but giving blood will save a life! Only 8
more slots to fill to reach our goal of 32
pints donated.
Wednesday, Feb. 5th
10:30 AM – 2:15 PM
4th Floor Mercedes/Porsche Room
Contact Polly Richardson for details or
to schedule your appointment.
- Donating blood is easy! The whole
process takes less than an hour; the
actual donation procedure itself usually
takes less than 10 minutes.
- Giving Blood is safe! A new, sterile
needle is used for each donor
and discarded.
- You have plenty of blood to share!
Your body constantly makes new
blood. The average adult body holds
10 to 12 pints of blood, but a

- Your blood is always needed!
Your donation could help give
a friend, neighbor, or a member
of your community another
chance at life.

SALEM BMWGIVES BIGStanding ovation for BMW of Salem!
They recently presented over $10,000 to
five of their local non-profits. Customers
who purchased a vehicle during the
Holiday Season selected these
organizations and the checks were
presented at the end of January. The
non-profits who received a BIG check
(literally) were United Way of the
Mid-Willamette Valley, Union Gospel
Mission of Salem, CASA of Marion
County, Willamette Humane Society,
and the Alzheimer’s Network of Oregon.
Dear Josephine,
Last week when going into the fridge for
my lunch, my nostrils were violated with a
smell that can only be described as the
rotten, decayed, carcasses of long forgotten
vegetables. I swiftly shut the door to trap
the smell in, with a slight panic attack
when I realized that I left my lunch in the
fridge. How was I going to save my
precious lunch from the evil clutches of the
mystery smell? I didn’t want the smell to
infiltrate the building, I would hate to
cause an uproar that would surely occur
when the odor enveloped the senses of
everyone on the 3rd floor.
I tried to look through the glass to see if
I could spot the offending item, I was
willing to sacrifice myself so that no one
else would have to go through the same
DEAR JOSEPHINE
Jo King - Worked for Lithia 15 years, started as a temp and never left after
the job was done. You can find her in the stairways or elevator. She has high
aspirations of being on Food Network's Iron Chef so in her spare time you
can find her at Shoji's cooking with her own "secret ingredient."

nightmare that awaited me. I spotted a bag
in the back that looked forgotten and
could possibly be harboring the criminal
smell. Not wanting to touch it without
proper protection, I walked to the other
side of the break room to grab some paper
towels. Out of the corner of my eye I saw a
fellow employee reach for the door to the
fridge, I tried to yell out to warn her of the
danger that lurked behind the seemingly
innocent fridge door.
Noooooooooooooo, but it was too late,
she yanked that door open and promptly
passed out from the smell. Tucking my
nose into my shirt, I dashed to the fridge,
grabbed the bag of nasty and ran out of the
break room with it. I disposed of the item
at a safe secure unknown location, walking
back into the break room to a room full of
applause, I felt like a hero that day. With
confidence, I opened the fridge and
retrieved my lunch, which was relieved to
be out of that tomb of doom. Some say I
saved the building from certain death that
day, but I’m just an average man, I put my
slacks on one pant leg at a time. I just want
others to be aware of the danger of leaving
rotten food in the fridge, save a life and
throw your lunch away if you aren’t going
to eat it. Please help me pass along this
public service announcement.
Sincerely,
Superguy
(Superman was already taken, but I feel Irank up there with his superpowers. )
Dear Super… guy.
Although I wonder how much of this
story is actually true, it does bring up a
good point that we all need to take
responsibility for our own lunches in the
fridge. Remember to write your name and
the date on your food so that when the
fridge is getting cleaned out it’s easy to
make decisions on what needs to be kept or
thrown out. Also, throwing out rotten food
doesn’t mean you have superpowers, it just
means that you have a strong stomach so
congratulations on that… I guess.
Thanks,
Jo King

BEING A LOSER: NOW IT’S A GOOD THINGBy Sam Whichard
Normally, being called a loser is a bad
thing, however if you are one of the 23
men and women who are participating in
the Biggest Loser competition it’s a good
thing. It means you are losing weight, you
are losing bad eating habits and you are
losing inches around your waist! We’re off
to a great start with this year’s team group
of players, it’s a tough competition out
there with both men and women
competing against each other.
Be aware of those who will try to
sabotage you with the “thoughtful”
doughnuts, or cookies that are brought in.
Be strong, don’t give in to the temptation!
When I am in diet mode, I practically live
at Trader Joes. My favorite snack from there
is a cilantro and chive yogurt dip with cut
up Persian cucumbers, or sweet peppers, it’s
good with any kind of vegetable really.
Even better, it’s low in calories and I can
pronounce everything in the ingredients!
Water is a very important aspect of dieting,
here are a few tips.
DRINK WATER THROUGHOUT
THE DAY.
Drinking water during the day can help
keep you feeling full without consuming
high-calorie coffees and snacks. You may
also eat less when you do have a snack, as
you should already have the sensation of
being full. Consuming fewer calories on a
daily basis can help speed weight loss.
DRINK A GLASS OF WATER BEFORE
EVERY MEAL.
In several studies of weight loss in
overweight adults, those who drank water
before eating a meal regularly consumed
fewer calories and saw improved weight loss
results. The effect of water on meal calorie
consumption has been shown to be more
effective in older adults than in young
adults. Regardless of your age, if you use
water before a meal to increase weight loss,
do not forget to monitor quantities and
calorie intake of your food as well.
COMBINE A CALORIE-RESTRICTED
DIET AND A WATER DIET.
Drinking 16 ounces of water before each
meal and limiting daily calorie intake
(1200 for women and 1500 for men) can
jumpstart weight loss and help dieters
maintain weight loss successfully for up
to a year.

the time is right for YOU to buy or sell
your home.
Meet Mandy Olsen, a licensed Real

tool for home owners as they decide
whether or not to place their home on the
market. With just a quick tour of their
home, she can compile the research needed
in order to determine how much their
home will actually sell for.
Mandy also offers FREE home matching
services through her website. She can set up
web searches to automatically alert
potential home buyers when the perfect
house hits the market. It makes home
shopping easy and fun! There is also a “My
Neighborhood Tracker” tool that allows
clients to receive notices whenever a home
becomes available in their neighborhood,
and eventually sells.

