Welcome to Take Art’s January to June 2012 programme, packed with all our latest news, projects and shows.
For the uninitiated, Take Art is a pioneering arts charity, serving the towns, villages and rural communities
of Somerset. We do this by providing opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to experience,
participate and work within the arts.

Jan-Jun 2012 | Take Art 2
Having gone through a period of consolidation
after the now famous Somerset arts cuts, Take
Art is looking pretty trim.
We have helped to create two new shows for the
national rural touring circuit, including the comedy
rock satire Pub Rock and Maxwell Golden’s
inspired piece of hip hop theatre CountryBoy’s
Struggle. The latter giving us an unlikely partner
in the Manchester based Contact Theatre and
success with both urban Manchester and rural
Somerset audiences.
Our Dance Service is also looking at new local and
international partnerships, starting with the launch
of Urban Dance, a new participatory dance project
in the Yeovil area aimed at captivating disengaged
young people. Life Circles, the new dance and
older peoples project, kicks off in January 2012,
working with the frail elderly in residential homes
in Devon, Dorset and Somerset.
The Early Years Service are working with
colleagues in the South East to develop a new
show for the under 5s and are also building on the
successes of the Little Big Bang project, which has
helped change the creative culture within Somerset
Childrens’ Centres.
Partnerships inside and outside Somerset will
characterise our developing work programme.
At a time of profound change we wish to
emphasise the positives and optimise our limited
resources. That means linking up with our partners
for a common cause.
As the local authorities are still undergoing reviews
and funding cuts, uncertainty is still in the air for all
of us. Thankfully three year funding from the Arts
Council of England starting in 2012, gives us
a critical degree of stability, at least for the next
few years.
A deep breath and where exactly are we as one year ends and

all the shows being promoted in rural Somerset
this season. A fantastic range of music, theatre,

everyone’s taste.
As you can see by our programme, Take Art
works hard to encourage rural venues to promote
innovative, diverse and exciting work. One of the
ways we are doing this is by the project From the
Ground Up, which has enabled us to take a few
volunteer promoters on scouting trips to festivals
in Wales, Edinburgh and Manchester, with a view
to bringing some great new shows back to
Somerset next year.
Fancy a great local night out? Want to chase those winter blues away? Then why not try our 100% organic top-notch entertainment, delivered straight to your doorstep, or thereabouts.
Kate Scott, promoter from Dulverton said,
“Thanks so much for this opportunity. I absolutely
lovedtheDecibelFestival…I’vedefinitelylearntso
much about diversity of performance, performers
and stages!”
We also asked Kate what being a Live scheme
promoter means to her, “Rural touring brings a
huge ‘added value’ to the smaller communities...
There is nothing more satisfying for a promoter
than to hear the buzz of conversation after a show
that has left its audience stimulated and wanting to
share their thoughts about the experience.”
To get your tickets to any of the shows featured in
this brochure all you have to do is ring the listed
promoter, or buy online via our website

Angel Exit
From the life-affirming favourite childhood story
Spoilt orphan, Mary Lennox, is plucked from the
bright vibrancy of India and transplanted to
the grey Yorkshire moors and a big old house
brimming with secrets.
As the wind wuthers around the mysterious manor,
she encounters only locked doors, a curious robin
and a gruff gardener. Mary battles with her own
loneliness and hears strange cries echoing through
the house.
A hidden key unlocks the secret garden, but what
will this garden unlock in Mary? And will she be
able to help her grieving uncle and whoever is
wailing down the corridor?
Unearthing the dark heart of this classic tale,
Angel Exit celebrate the Centenary of Frances
Hodgson Burnett’s The Secret Garden with a
brand new production.
This wonderful children’s show has been presented
in their own rich visual style, blending ensemble
storytelling with striking physicality, beautiful
puppets, live singing and an original soundtrack. A
real family treat for everyone over six years.

You’re Not Like The Other Girls Chrissy Caroline Horton
A fond, comic and poignant portrait of love and war
We saw this one woman show in a village hall in
North Devon and hope you will agree that it is
quitesimplyadelightfromstarttofinish–funny,
captivating and very moving.
January 1945. Paris has been liberated. Christiane,
an eccentric, acutely myopic Parisian girl waits
at Gare du Nord for a ticket to England to be
reunitedwithherfiancé.Whileshewaits,this
gloriously irrepressible mademoiselle recounts
the story of her love affair with Cyril, a tongue-tied
English teacher from Staffordshire. From a chance
encounter at Cheadle tennis club, their story takes
us through 1930s Paris and the trials of separation,
when war interrupts their unlikely romance.
A few years ago Caroline Horton’s real life French
grandmother, Christiane, moved into sheltered
housing. Among a lifetime of clutter, Caroline found
a shoebox containing wartime letters. She pieced
together her story from remembered conversations
and the discovered letters, recounting her love affair
with Cyril Horton and memories of occupied France.
You’re Not Like The Other Girls Chrissy
was a hit of the 2010 Edinburgh Fringe, where it
won The Stage award for Best Solo Performance.
“This simple and heartfelt show feels like a real
labour of love… a really tremendous & rounded
performance.” Lyn Gardner, The Guardian

