LIMITED USE LICENSE AGREEMENT 1. License Under this license, the Customer is authorized to use the Licensed Program(s) in machine-readable form on all computer systems within the Customer's company. The Customer may not modify the Licensed Program(s) and/or modify the Licensed Program(s) with other programs. The licensed Program(s) may not be re-assigned, sub-licensed or transferred except as provided in this agreement. 2. Term This Agreement and license are effective from the date of receipt and shall remain in full force and effect until terminated. The Customer may terminate this Agreement and license by destroying all complete and partial copies of the Licensed Program(s) in its possession. 1.0 INTRODUCTION The TacoNet® Software has been developed to assist the design engineer in the selection and specification of pumps, heat exchangers and expansion tanks. The primary intent of the TacoNet® selection programs is to free the design engineer from the tedious task of making manual equipment selections and allow the design engineer to spend more time making design decisions. In the introduction, we provide a general overview of the program. In the remainder of this manual, we describe the program operation and data entry and reports. TacoNet® is straightforward and intuitive. Data is entered in response to questions or selections on a menu. A variety of time saving features are built into the program to help you breeze through data entry. At all times, context sensitive help is available at the bottom of each screen for each question. Version 7.0 of the TacoNet® software is designed to run on an IBM or compatible equipment running Windows 95 or later. The program is provided on one CD-ROM for easy installation. This section explains how to load the program on your hard disk and get started. 2.1 Installing and Starting the Program The TacoNet® program comes on one CD-ROM disk. To install TacoNet for Windows, please follow these instructions. INSTALLATION 1. Place the TacoNet® disk in the CD Drive. 2. To install the software, it is necessary to run the program SETUP.EXE from the root directory of the CD-ROM. This should be accomplished by using the RUN command from the Windows 95 (or later) Start Menu. 3. The installation program will create the necessary Program Objects or Shortcuts.

2.2 The Main Menu The TacoNet® Software begins with a Main Menu from which each of the individual Product Selection Programs can be accessed. In addition, the Main Menu can be configured to allow the user to access any other programs on their computer from the TacoNet® Main Menu. The following figure illustrates the Main Menu:

Each of the individual programs can be executed from the above Main Menu. In addition, the Main Menu illustrated above offers the options to automatically update the TacoNet Software over the Internet. The following section will describe the new Data Update feature available with TacoNet for Windows. Data Update Choosing the Data Update from the TacoNet for Windows Screen will present the following Window:

This Program will allow the user to connect to the TacoNet FTP Server to automatically update the installed version of TacoNet for Windows on their computer. Clicking on the Check for Update Button will cause the program to connect to the TacoNet FTP Server and perform a file comparison of all of the installed files to determine if any of the files have been updated on the FTP Server. If there are newer files on the FTP Server, those files (and only those files) will be updated on the TacoNet Installation.

Introduction: The Pump Selection Program has been developed to select a number of different pump alternatives based on specification restrictions placed on the selection by the user. Selections can be made based on the performance of pumps in systems handling water or other fluids commonly used for heat transfer in comfort HVAC applications. In addition to the general operating parameters that must be specified in order for the program to make a selection, the user can limit the possible alternatives by specifying the following:

• Pump Type • Operating Speed • Minimum Acceptable Pump Efficiency

Based on the operating conditions and design limitations, the selection program will select single or arrangements of two or three pumps in parallel that will meet the design criteria. The tabulated output from the Pump Selection Program includes the following:

• Pump Model Number • Impeller Diameter • Net Positive Suction Head Required • Motor RPM • Pump Efficiency (Single Pumps and Parallel Configurations) • Brake Horsepower • Non-Overloading Brake Horsepower (or BHP for single parallel pump operation)

The graphic output from the Pump Selection Program includes the following:

• Individual Pump Performance Curves • Flow vs. Head for Maximum Impeller Size • Flow vs. Head for Minimum Impeller Size • Flow vs. Head for Design Impeller Trim • BHP vs. Flow for Design Impeller • Efficiency vs. Flow for Design Impeller • NPSH vs. Flow for Design Impeller • System Resistance Curve • Design and Plus/Minus Deviation System Curves with Pump Flow vs. Head

While the remainder of this manual will discuss the use of the Pump Selection Program in detail, the easiest way to learn to use the program is to simply start the program and try making some sample selections. Operation: The Pump Selection Program is based on a single Input and Output screen that appears as follows when the program is started from the TacoNet for Windows Main Menu consisting for the following main sections:

Toolbar The Toolbar consists of the following options for the Pump Selection Program:

Single Pump Selection: Used to select the single pump selection option.

