GET STARTED AT TAFE QUEENSLAND
TAFE Queensland is the largest and most experienced provider of vocational education and training in the state. It’s a big statement, but one that’s backed by research and confirms our impressive track record. We’ve been in the business of training for more than 130 years and have trained more than seven million people.
At last count, we had more students than all the Queensland universities combined. TAFE Queensland’s award-winning teachers, purpose-built facilities and strong industry partnerships will help you get the real-world skills that you need to achieve your future career or study goals. We’ve got over 200 practical and nationally recognised qualifications for you to choose from and hundreds of university pathways to compliment and extend all of our TAFE at School courses.
GET A HEAD START WITH A TAFE AT SCHOOL COURSE
If you are a year 11 or 12 student then you’re eligible to participate in the TAFE at School program. You can choose to study from over 20 exciting and varied certificate II or III level vocational education and training (VET) courses. Best of all, a TAFE at School certificate can be achieved in conjunction with your senior studies and count towards your Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE).
TAFE AT SCHOOL IS A GREAT WAY TO: . get a qualification while still at school
. gain direct entry into our diploma courses
. gain valuable credit points towards your QCE
. gain credits towards a diploma course or university studies
. make you work ready
. build practical skills in an adult learning environment
. learn from professionals, bursting with current
industry knowledge.
WHAT DOES IT COST?
Costs vary from course to course, and these prices are identified throughout this guide. If you are undertaking a certificate II qualification as part of your senior studies you may pay reduced or, in some cases, no tuition fees at all. If you choose to study a certificate III program you will incur fees. You will need to reenrol in your program at the commencement of each semester of study. As an international student you will be required to pay a slightly different fee. A schedule of fees is available upon request.
PAYMENT OPTIONS
Payment plans may be available, however students under 18 will need a guarantor. Applications will be subject to credit checks.
STUDENT SUPPORT
At TAFE Queensland we aim to create a supportive and inclusive learning environment to help you achieve your study goals. To help you on your journey, your school, through their student assistance programs, have the responsibility of ensuring that you receive appropriate levels of support while you are participating in the TAFE environment.
MORE INFORMATION
Apprenticeship and traineeships
TAFE Queensland also offers both school-based apprenticeships and traineeships, which can not only get you work-ready, but a step ahead of your peers. Becoming a schoolbased apprentice or trainee gets you trained in a vocation or trade and allows you to earn money while you’re still at school. An apprenticeship arms you with the specific skills needed to become a qualified tradesperson. Apprenticeships can take up to four years to complete. On the other hand, trainees are trained in a vocational area, such as animal studies or vet nursing. As a trainee you’ll work towards a minimum of a certificate level II in your chosen area. Traineeships can take between 12 months to three years to complete.
If this sounds like something you’re interested in, then visit tafeqld.edu.au to find out more.
It’s got all the information you need to know about the apprenticeship and traineeship courses that we offer. Once you know what course you’re interested in, you simply need to visit australianapprenticeships.gov.au or call 1800 210 210 for tips on securing employment as an apprentice or trainee.
Your school Guidance Officer, VET Coordinator or Head of Senior Schooling can also help get you started and assist you in finding an employer. Once you have an employer and secured an apprenticeship or traineeship, just let them know that you want to study with us. Best of all, school-based apprentices and trainees do not pay fees for training at TAFE Queensland. However, you may need to pay some costs for tools and compulsory protective equipment, which we will outline upon enrolment. If you require further information, please contact your Guidance Officer, VET Coordinator or Head of Senior Schooling.

“I started working a couple of days a week to get a feel for the trade. It was challenging but that’s what I loved about it and it wasn’t long before the owner of the company offered me an apprenticeship and I said yes. Without my apprenticeship training I wouldn’t have the technical proficiency skillsets, self-confidence and belief in my abilities to accomplish things like this.”
