1993 - 94 DEGREE OPTIONS

BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN FORESTRY DEGREES

FOREST~~AGEMENT

.,.,.,.........,=---...... • The Forest Management Option provides broad general training that integrates the physical, biological and social sciences to manage complex forest ecosystems. While the multiple resources of forests are stressed, timber production within the context ofthe broader ecosystem receives more emphasis. Students are prepared for employment in a wide variety of private industries and government agencies that are responsible for providing both commodity and non-commodity goods, services and uses from forests.

FOREST PRODUCTS

Students in the Forest Products option are prepared to enter the wood-using industries. Knowledge about tree growth and the forest environment together with the knowledge of wood properties will help the student provide valuable wood products in the future. A ready job market awaits Forest Products graduates as log buyers and managers for sawmills and veneermills. The secondary wood-using industries also seek employees for furniture and panel manufacturing, and cabinetry and dimension millwork plants.

FOREST RECREATION

Forest recreation provides professional preparation for a person who wishes to be a forester with skill in planning, managing and interpreting natural resources for recreation. Students completing the program can be found working in many public agencies and private firms.

URBA~~ FORESTRY

Trees are an integral part of the urban ecosystem. Trees in city parks, medians, open spaces, green belts, treeways and roadsides are managed by municipal foresters. Privately owned trees in yards and around commercial buildings are cared for by commercial arborists. Commercial arborists may also contact to care for the city's trees. Trees under and around electrical conductors are managed by utility arborists. The urban forestry option prepares students to manage the urban tree resource.

INDIANA SAF HOSTS THE 1993 NATION.A.L CONVENTION John W. Moser, Jr.

On November 7, 1993, a dream became reality for the Indiana Society of American,

Foresters when 1200 foresters converged on Indianapolis. Hosting the 93rd National

SAF Convention was a first for ISAF.

"Foresters Together, Meeting Tomorrow's Challenge" was the theme; it evolved

from the profession's strong values for the land -and forests, from people's diverse

points of view concerning the forest, and from the need to meet present and future

challenges in resource management.

From the presentation of the colors to the Critical Issue Forum, I have difficulty

recalling any convention with such a high level of energy for the first day. Keynote

speaker Assistant Secretary of Agriculture Jim Lyons described his goal to increase

Forest Service credibility and to move forward with ecosystem management on the

National Forests. The general session speakers were timely and follo''l'ed through on

the convention theme.

A unique addition to the first day was the Seattle Public Theater's Midwest debut of

the play "Timber"; it was exceptional! The . play challenges all sides -

environmentalists, industry, labor and consumers --to balance their own interests

and to cooperatively work toward responsible natural resource policy; it was an ideal

lead for the Critical Issue Forum that focused on the Society's controversial Task

Force Report on Sustaining Long-term Forest Health and Productivity. The Forum

attracted a standing room only crowd to discuss their deeply held feelings and values,

the changing expectations that people have for forests, and a proposed new approach

to forestry.

The second. and third days of the convention focused on the acthities of the Forest

Science and Technology Board and the Working Groups; they did a fantastic job -

particularly with the new concurrent technical session format. There were over 30

papers in the working group sessions that focused on ecosystem management -- their

presentations could not have been more timely.

The Indianapolis Convention set an all time student participation record -- 225

students from across the country. It was particularly eventful for 25 members of the

Purdue Student Chapter. President Jane Difley presented SAF's Student

Publication Content first place award to the Purdue Log; Chad A'Hearn and Greg

Dahle received the award for 1993 co-editors Jennifer Boyle and Irene Crawford.

Jayson Waterman presided over the meeting of the National Student Assembly and

Dawn Winterhalter served as the group's secretary. Charles Leppert and his major

professor, Andrew Gillespie, received the Best Poster Award from the Remote

Sensing and Photogrammetry Working Group, and Shibu Jose and Andrew Gillespie

received the Best Student Poster Award. Additionally, Purdue students hosted the

Student Hospitality Suite and the Department's exhibit.