Two Pumps in Parallel: Used to select two pumps in parallel for application to a single system.

Three Pumps in Parallel: Used to select three pumps in parallel for application to a single system.

Capacity Check: Used to select the Capacity Check Selection Mode. Under the Capacity Check Selection mode, it is possible to check an existing pump to determine if it is capable of the performance required.

Calculate: Used to calculate the selections that meet the specified operating parameters. Clicking on this button after all performance parameters have been specified will select all appropriate pumps.

View/Print Curves: Generate performance curves to allow further evaluation of the selected Pumps.

Submittal Data Information: Generate Submittal Data Information on the pumps chosen from the list of pumps selected that meet the desired operating parameters.

Print Selections: Used to print the selection information for the pumps that meet the design conditions.

Schedule File: Used to access the Schedule File Capabilities of the Pump Selection Program. Schedule files can be created to contain all of the pumps selected for a project for later inclusion in the plans and specifications. Schedule files can be retrieved and modified (by adding or deleting products) or saved in a format compatible with AutoCAD drawings.

Reset Data: Removes all operating parameters and resets the selection options (pump type & motor information) to the startup default.

Load Data: Allows the user to load previously saved input data to re-run Pump Selections.

Save Data: Allows the user to save the input parameters currently specified for re-use. Input data is saved rather than output data to save space (with the appropriate input data, the output can be regenerated)

Units: Allows the user to specify the Units of Measure that will be used to specify input and output parameters.

Taco: Open the user’s default Web Browser to access a list of all Taco Representatives.

Exit: Used to close the Pump Selection Program and return to the TacoNet for Windows Main Menu.

Input Conditions The Input Conditions portion of the screen will vary depending on the selection mode chosen. The following section illustrates the Input Conditions for each Selection Mode. Pump Performance Correction for Fluids Other Than Water: The ability to specify Fluids other than Water has been added to Version 7. Clicking on the by the Fluids Description will reveal a list of all available fluids. In the event that the desired fluid is not present, the User can create any fluid desired by selecting the Edit Fluids Button that will open the Edit fluids Box illustrated at right.

The Input Conditions portion of the screen for a Single Pump Selection is shown at left. The only required input is Fluid, Flow and Head. With only fluid, flow & head specified, the Pump Selection Program has enough information to make a pump selection. All other input is used to limit the number of selections that will be displayed. Specifying Minimum Efficiency will limit the selections displayed to only those with efficiencies higher than the specified minimum.

The Pump Selection Program corrects pump performance for Specific Gravity effect only and not for viscosity. Over the normal range of operation on comfort hydronic HVAC Systems, the viscosity effect within the pump is negligible. However, the viscosity effect on the head loss in the piping system is significant. The actual head loss for the piping system for the fluid being pumped must be specified for the Pump Selection to be valid. If you have determined the system head loss using water tables, it will be necessary to recalculate the head loss using the actual fluid to be pumped. To address the head loss impact of fluids other than water, the Pump Selection Program includes a Head Loss Estimator Program that can be accessed by selecting the Calculator symbol beside the Head Input Blank. The Heat Loss Estimator Program illustrated below will allow the user to use any fluid in the Pump Selection Program (or created in it) to calculate the head loss in a hydronic system. The User can build up the hydronic piping system piece by piece and estimate the head loss in the system with the fluid actually to be pumped in the system.

