccer game.

ALL SPORTS CAMP FULL DAY PROGRAM

Camp Size: Limited to 35 children
Brief Description: This camp is for the child who wants to learn and play a variety of sports.
Campers will play various sports throughout the day including: touch football, soccer, basketball,
volleyball, baseball, kickball and a trip each day to
the Peirce Island Pool for a swim. Different fields and locations will be used with the City Recreation
Bus as needed. Campers should bring a snack, water and lunch daily. Pizza and drinks are
provided on Fridays of each week.

PORTSMOUTH HIGH GIRLS FIELD HOCKEY CAMP
Grades: Girls entering grades 4 - 9 Camp Dates: June 16 - 17
Time: 9:30am - 12:30pm
Location: Portsmouth High School Turf Field Cost: $40 (Check payable to PHS Field Hockey
Boosters) Equipment needed: Stick, shin guards, mouth
guards, & googles for middle-schoolers. Brief Description: This two day camp will focus
on individual skill instruction and small games.
Players will be instructed to technique and have the opportunity to advance their skills.
Sara Carpenter, Varsity Field Hockey Coach at Portsmouth High School, along with current

Brief Description: Camp FunStuff
is an all day program consisting of
organized games, group activities, sports, swimming, special events,
field trips, arts & crafts and much more. The mornings will be filled
with scheduled group activities with all
afternoons (except for the all day field trips) spent at Peirce Island Pool,
Fort Foster, New Castle Commons or Wallis Sands Beach. Rainy days will
bring activities into the school gym for movies, board games and crafts
available for all campers to use.
Camp fee includes T-shirt, weekly field trips and bus transportation.

The Recreation Center Features Membership Policies Daily & Class Fees
Full court gymnasium used for a variety of sports
and recreation activities.
Indoor track that is 1/12 of a mile. The track is
a rubberized floor for walking and running. Expanded cardiovascular room with treadmills
ellipticals, recumbent bikes, stationary bicycles,
stair machines, Adaptive trainers, and rowing
machines utilizing wireless TV sound. Separate weight room with new machines, free
weights, dumbbells and exercise equipment.
50 foot indoor pool with 4 swimming lanes.
Hot tub and a steam room on pool deck.
NEW SAUNAS in the locker rooms.
Aerobics room for dance, yoga, and exercise.
Multi-purpose room, and a variety of classes!
Memberships are available for Portsmouth
residents and non Portsmouth residents. You
must have a valid drivers license or State ID for proof of residency.
Memberships are sold yearly from January
through December and prorated. You may
also join monthly with a credit card or from your banks checking account.
You must be 18 years of age or older and
out of high school to use the facility. All members and guests must use the parking
lot adjacent to the building. Please observe all posted rules inside and outside of the building.
The monthly fee is based on the year fee.
A one day only visit is $5.00 for anyone
who is a Portsmouth resident. Non-resident one day visit is a $10.00 fee.
Most classes require an additional fee but
offer discounts for members. Non-residents may sign up for classes.
Gift certificates are available to purchase
for memberships.
All sport leagues and programs require a

Originally built in 1937 and fully refurbished in 2003, the Peirce Island Pool is the perfect place to spend a hot, sunny summer afternoon. With a length of 100 yards, an average width of 33 yards and a gently sloping depth from 18 inches to six feet, it provides space for every age and ability. This year the pool opens June 25, and operates seven days a week for nine weeks. Weekday mornings are reserved for children's swimming lessons, while afternoons, evenings and weekends are open for everyone, including seven lap lanes at the deep end that are available during every open swim.

PRIVATE LESSONS
Our instructors can work one on one with students of all ages who need individualized attention or want to work on specific goals. Lessons can be
scheduled during morning lessons or open swim. Prices start at only $20 per half hour.

SUMMER SWIM LESSONS The Peirce Island Pool’s shallow depth and large size make it an excellent site for learning to swim. Swim lessons are offered for children of all ages and abilities. We offer American Red Cross Lessons taught by certified water safety instructors, and levels run from Parent & Child classes through Level 6. Contact the pool if you are unsure of what level your child should be in.
Classes are held two days a week for four weeks, and are 30 minutes in length, beginning 9:30 am until 12:00 noon, Monday - Friday, or once a week on Saturday mornings for eight weeks.

The Portsmouth Recreation Department will be staffing the Peirce Island Boat Launch beginning in May for the Spring/ Summer/ Fall boating season. Residents of Portsmouth are entitled to a season pass and full access to the Peirce Island Boat Launch FREE OF CHARGE. The Portsmouth Recreation Department will be
sponsoring youth soccer this fall for both boys and girls in grades K - 4. We will again have
separate divisions for the boys and girls if registration numbers allow us to do so.
Program cost for residents is $45 and eligible non-residents will be $65
Fee includes shirt, socks and shin-guards.

CITY BALLFIELD RENTALS
Anyone who would like to reserve a city ballfield may do so by calling Tim Bailey, Monday-Friday
from 9:00 am-3:00 pm at 766-1483. The fee is
$10.00. You may reserve a field up to 7 days in advance. All fees must be paid prior to the
scheduled reservation to secure the field. Field rental fees should be paid at the Spinnaker Point
Recreation Center, 30 Spinnaker Way.

The City of Portsmouth and Wilcox Industries
will be sponsoring the annual fireworks display on
Tuesday, July 3rd at South Mill Pond across from the Portsmouth City Hall beginning at 9:15 pm.
(Rain date is scheduled for Thursday, July 5th at the same time.) Portsmouth has a long
standing tradition of hosting one of the seacoast areas finest
displays of fireworks!
