After a fantastic, thrilling performance by the
British Olympic Team and a stirring and imaginative
Olympics opening ceremony - Take Art aims to
follow in their legacy of hope and participation
in Somerset.
As we know, it’s not just sport that plays an
important and critical role in the well being of the
nation, the arts also have incredible transformative
powers. Our role in Somerset is to promote the
very best of the arts in the county and encourage
each and every person to watch, participate and
strive to reach their potential.
In this spirit of positivity we are launching our
‘Don’t Take Art Away’ fundraising campaign
(see page 12), determined to secure the resources
needed to deliver a stimulating and far-reaching
programme of work over the coming year.
Our Live programme working with 40 plus villages is
going to retain its much loved quality and courage
and this Autumn will be supplemented by our
international KinderGardens Festival for under 5s
and their families. We are excited that international
company Teatro Paraiso, based in la Coruna in
Northern Spain, will be premiering their new show
Kubik. They will be performing alongside Théâtre
de la Guimbarde from Belgium and home grown
companies, Little Angel Theatre and Core Dance.
Complementing Life Circles, our dance project
with the frail elderly, we will be focusing on schools
work with young people in both dance and theatre.
We are also hoping to deliver a music project with
the Pupil Referral Units across Somerset with Youth
Music support.
These and other projects demonstrate our ambition
to be a vital part of the arts ecology in Somerset
and the South West.

Birdhouse Jammy Voo
“I took off my hat and put it in the cage, and I left with a bird on my head” Jacques Prevert
This latest production from the wonderfully anarchic Jammy Voo is inspired by Hitchcock’s chilling classic 1960s horror The Birds, told through a theatrical lens of dark clowning (the stories you don’t tell your children at night), enthralling puppetry and an original live music score. Four very funny women, survivors of the ‘bird apocalypse’ treat us to their surreal and ever so slightly mad world of comedy horror.
Birdhouse has a fantastic creative team, it was developed by Jos Houben (Theatre de Complicite), Peta Lily and Omar Elerian, with gorgeous live music by Greg Hall. Take Art are big supporters of Jammy Voo and we are very exciting to see this freaky fantastic piece arrive in Somerset.

Osiligi Maasai Warriors
Music and dance from the other side of the world
The Osiligi Maasai Warriors make a trip to Somerset from Kenya to present a very special concert, featuring authentic music, song and ‘jumping’ dance, as well as fascinating information about their life, culture and village communities.
This incredible musical foray is followed by a Q&A session, awakening hearts and cultural curiosity and adding a lively and interesting end to the evening.
The show will delight all ages from 5-95 and is presented in two halves, with the interval providing a rare opportunity for the group to chat with audience members and sell authentic beadwork made by their families.
All proceeds from the show will go to help the warriors’ families in Kenya and towards the
improvement of their village back home.

So if you want to know what happened when Harry Potter discovered he had a twin called Larry? Or when Charlie built his own Chocolate Factory… nowyoucanfindout.
Kepow are one of the UK’s funniest, most creative theatre companies, who have created this improvised theatre show suitable for 5-11 yr olds and playful grown-ups.

Seven Ages Kepow Theatre
A comedy for all the ages
Following a sell out world tour to Canada, US, New Zealand and Hong Kong, Kepow Theatre present an ideal show for all ages, exploring the seven stages of life as proffered by Shakespeare, the world’s most famous ever bard.
From infancy, through love and wisdom to growing old disgracefully, Seven Ages seeks to explore two of the most important questions in existence, ‘why am I here and what’s important in my life?’
Essentially a comedy, with touching moments, Seven Ages premiered at the Edinburgh Festival 2010 and earned 5 star reviews, had a sell-out run and then transferred to London’s West End. Kepow are often said to be the funniest theatre company on the rural touring circuit.
“Heart warming comedy-theatre that all the family can, and certainly will, enjoy!” Evening Standard

Charles Dickens Pip Utton
A masterful performance, Pip Utton IS Charles Dickens
Charles Dickens, the great English novelist, the most famous man of his generation, staggers on to the stage, clutches his chest, slips from his sister in law’s arms and falls down dead. Seconds later he leaps up to entertain his audience – his ‘circle of affectionate friends’.
With his death got out of the way right at the start, he feels that he can now approach the rest of the evening with energy and enthusiasm. This is not the dark, grave and serious Dickens of myth but a
manfullofenergy, passionandfire.Attheendofthe evening you will have been richly entertained and feel as if you have actually spent time with Charles Dickens.
“Real emotional tangibility in the performance and the feeling that I have now met with Dickens, I would recommend this outstanding piece of theatre to anyone” Fringereview.com