At right is the Input Conditions portion of the screen for selecting two pumps in parallel. For two pumps in parallel the input required is the Fluid, Flow Rate (combined flow rate of the two pump set), Head and flow split between the two pumps. Note that the split between the two pumps is forced to total 100% of the combined flow. Any desired safety factor must be included in the total flow. Again, Minimum Efficiency can be specified to limit the number of selections displayed for further consideration.

For three pumps in parallel the input required is the Fluid, Flow Rate (combined flow rate of the two pump set), Head and flow split between the three pumps. At right is the Input Conditions portion of the screen for the Capacity Check Mode. This selection mode is useful to determine if an existing pump will meet a given set of operating conditions. The required input is the Fluid, Desired Flow Rate and Head as well as the Pump Model Number (the pump type is specified in the Pump Type Portion of the screen (described below)

Pump Type The Pump Type Input (illustrated at right) allows the user to specify the Pump Type/Types that they wish to consider in the selection process. When the Pump Selection Program starts, the Pump Type option defaults to consider All pump types. Pump Types are selected by clicking on the appropriate box. All Pump Types checked will be considered in the selection process and the selections available will be displayed in the Selections Window.

Motor Input

The only Motor Information necessary to select a pump is the Motor Speed that is specified by selecting the electrical frequency (50/60 Hz) and then checking all operating speeds at that frequency that should be considered in the selection process. When the Pump Selection Program starts, the Motor Information defaults to 60 cycle and all speeds as illustrated at left.

Selection Results After the Fluid, Flow & Head information has been entered (along with any other limitations that the user wishes to impose), the selection process is completed by pressing the Calculate button on the toolbar. The selection results will vary depending on the selection mode chosen and the pump type(s) selected. The following illustrates the appearance of the Selection Results for the different selection modes: Single Pump Selection

In general, the following information will be shown for each pump selected that meets the specified performance criteria:

• Pump Model • Impeller Diameter (in.) at design conditions • NPSH (Net Positive Suction Head Required at pump inlet) • Motor RPM • Efficiency • Brake Horsepower (at the design point) • Non-Overloading BHP • Suction and Discharge connection size

For Single Pump Selections, all selections that meet the performance criteria are displayed as soon as the program finishes make the selection calculations. For Parallel Pump Selections, only one pump is displayed for each pump (P-1, P-2 & P-3). To choose a selection for further analysis, open the Selection Window by clicking on the

on the right side of the selection line, and click on the desired pump.

Further Selection Analysis To illustrate the further analysis tools that are available in the Pump Selection Program, the following selection example will be used:

• Flow: 400 GPM • Head: 100 Ft • Frame Mounted End Suction Pumps Only: FE • Motor: 60 Cycle at 1750 RPM

The following picture illustrates the above selection:

In our example, we will select the model FE3010 because it has the highest efficiency at the design point. Print Selections After the Pump Selection Program has calculated all pumps that will meet the desired condition, clicking on the print selections button will allow the user to print the tabular information on the pumps selected.

View/Print Pump Curves After the user has selected a unit for application or further analysis, the user can view the performance curve for any of the pumps selected simply by choosing the View/Print Curves Button from the Toolbar. The following Pump Curves window will be presented:

When the Pump Selection Program generates performance curves, it calculates the performance curve for the individual pump being evaluated as well as a system resistance curve that can be used to evaluate the pump selection based on variations in the design head. The window at left provides an option to provide additional system information that will be used to calculate and plot the system curve.

Selecting the Variable Speed Graphs option from the above Pump Curves Dialog Box will allow the user to specify the variable speed characteristics to be displayed in the printed curves. The User has the option to specify certain speeds to be printed (User defined speeds), or by selecting the Calculated Speeds option, the user can specify the minimum speed and the number of speed curves, and the program will calculate an even distribution of speed curves throughout the range. The System Control Pressure can be used to specify a pressure in the piping system that will be maintained by the control system. This will allow the software to display a system modulation curve that will track the way the system will respond to the controller. After specifying the System Static Head and the Deviation from design head and clicking OK, the Pump Performance curve will be displayed. The Pump Curve indicates the following information graphically:

• A plot of flow vs. head for the maximum impeller available for the particular pump model.