Little Big Bang Super Novas
Little Big Bang was set up to increase creative
opportunities for children and families in Somerset,
offering 750 workshops for the under 5s and 300
training sessions for artists, teachers and Early
Years practitioners.
A really important part of Little Big Bang was the
research. We wanted to explore how employing
an artist long term in a Children’s Centre might be
compared with the impact of a visiting artist.
Dr Susan Young from Exeter University has sited in
her mid term report (among other things) that you
get much better connections and results by having
an artist on site in a Children’s Centre.
In truth it has been a hugely successful project
but we want to ensure that these opportunities
continue.
The strong links we have made with The Octagon
in Yeovil, The Regal in Minehead, Somerset Art
Works and Shepton Mallet Digital Arts Festival
mean that many of the region’s arts organisations
now have good relationships with Somerset
Children’s Centres and are programming Early
Years work.
At Take Art, we will also be programming fabulous
international theatre in Children’s Centres as well
as theatres, running workshops for children and

Small Talk Probe
“A girl should be two things: who and what she wants” Coco Chanel
Don’t miss ‘dance goddess’ Antonia Grove of Probe in this virtuosic display of disguise and derangement, specially created by Wendy Houstoun. Houstoun stands out as one of the most original artists of her generation, with an international reputation for solo work.
Inherfirsteversuchcreationforanotherdancer,Houstoun channels her capacity to make lucid and humourous observations on contemporary culture. The result is Small Talk, a screen test for a B movie actress embodied by a series of edgy, sexy and unpredictable transformations.
Using stand-up singing, sit down talking, monosyllabic dancing and fast talking movement, the metamorphic Antonia embraces the chameleon desire to be all things to all people.

Luna Pretty Good Girl Dance Theatre
A brave and beautiful story
“Luna,” she repeated softly, more to herself than me. “Appropriate, wouldn’t you say? A girl who can only be seen by moonlight?” Rolling over, I muttered, “You’re such a freak show.” Her hair splayed across my pillow, tickling my face. “I know,” she murmured in my ear. “But you love me, don’t you?” Yeah, I loved her. I couldn’t help it. She was my brother.
Pretty Good Girl Dance Theatre use their unique blendofstorytelling, dance, filmandphysicaltheatre to tell a brave and beautiful story for everyone over the age of 14.
Offering an insight into the life of a transsexual teen; Luna takes the audience on a delicate theatrical and dance evoked journey with Liam/Luna and his sister Regan, as they come to understand Liam’s true identity.

performances from the best of Somerset theatre,
dance and spoken word.
Co Director of Theatre, Mark Helyar, said,
“We took a risk by completely re-inventing Made in
Somerset this year. It paid off - the festival
has been amazing, full of positive energy, great
ideas and a vast range of live performances,
workshops and showcases.”
Highlights included an Open Space debate at
The Brewhouse Theatre and a Practitioners Day
in Langport.
Our challenge now is to capitalise on the success
of this year’s Made in Somerset to enable artists
and companies to continue to make work and
flourishinthecurrentlandscape.
One of the ways we are going to do this is by
offering the following three skills development
workshops; Releasing your Fundraising Potential,
On the Road and Creative Speed Dating.
Take Art dreams of a county where artists, practitioners, companies and venues are inspired and enabled to create, produce and present extraordinary theatre for the people who live in and around Somerset. Our ambition is to help make this happen.

The Stu Brown Sextet
Jazz and Cartoons – That’s All Folks!
The Stu Brown Sextet was formed in 2008 by
drummer, Stu Brown, to celebrate 100 years of the
little known band leader, composer and inventor,
Raymond Scott.
Raymond’s wacky, hyper-animated, eyeball-
popping ‘cartoon jazz’ is most widely recognisable
for its use in the Looney Tunes cartoons from the
1940’s onwards and more recently, in Ren and
Stimpy and The Simpsons. His manic, offbeat
compositions, such as Dinner Music for a Pack
of Hungry Cannibals and Square Dance For Eight
Egyptian Mummies are performed with zest and
spontaneity by this brilliantly orchestrated sextet.
This group has proved to be immensely popular
with audiences of all ages and backgrounds, from
jazzfans,togeneralmusiclovers,tofilmand
animations fans, as well as families with young
children. The Stu Brown Sextet have played
to packed crowds at many of the UK’s leading
festivals, including London jazz festival 2011.
Twisted Tunes – The Music of Raymond Scott
was one of Mojo magazine’s top ten jazz albums
of 2009.
The show opens with a specially commissioned
shortdocumentaryfilmaboutRaymondScott.
