Taiwan, Formosa An Island Filled with Beautiful Scenery and Friendly People
Taiwan, an area of less than 36,000 km2, is home to abundant natural resources and cultures. The country has complex and diverse
topography, including high mountains, hills, plains, basins, islands, rift valleys, and coastlines. The tropic of Cancer spans across the island, endowing Taiwan with various natural tropical, subtropical, and temperate zone ecology.
Minnan, Hakka, aboriginal, and other Chinese cultures are all woven together into a rich cultural fabric. The resulting culinary culture—encompassing Taiwanese, Hakka, Hunan, Sichuan, Japanese, and Korean cuisines, along with traditional snacks and local specialties—has earned Taiwan the reputation as a gourmet kingdom.
National Palace Museum is one of the world's largest museums, and there are many more unique museums to check out. Festivals and customs such as the annual Mazu processions, Lantern Festival, Aboriginal Harvest Festivals, Ho-hai-yan Rock Festival, and New Year fireworks should not be missed.
Taiwan offers convenient public transportation that lets you travel from the south to the north in just a few hours to experience entirely different customs and flavors. In the 2016 Taiwan Tourism Coupon Guide Book, we have collected even more valuable sightseeing information and coupons, allowing you to easily visit each spot and enjoy Taiwan the way you imagined it. Someone once said, "The people are the most beautiful sight in Taiwan." Through this guide book, you will be able to fully experience that the beautiful scenery and food of our beautiful island are as charming as the people who live here.

Dur ing the Qing per iod , Lugang in Changhua grew to
become the main city in central Taiwan, leading to the saying: “first Tainan, second Lugang, third Taipei’s Mengjia (Wanhua) district.” Changhua was settled largely by immigrants from the Chinese provinces of Fujian and Guangdong. These settlers brought with them their unique customs and culture, evident today in the many colorful historic sites found throughout the county. These includes Changhua’s landmark Baguashan Great Buddha; Longshan Temple, a national historic site known as “Taiwan’s Forbidden City”; and Tianhou Temple, a county historic site dedicated to Meizhou’s Mazu.
Yunl in generates more revenue from agriculture than any other county. Seasonal harvest schedule includes rice and soy bean sauce from Xiluo; pomelos from Douliu; peanuts from Beigang; coffee from Gukeng , and more from farmsthroughout the county. Yunlin’ssimilarly advanced aquaculture industry raises significant quantities of grouper, milkfish, mullet roe, geloina (horseshoe) clam, and tilapia. In addition, Yunlin also has the highest concentration oftemples on the island; among all, the 290-year-old Beigang Chaotian Temple, built in the Qing Dynasty, has been the most renowned one.

Chiayi CityChiayi City is situated on the nor th end of Chianan Plain, bordered by Chiayi County. At 23.5o north latitude, the Tropic of Cancer passes just 1km south of Chiayi City. The city has been the county seat from the earliest days and thus an origin of culture and the arts, including koji pottery, one of the most precious traditional craft skills in Taiwan.
Chiayi CountyBlessed by both mountain and coastal scenery, the county is home to the Alishan, Southwest Coast, and Siraya National Scenic Areas and the only one county in Taiwan to have three national scenic areas.
Tainan CityTainan is the bir thplace of Taiwan and the oldest city on the island. In 1661, the Ming loyalist Cheng Cheng-kung drove the Dutch from Taiwan and established his administration in Tainan. Tainan remained the political, economic and cultural center of Taiwan up to the late nineteenth century. As a result, Tainan is home to many famous historic sites.
Kaohsiung CityA thriving international metropolis at the southern tip of Taiwan, Kaohsiung was the host city for the 2009 World Games. Due to the regulating effects of the marine climate, Kaohsiung is generally sunny and enjoys pleasant weather year-round, and earns the name of “Taiwan’s Maritime Capital.”
Pingtung CountyTaiwan’s southernmost county, Pingtung covers a long territory with a border defined by mountains to the north, the Pacific Ocean to the east, the Taiwan Strait to the west, and the Bashi Channel to the south. Due to its subtropical location, Pingtung enjoys springlike weather all year round. Graceful coconut trees add to the county’s ample South Pacif ic charms. In addition, Pingtung is home to Kenting National Park, Taiwan’s first National Park.