• A plot of flow vs. head for the minimum impeller available for the particular pump model.

• A plot of flow vs. head for the actual impeller trim required for the design conditions with the design flow and head plotted on the performance curve.

• A plot of brake horsepower vs. flow for the pump at the required impeller trim. • A plot of efficiency vs. flow for the pump with the required impeller trim. • A plot of NPSH vs. flow for the pump with the required impeller trim.

The above Screen includes a Toolbar at the top to aid in analyzing the Pump Performance Curves. The toolbar is as follows:

The following is a brief explanation of the Toolbar Options:

Scroll Tool: Allows the user to scroll between the various curves available for analysis.

Print Single/All: Allows the User to print a single curve or to print all curves.

View Pages: Allows the User to select between a view that fits the whole

curve on the screen or fits the page to the width of the screen.

Curve List : The drop down menu at left is available in the Pump Curve Toolbar to allow the user to select a specific curve to view from a list of available curves instead of using the View Pages Buttons from the Toolbar.

Exit : Allows the user to exit from the Performance Curve analysis and return the input/output window of the Pump Selection Program.

Further analysis of the chosen unit can be conducted by selecting the System Resistance Curve option. The following curve illustrates the system resistance curve for the FE3010 Pump used thus far in the single pump selection example assuming a 25% deviation in design head:

The System Resistance Curve is very helpful in analyzing the impact of unexpected variations in the design system head on pump performance. In the above example, a variation of +/- 25% in the design system head results in a variation of approximately 10% in flow and 5% in Brake Horsepower.

Variable speed pump curves can be generated either by the user specifying the speeds they wish to see or by specifying the minimum speed and the number of intermediate curves and letting the software determine the speeds to be plotted. Illustrated at right is the input to generate a variable speed performance curve for the above pump with a control point at 25 Ft, and speeds of 900, 1200, 1500 and 1760 RPM.

Schedule File Option After the performance curves have been used to thoroughly analyze the selection options and the optimum pump selection has been made, the various pump selections for a given project can be saved to a schedule file. Clicking on the Schedule Files Button on the Toolbar will bring up the following window (the first time):

If the user has previously created any Schedule Files, the last file created will appear by default in the Job Files Box. The toolbar presented at the top of the Submittal Data Preview window is virtually identical to the toolbar for the Pump Curve Preview window. The User can zoom in and out on the Submittal Data Sheet, switch between views, view other Submittal Data Sheets generated and print one or all of the submittal data sheets. The Submittal Data Sheet generated by the Pump Selection Program will be identical to the Submittal Data Sheet printed and distributed by Taco. The Submittal Data Sheet Number will be the same as the pre-printed form but will have a “T” appended to it to indicate that TacoNet generated it. Units The Units Option from the Main Pump Selection Program Input Window can be used to configure the units of measure that are to be used in the selection and analysis of the various pump options. The Pump Selection Program is configured with US (English Units) and SI (System International Units). However, if desired, any system of units can be created for use in specifying input parameters and performance results. Clicking the “New” Button on the I/O Units dialog box will allow the user to create a new system of units. To create a system of units, it is necessary to specify the following information:

• Group Name • Flow Abbreviation • Flow Conversion • Head Abbreviation • Head Conversion • Power Abbreviation • Power Conversion • Dimensions

All calculations in the TacoNet Software are conducted in English units and then the output is corrected to the units of measure defined using the Units Option. For example, assume one wished to create a system of units with the following characteristics:

The critical factor in defining a new set of units is the conversion factors to be used. The easiest way to understand the conversion factors is to realize that the conversion factor is the number that if multiplied by the new units will result in the standard English Unit of measure. For example, multiplying Cubic-In/Hr by 1386 will result in Gallons per Minute (GPM). Exit Program This option will end the execution of the program. Capacity Check: The Toolbar Button at left is used to select the Capacity Check Selection Mode. Under the Capacity Check mode, it is possible to check an existing heat exchanger to determine if it is capable of the performance required.

Load Data: The Toolbar Button at left allows the user to load previously saved input data to re-run Heat Exchanger Selections.

