Context and Purpose of the Guide
Tall Wood Building Guide Project
Support the design of tall demonstration wood buildings
Consensus document reflecting state-of-the-art
90% Draft* delivered by August 30, 2013
* “90% Draft” defined as follows: technical content substantially complete and judged technically correct by Working Group, authors, and peer reviewers; all referenced tables and figures included in the document but not yet located in the body of the text; and some figures and tables to be redone to improve appearance and consistency. Feedback from users of the “90% Draft” may be considered for implementation in the First Edition of the Guide.

Tall Wood Building Guide Project
Tall Wood Buildings fall outside the scope of the acceptable solutions in North American building codes and design manuals for wood structures.
• The purpose of the Technical Guide is to facilitate acceptance by Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) of tall wood buildings using the alternative solutions path in building codes.
• The Guide is intended to be a consensus document applicable to any tall wood building system.
• The Guide also contains recommendations pertaining to construction costing, pre-fabrication, performance monitoring, and sustainability.
5
Purpose of the Guide
Tall Wood Building Guide Project
Be consistent with the underlying code objectives for tall steel and concrete buildings for tall wood buildings in the NBCC 2010 and NECB 2011
Follow performance-based philosophy and suggest performance criteria (e.g. those developed for steel or concrete systems) where applicable and preferred methodology (e.g. whole building energy efficiency, systems approach)
Follow a generic approach that can be applied to different innovative systems (brief examples for specific systems may be given)
6
Guiding Principles
25.09.2013
Confidential. For employees only. 4
Tall Wood Building Guide Project
Develop recommendations for designing for redundancy and resiliency (e.g. to rare and extreme events such as hurricanes, earthquakes, floods, tornados; against or tolerant of moisture ingress)
Make recommendations for attributes or for addressing issues that are not explicitly covered in the Canadian codes (e.g. disproportionate collapse, provisions for maintenance / inspections / monitoring)
Develop recommendations on how to: assess and specify proprietary connections, products, assemblies, systems (materials selection, substitution and equivalency); carry out assessment of whole building energy efficiency; design for durability
7
Guiding Principles
Tall Wood Building Guide Project
Strive to address pressing issues with a multi-disciplinary approach, and make reference to the existing technical information
Focus on essential items (e.g. identify appropriate assumptions for wood construction) that may form the basis of a good practices guide or code change proposal for broader acceptance
Enable the monitoring and collection of feedback on the performance of demonstration projects to help update Guide