Misoya Bistro opened two years ago in
Vogel Plaza, next to the Craterian, and they
have been growing steadily thanks to their
loyal customer base. This summer they
renovated the area that was formerly their
patio into a new dining area to
accommodate more seating, and now the
outside seating flows around the building.
When I asked the manager, Kathy, what it
was like to work at Misoya she responded
with a huge smile. “We’re like a family here
– we feel loved and our employee’s are very
happy.” And it’s no wonder they’re like a
family – most of them have been there
since the opening. Head Chef Thomas
Kim has been mentoring the kitchen staff
since the doors opened, so you can count
on your food being consistent.
The menu at Misoya is extensive. This
restaurant doesn’t just focus on
Japanese/sushi – they have a wide range of
Korean and Chinese specialties as well,
meaning there’s something for everyone. If
fish or seafood isn’t your favorite you can
try the tempura or teriyaki. And the
kitchen staff is more than happy to
accommodate special requests – everything
is made to order, so just let them know
what you’re craving! If sushi AND surprises
are your thing, the Chef would gladly make
you a “special roll” –
chef ’s choice!
If that sounds a little too risky for you,
you can specify the two types of fish you’d
like included and he’ll build your roll from
there. My personal sushi favorites are the
Double Double Roll – tempura shrimp,
crab meat, cucumber & avocado topped
with spicy salmon and tobiko and the Tiger
Roll – a regular California roll topped with

A "PER" FECT PARTNERSHIPBy Sara Plankenhorn
I recently had the privilege of sitting
down for a chat with two of Lithia Motor’s
rarest of gems. Wow! What lives! Past,
present, and future!
Barbara and Randall Perkins have been
with Lithia since 2002. Starting out as a
berry picker at the tender age of three- Barb
is the Assistant Vice President of Human
Resources. Randy’s vocation started in a
fish freezing factory- he is a data warehouse
specialist. The Perkins met in 1997 while
working together at First America
Automotive in San Francisco.
They are parents to a son who lives in
Boise and a twelve year old male German
Shepherd /yellow Lab mix-Harris. He is the
love of their lives. Most of what they do
revolves around this 85 lb. bundle of joy.
They travel and vacation where he may
join them.
Barb was born in Albany, Oregon. She
spent her time growing up in Salem and
then moved to the San Francisco Bay Area.
Barb eventually ended up in Boise, Idaho.
It was there that she attended Boise State-
home of the “Smurf Turf”. She migrated
back to San Francisco for a thirteen year
stint and worked for a time for First
America Automotive as the Director of
Human Resources.
Randy was born and raised in Portland,
Maine-specifically Cape Elizabeth. He
received his college degree and did his
graduate work at Clarkson University in
Potsdam, New York. His area of study was
chemistry. He was a studio technician and a
teacher’s aide in Oakland at the California
College of Arts and Crafts. He then
ventured to Italy as a glass blower’s
assistant. This ten year career took him
back in forth between Murano, Italy and
Big Sur, California.
Changing paths- Randy went back to
school and got a degree in Computer
Science. In 1985 he went to work for IBM.
Ten years later he was working as the
Director of IT for First America
Automotive. It was there that he met
Barbara. They both continued to work for
First America Automotive until Sonic
acquired the company and they moved to
Charlotte, North Carolina. Randy stayed
on with Sonic and Barb joined a Human
Resources out-sourcing company
functioning as an HR account manager to
a variety of companies in a variety of
business segments. Randy soon joined her
there in the IT department. In 2002 Barb
headed to Medford to work for Lithia
Motors and in keeping with tradition
Randy landed here several months later.
Since they began dating- Barb and Randy
have been employed by the same company,
virtually the entire time they have been
together.
I asked them about their positions. They
were both in agreement that working with
their individual teams is one of the best
parts of their jobs.
I asked about their proudest bucket list
moments or achievements… and what is
left to tackle. Once a full time career -now
an avocation-glass blowing is more than
just a hobby for Randy. Much of his art is
inspired by the garden that Barb creates
and tends. He had his own exhibit at the
Rogue Gallery and Art Center in May of
last year. Randy also makes his own cheese
and rustic breads. Barb brings the art of
small animal massage to the table. The
mastery of this calling stems from her love
for their dog Harris. Four years ago Harris
injured his ACL. Dumbfounded by the
lack of services for this invaluable benefit -
Barb sought education online. She
completed the pertinent courses and
received the two certifications necessary to
perform maintenance regimens,
pre-surgical and post-surgical massages. She
also administers hands-on therapy to
animals suffering from trauma which may
be physical or emotional. So what is left on
their bucket lists? Randy is looking forward
to his fly fishing trip to Kodiak Island in
September and someday Barb will be
hiking the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu in
Peru.
A fun fact about the Perkins, they
decorate the lions that stand sentinel at the
end of their driveway for holidays, seasons,
and football games.