Save Data: The Toolbar Button at left allows the user to save the input parameters currently specified for re-use. Input data is saved rather than output data to save space (with the appropriate input data, the output can be regenerated).

Reset Data: The Toolbar Button at left removes all Operating Parameters and resets the selection options to the startup default.

Calculate: The Toolbar Button at left is used to calculate the selections that meet the specified operating parameters. Clicking on this button after all performance parameters have been specified will select all appropriate heat exchangers.

Schedule File: The Toolbar Button at left is used to access the Schedule File Capabilities of the Heat Exchanger Selection Program. Schedule files can be created to contain all of the Heat Exchangers selected for a project for later inclusion in the plans and specifications. Schedule files can be retrieved and modified (by adding or deleting products) or saved in a format compatible with AutoCAD drawings.

Print Selections: The Toolbar Button at left is used to print the selection information for the heat exchangers that meet the design conditions.

Submittal Data Information: The Toolbar Button at left is used to generate Submittal Data Information on the Heat Exchangers Chosen from the list of Heat Exchangers Selected that meet the desired operating Parameters.

Units: The Toolbar Button at left allows the user to specify the Units of Measure that will be used to specify input and output parameters. The Heat Exchanger Selection Program offers the options of either U.S. (English) or SI (System International) Units.

Taco: Open the user’s default Web Browser to access a list of all Taco Representatives.

Input Conditions The input Conditions portion of the screen will vary depending on the selection mode chosen. The following illustrates the Input Conditions for the New Unit Selection Mode:

The fluid to fluid heat exchanger selection program will select alternative units based on fluids consisting of water and various concentrations of ethylene and propylene glycol or selected other fluids. As with all input screens and fields in the TacoNet® selection programs, a prompt will appear at the mouse as it travels over the various input fields that will provide the user with information regarding the input that is expected for the various fields on the screen. The following is a brief discussion of the various information required to make selections: TUBESIDE & SHELLSIDE CONDITIONS Fluid: The Heat Exchanger selection program allows the user to specify the type of fluid used in the hydronic system. The following fluid selections are available for application to the tubeside:

The Fluid Options change slightly on the Shellside due to the inclusion of steam as a possible fluid type. If steam is selected as the shellside fluid, the user will be asked to provide the steam pressure in psig and possibly the saturated steam temperature (if the steam pressure specified is not available in the steam tables included in the program source code).

After the appropriate fluid type is selected, additional information on concentration may be requested (if applicable).

NOTE: For Heat Exchanger selections, only five of the following six conditions must be specified:

• Tubeside Flow Rate • Shellside Flow Rate • Tubeside Entering Temp. • Shellside Entering Temp. • Tubeside Leaving Temp. • Shellside Leaving Temp.

With five of the above conditions, the selection program will balance the loads and determine the sixth. Flow Rate (gpm) Flow rate of the fluid in gallons per minute through either the tube or the shell of the heat exchanger. The maximum allowable Flow Rate through the tubes is 6100 GPM. The maximum allowable Flow Rate through the shell is 1750 GPM. Entering Temp. (°F) The maximum allowable temperature is 380 degrees F. Leaving Temp. (°F) The maximum allowable temperature is 380 degrees F. Fouling Factor For Heat Exchanger selections, the user can specify the fouling factor to be used for both the tubeside and the shellside. The acceptable range for the selection program is 0 to 0.1. For additional guidance in specifying fouling factor, clicking on the drop down menu beside the Fouling Factor blank without entering anything in this field will present the following table of typical fouling factors:

Max Velocity (fps) If the user wishes to limit the maximum allowable velocity in either the tubes or the shell, this field will accommodate this restriction. The program has built-in limits of 7.5 feet per second on the tubeside and 4.0 feet per second on the shellside. The program will default to these values if nothing is entered in these fields. Max Pressure Drop(ft.) Provides the user with the ability to specify the maximum allowable pressure drop in feet through both the tubes and the shell. The program will default to 25 feet if nothing is entered. Steam Pressure In the event that steam is selected as the Shellside Fluid Type, the user must specify the steam pressure in PSI entering the shellside of the heat exchanger. The characteristics of steam are stored internally in the program. ASME Rating: Selection of this option will present the user with the optional ASME Ratings (at right) from which to choose:

