Hiring an apprentice/trainee is the single best way to get your workforce skilled and qualified

No matter what industry you are in, investing in training through hiring an apprentice or trainee provides your business with real benefits and contributes to your bottom line.

• Hiring an apprentice/trainee is a cost-effective way to get additional help for your business.

• Combines training and paid employment – your apprentice/trainee will learn on the job.

• Incentives, grants and bonuses are available which can negate the cost of employing an apprentice/trainee (see page 4).

• Apprenticeships/traineeships are designed to be flexible and meet the individual needs of different businesses.

• Apprentices/trainees spend the majority of their time working for you at your business; training options may include online, in the workplace or in the classroom.

• You can choose from school students, school leavers, career changers, or mature-aged apprentices/trainees to suit the needs of your business.

• Training achieves nationally recognised qualifications developed by industry.

• Future-proof your industry by developing the skills of younger workers.

The Queensland State Training Authority partially funds the training and assessment for selected apprenticeship and traineeship programs. To find out what funding is available to you and your business and how to apply, phone us today for a chat, or visit the Australian Apprenticeships website.

For apprentice/trainee wage and award details and employment conditions information, visit the Fair Work Ombudsman website.

COSTS AND INCENTIVES

The Federal Government provides funding to employers who train and upskill their workforce. In many cases, these grants and incentives will assist in covering the cost of training your apprentice/trainee.

TAFE Queensland training for eligible apprentices/trainees is undertaken at a fee of $1.60 per nominal hour. Nominal hours for each unit will be outlined in the training plan, and will be agreed to prior to the commencement of training. Apprentices/trainees not eligible for funding will be charged a fee for service cost.

HIRING AN APPRENTICE/TRAINEE

POINTS TO CONSIDER:

In order to get the most out of your apprentice/trainee, it is important to understand your business needs. Please contact your local TAFE Queensland team if you would like to discuss how hiring an apprentice/trainee could help or impact your business. A few questions to consider:

• What skills does your business need?

• What area of your business will the apprentice/trainee work in?

• What will the job involve?

• Would you want a full-time or part-time apprentice/trainee?

• Do you have skilled staff to supervise/train the employee?

• Can you offer a variety of work/skills to help your apprentice or trainee fulfil their potential?

WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN AN APPRENTICE/TRAINEE

When hiring any new employee, it is important that you find someone who is a suitable match for your business. A few attributes of a good apprentice/ trainee are:

• Eager to learn and a positive attitude

• Asks questions to grow their skills

• Takes initiative and shows interest

• Knows how to get along with others

• Listens and follows direction

• Good communication skills

• Trustworthy and responsible

• Views their apprenticeship/traineeship as ‘a career move’ rather than ‘just for now’.

HOW TO FIND AN APPRENTICE TAFE Queensland can help you to find the right match. We have job-ready candidates who have completed basic workplace training with us (including prevocational courses and occupational health and safety training) who are motivated to gain employment.

It’s easy and completely free. All you need to do is register your interest and we will contact you with a list of suitable applicants.

GETTING STARTED

TRAINING CONTRACT

The most important step in hiring an apprentice/trainee is for you and your apprentice/trainee to sign a training contract. To do this you will need to contact an Apprenticeship Network Provider (ANP). ANPs are a free service to make it easier for employers to recruit, train and retain an apprentice/trainee. They will also provide funding advice and administrative support throughout the process.

CHOOSING YOUR TRAINING PROVIDER

Once you have signed the contract and chosen TAFE Queensland as your training provider, we are notified by your chosen ANP and will contact you within 48hrs to organise an onsite or phone induction. We’ll discuss things like the training plan, what training options are available, how to complete the Training Record and other information like fees, student rules and employer obligations.

GET TRAINING!

Once the induction has taken place, we can get down to the bit we love - training. Training for your apprentice/trainee can start in as little as two weeks after the induction, or we can commence the training based on what works for you and your apprentice/trainee.

Why wait to make great? Contact your local TAFE Queensland team on 1300 782 555 for a training solution to suit your business.