John Kirkpatrick takes a profound look at the powerful pagan urges that race through us at this time of year. He peels away the modern soppy and sentimental view of Christmas to reveal the life and death struggle symbolised in so many traditional songs and customs, all dressed up in the glittering fineryoftoetappingtunesandcrackingchoruses.
Add to the mixture a light hearted smattering of hilarious original songs and a sprinkling of carols both familiar and unfamiliar, all stirred up with John’s usual panache and energy and supported by his scintillating skill on a variety of squeeze-boxes. The result is an unbeatable recipe for a rattling good sing song, guaranteed to keep the spirits cheery on a wintery day.

Sept-Dec 2012 | Take Art
Take Art has been working, singing and doing the
splits in Somerset for 25 years, long enough to
build real relationships with communities, artists
and audiences. We are an arts organisation without
physicallimitations:lithe,sinewy,adaptableand
transmutable, able to shape shift into any venue,
village hall, school and community centre.
From our hub in South Petherton we run one of
the UK’s most celebrated rural touring schemes
and services in dance, theatre, music and early
years creativity.
Every year we provide performance and workshop
opportunities for thousands of children, young
people, adults, older people and vulnerable groups.
Through our work we seek to educate, inform
national practice, improve self-esteem, empower,
build empathy, careers, happiness as well as
physical and mental well-being.
We don’t wait for the people to come to us, we go
out to where the people live and transform lives
and communities through the arts.
Last year the region lost 100% of its County
Council arts development funding - the worst arts
funding cuts in the UK. To compound the crisis
tens of thousands of arts designated pounds were
stripped from District Council funds. This loss was
pretty devastating to our vital work and we had to
cut our rural touring programme in half, going from
120 shows a year to less than 60.
Fortunately thanks to continuing support from
Arts Council England as well as South Somerset
District Council, Taunton Deane District Council
and ArtLife, Take Art is still here, alive, acting and
reacting, doing fantastic work in dance, theatre,
early years, rural touring and music.

Lightstream
An interactive light and sound installation for young children
Colourful lights drift and collide across the large
screen as if carried on a current of air. Bubbles of
colour merge to create bigger bubbles and new
colours. Objects become visible, transform and
then vanish. Simple forms appear to duplicate
themselves to reveal repetitive patterns of colour
and shape.
Children control the visual events by making a
noise, clapping their hands, playing a drum or
singing a note.

Shapes n Shadows Core Dance For 2-4 yr olds and their families
A dance created for young children, to engage
them in the shapes and shadows of our natural
world. Using light and materials, a dancer plays
with opposites, dark and light, hard and soft and
like a puppeteer, presents images from our world.
This is a beautiful dance piece based around
light, shadows and natural materials with a
lovely interactive play session following the
performance.

The Big Jump/Le Grand Saut Théâtre de la Guimbarde For 18 months-4 yr olds and their families
Two characters go on a voyage of discovery in
a building site inhabited by unusual objects and
sounds. In this playground, they construct and
deconstruct, plunge into materials and sounds,
experiment like scientists.
Driven by curiosity, they stick their noses into
plaster, make music with the scaffolding, stack up
bricks, send water and sand down the pipes and
end their adventures with a big jump!

The Take Art Seed Fund
Take Art’s Seed Fund was set up to help us
grow and encourage theatre and dance projects
in Somerset, with a grant generously provided
through the county’s Creative Industries Fund.
So far the Seed Fund has enabled 15 new projects
to start their journey, including the latest show from
When I Say Jump, just returning from a 4-week run
at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. We were also able
to support Hannah Le Feuvre’s Little Encounters
project, which explores children’s fascination with
trains and Yer Tis, a new play about Somerset by
Nick White and Emma Earle.
We are currently planning a new programme of
events and training for artists and practitioners
called Making in Somerset, which will run from
the autumn through to next spring. As part of this,
Take Art is pleased to announce a new round of
Seed Funding for theatre and performance
makers and graduates.
Small grants will be available to get your new
ideas off the ground from October 2012. Check out
our website for more details about how to apply.
So what’s been happening in the world of Take Art Theatre? From little acorns mighty theatre shows will grow…
Over the last few months Take Art Theatre has been working hard to nurture potential in Somerset, awarding Seed Funding to local practitioners and running a number of very successful training and networking sessions in fundraising, rural touring and creative speeddating.Fortherestof2012ourfocuswillbeongrowing:growing shows, growing talent and growing the theatre landscape.