The user can specify the maximum length unit that should be considered acceptable. The length should be specified in feet. The maximum length units that can be selected by this program is 10 feet. The program will default to 10 feet. Number of Passes: The Heat Exchanger Selection program allows the user to limit the possible selections considered by specifying the unit configuration in terms of number of passes. Selecting this option will present the drop down menu below from which to choose the number of passes:

Tube Material Type: The final option in specifying unit performance and configuration is to select the desired tubing material from the following table:

Make Selections After all fields of the screen have been completed selecting the Calculate Button from the Toolbar will cause the program to proceed to balance the tubeside and shell side loads (or calculate and compare them if all six parameters were specified). The program will then make equipment selections based on the selection parameters entered by the user. Below is an illustration of a typical selection output window portion of the Heat Exchanger Selection Program:

The above output information is located directly below the input conditions and provides a listing of all units that will meet the design conditions. This will allow the user to compare different units and choose the optimum selection for the given parameters. Fluid Type: Clicking on the Fluid Type Drop Down Menu will allow the User to make Expansion Tank Selections based on the Fluid Types at right.

Selecting either Ethylene Glycol or Propylene Glycol will bring up the dialog box illustrated at left into which the user can enter the concentration of Glycol present.

Pipe Material: Clicking on the Pipe Material Drop Down Menu will allow the User to specify either Copper or Steel Pipe for the system being sized. System Volume (gal) Enter the total volume of fluid in the system. The total system volume should include the amount of fluid in the piping system (including all valves and fittings) as well as in the pumps and other equipment in the system. Minimum of Initial Fill or Operating Temperature (°F) Enter the minimum of either the initial fill temperature or the minimum expected operating temperature. This temperature will be used to establish the lower level of the operating range for which the expansion of the system fluid is calculated. As such, it should be the lowest temperature that the system will ever be expected to see. For example, in a heating system, the minimum temperature will probably be the temperature of the water when the system is filled (approximately 50-55°F). In a chilled water system, the minimum temperature will probably be experienced while the system is operating and will be equal to the design temperature leaving the chiller. The allowable range for this value is 40.0 to 240.0 °F. Maximum Design Temperature (°F) Enter the maximum expected system temperature. This temperature will be used to establish the highest level of the operating range for which the expansion of the

In a chilled water system, the maximum temperature will probably be experienced on a hot summer day when the system is down for maintenance and the ambient temperature causes the system fluid temperature to rise. The allowable range for this value is 40.0 to 240.0 °F. Minimum of Initial Fill or Operating Pressure (psig) Enter the minimum of either the initial fill pressure or the system operating pressure. The allowable range for this value is 0.0 to 250.0 psig). Maximum Design Pressure (psig) Enter the maximum expected system pressure. The allowable range for this value is 0.0 to 250.0 psig. Specific Volume of Fluid at Minimum Temperature: Enter the Specific Volume of the Fluid at the Minimum System Temperature. The value of this field will be calculated for all fluids available in the Fluids Drop Down Box except “Other”. If an Expansion Tank Selection is desired for a fluid other than those listed in the Fluids Drop Down Box, the Specific Volume of the Fluid must be provided at the Minimum System Temperature. Specific Volume of Fluid at Maximum Temperature: Enter the Specific Volume of the Fluid at the Maximum System Temperature. The value of this field will be calculated for all fluids available in the Fluids Drop Down Box except “Other”. If an Expansion Tank Selection is desired for a fluid other than those listed in the Fluids Drop Down Box, the Specific Volume of the Fluid must be provided at the Maximum System Temperature.

For any set of selection parameters, all Expansion Tank Types that meet the performance criteria will be selected. As indicated above, the following information will be presented for each type of Expansion Tank that meet the input parameters specified:

• Qty: Large Systems may require multiple Expansion Tanks to accommodate the Expansion Volume in conjunction with the required Operating Pressures.