Purdue faculty and staff had major responsibilities in organizing and conducting the

convention. Burney Fischer served as General Chair and John Moser served as

Program Chair. Bill Hoover and W. L. Mills were, respectively, Activities Committee

Chair and Publicity Subcommittee Chair. Walt Beineke, Student Activities

Subcommittee Chair, organized a great Southern Indiana Forestry Tour to acquaint

students with hardwood nursery and genetic improvement operations, hardwood

management and one of the world's largest high-tech veneer mills. Jack Seifert,

Forester's Fund Chair, raised a record $20,000 through the traditional raffie and an

auction of Indiana fine hardwood furniture. Dennis Le Master moderated Tuesday

morning's general session and Brian Miller organized the Windbreak Technology

Working Group Tour. Bill Chaney's poster was selected the .Best Poster by the

Education and Communication Working Group.

A major convention highlight was Tuesday evening's "Hoosier Hospitality" at the

Indiana Roof Garden Ballroom with midwestern cuisine and entertainment by the

world renowned Purdue University Varsity Glee Club. Aaron Holsapple, a senior

forestry student, was one ofthe Club's featured singers. It was a memorable event!

:Many, many individuals attending this convention had nothing but high praise for the

program, the facilities, Indianapolis, and the Indiana SA.F's exceptional warmth and

hospitality. At the outset, our goal '!'\'as to bring the profession together to discuss

current resource issues and to set the stage for cooperative progress toward

responsible natural resource policy. Our goal was achieved --as SAF Executive Vice

President Bill Banzhaf stated, "This was truly a watershed event!"

XI SIGMA PI by John Parslow

Xi Sigma Pi is an international Forestry, Conservation and Wildlife Honor Fraternity. The fraternity was founded at the University of Washington in 1908. In 1934 Purdue was honored be being selected as the tenth chapter of Xi Sigma Pi. The fraternity honors students who not only excel in academic work but have strong professional ethics.

The arboretum located at Martell Forest is under the care ofthe chapter. This past year the silviculture students planted an acre of Douglas-fir at Martell for use as Christmas trees by the Forestry Council. Xi Sigma Pi will be in charge of pruning these trees and upkeep of the grounds. As an honors fraternity, Xi Sigma Pi believes that academic excellence is important and this is why we present the Outstanding Sophomore Award at the Spring Awards Banquet.

PURDUE RECREATION AND PARKS ASSOCIATION by April Dunne

Purdue Recreation and Parks Association emphasizes the value of public education, recreation and member participation. This last year we provided \Vestwood Guides, nature walks for children, and Camp Day 94. Both provide opportunities for meeting new people and job opportunities. Ten people experienced our backpacking trip in The Great Smoky Mountians National Park. Our main objectives are to provide service to the public, recreational opportunities for students and have lots of fun!

The Wildlife Societv "' by David \\'right

The Wildlife Society, founded in 1937, is an international nonprofit, scientific and educational organization dedicated to the wise management and consenration of the wildlife resources ofthe world.

The principal objectives ofthe Society are to develop and promote sound stewardship ofwildlife resources and ofthe environments upon which wildlife and humans depend, to increase awareness and appreciation ofwildlife values and to seek the highest standards in all activities of the wildlife profession. This is accomplished through many different events, activities, and social gatherings. Some of these include guest speakers, whose field is in the area ofwildlife, they are invited to talk about current issues or about research that they may be conducting. This allows an opportunity for students to learn about topics or issues that they may not have been aware of. The Society also attempts to maintain various committees that are formed to help benefit the local and regional area. Some of these include a wildlife, educational and events committee. These are formed to help improve wildlife habitat, help teach the younger generation about wise management, or to just enjoy a change of atmosphere with some friends.

This past year has been fun and a great learning experience for me. The opportunity to organize the events, meet new people, and learn information from the guest speakers was a challenge and rewarding experience. So do not pass up the opportunity to get involved and broaden you knowledge. Take care.

1993 MIDWESTERN FORESTERS' CONCLAVE

The 42nd annuall\tfidwestern Foresters' Conclave was held at the University of Minnesota on Lake Itasca. Conclave is the yearly gathering of modern day Paul Bunyan's, where they compete in such events as log rolling, buck saw, speed chop, compass and traverse and more. This year's competition began for Purdue on the drive up. We left late Thursday night with twenty of us piling in 4 vehicles for the long haul. It took 14 hours with pit stops every half hour. Once we arrived Friday the weather was wonderful and the scenery excellent. :Most of us despite being exhausted decided to enjoy our new surroundings. Friday evening we ordered pizza and then got into the spirit of conclave at the bon-fire with the seven other teams. Competition began early Saturday morning and lasted until the evening. The Purdue team was very enthusiastic and cheered each other on all day long. After all was said and done Purdue ended up in 4th place.
