ANTLERS

JUNE 2017

MESSAGE FROM THE EXALTED RULER

As our Order evolves, there have been members who focused on their own ideas of what the Order encompasses and oddly dismiss as superfluous other elements that have been a vital part of the Order since its inception. Let’s remind ourselves that Ritual is the hand that rocked our nascent cradle, not a diseased tonsil for which we no longer have use. Before suggesting doing away altogether with our Ritual, consider its history and whether this Order without a ritual is an order at all.

John Bozeman, Exalted Ruler

(The following is quoted from pages 50-52 of History of the Elks 1868-1988, Nicholson, et al.) [quote] Arthur C. Moreland, P.E.R., New York Lodge No. 1, and at one time Grand Secretary of the Order, had a great deal to do during a long period of years with the development of the Ritual of the Order. He was the owner, editor and publisher of the Elks-Antler. In the April 1912 issue of that publication there appeared the following interesting and enlightening article on the Elks Ritual:

The History of Our Ritual The Grand Exalted Ruler, in his Official Circular No. 2, called upon the members of the Order to assist the Committee on Work and Ritual in revising and amending the present Ritual, and while this writer does not feel that has either the ability or the time to offer the suggestions necessary to be of assistance, he can in a general article help the committee by narrating the history of the ritual of the Order of Elks from the time of its institution, and thus afford them an outline that can be used in the preparation of a ritual closely identified with the best thoughts of the past and present.

ER Message Cont’d from Page 1“When the ‘Jolly Corks’ changed their name to theBenevolent and Protective Order of Elks onFebruary 16th, 1868, they were utterly without anyform of initiation beyond requiring the applicant foradmission pay his quota of the refreshments whichwere the sine qua non of that social gathering’sexistence. This state of affairs continued until May31st, 1868, when the Committee on Ritual, consisting of Brothers George W. Thompson,George F. McDonald, William Sheppard, ThomasG. Riggs, and William Lloyd Bowron, broughtbefore the body a ritual in two degrees, the firstutilizing some of the tricks played upon theunsuspecting initiate in the Corks, and the secondthe real ritual of the Order of Elks.

“The first degree, as it was called, was all that theCorks ever received, and of which they werealready possessors; the second degree was notconferred until four weeks of probationary conditionin the first degree had been completed. The ruptureby which the membership of the Order was reducedto just seven members on June 14th, 1868, gavethe opportunity to those who were left in the body toperfect the ritualistic work.

“The floor work, as it was called, of both degreeswas evolved by Brother Hugh P. O’Neil, and themajority of the lectures and explanation of thepurposes and objects of the Order were the work ofBrother George F. McDonald, with the assistanceand suggestion of the other members of thecommittee.

“This ritual, with two degrees and four weeks’probationary period was in existence and used asoriginally presented until 1881, when it wasamended by Past Exalted Grand Ruler Thomas E.Garrett, of St. Louis, by the addition of anotherofficer named as the Esquire, who took over a largeportion of the work of the Fourth Chair, then calledGrand Lecturer, but whose title was at the sametime changed to that of Esteemed Lecturing Knight.

“In 1884, Past Exalted Grand Ruler Edwin A. Perry, and the writer, revised, or, to use a betterexpression, edited this two-degree ritual, the onlysubstantial change in the form of the work being anamplification of the obligation practically in theshape of the present-day obligation. This ritualremained in force and effect until 1891, when, inaccordance with a resolution adopted at Clevelandin 1890, a new ritual presented, being acombination of the two degrees into one degree.

“In 1893 a new ritual was submitted to the Order, eliminating most of the work the old ritual and

substituting paraphernalia of various kinds, considerable rough-house and borrowing manyfeatures obsolete degrees of other fraternities.

“This remained in effect until 1895, when the lateBrother George W. Ryer, in conjunction with thewriter, prepared the ritual of 1895, returning most ofthe original thoughts beautified by poeticalexpressions from the pen of Brother Ryer. This notbeing entirely satisfactory, a sub-committee wasappointed by Past Grand Exalted Ruler Meade D.Detweiler in 1897, who reported in 1898 the ritualwhich continued in force until 1906. The committeeof 1898 was Brothers P.G.E.R. Charles E. Pickett;C. L. Bunting, of Bristol, Tenn.; George R. Perry, ofGrand Rapids; George A. Reynolds, of Saginaw, and the writer. The ritual of 1906 we are familiarwith, and it has been altered, changed andamended at nearly every subsequent Grand LodgeSession until the present time.

“The addenda of the ritual which have been mostvital were the introduction of the flag as thecovering of the altar at the suggestion of this writerin 1896, the instructions in secret work taken fromthe Loyal Knight to the Esquire, the elimination ofthe apron 1895, of the badge 1902, of the grip1904, and the test oath 1911, together with theabolition of all except the dignified and monitorycharacter of the present ritual. The rock upon whichmost ritual committees founder is the inability of thecommittee to grasp the thought that mere wordswithout suggestive action are of little avail. Wordsthemselves can be piled up like Ossa upon Pelion, but unless they contain the germ of thought andbeauty, are but weeds in the field of phraseology. The ritual committee that desires to bring awork to the Grand Lodge that will stand for alltime must also remember that the basicprinciple for any ritual of this Order is theblending of the thought that the animal whosename we bear can be, as it was by BrotherGeorge F. McDonald, made to assimilate, withhuman virtues, that without hyperbole, reverence, and devotion to patriotic thoughtcan be typified in the idealization of the flag, that it is the purpose of this fraternity toinculcate by moral education respect for itslaws and rights of our fellow men without thethreat of retributive punishment in case offailure, that the aim of the organization shouldbe able to make men better and to confirm in allthe lectures the impression that the candidateis worthy of the honor bestowed bymembership.” (emphasis added) [end quote]

“Blast Elkdom into the Future” April, 2017

Hello Florida Elks!

We are in the countdown of our Elk year. March was the month where we anticipated a membership increase in quite a long time. With all our Lodges pulling together, we will accomplish this goal.

I want to thank all members who stepped up in our state to be Exalted Rulers and officers. We are going to have a fantastic year next year. Endorsed State President Carl Gerace and Endorsed Frank Malatesta have some great ideas and we all need to back them as much or more as you did with me.

STATE PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE Cont’d

This year we tried to do some new things and some of them worked and some did not. We need to improve on the process and make changes to better our ideas. Last month we attended the Georgia state convention and also attended the Elks Regional Hoop Shoot contest in Valdosta, GA. The great state of Florida has four (4) winners. The most in a while. I also attended the Blue Star and Gold Star dedication held in West Palm Beach. Even had the opportunity to participate in the parade. All and all, this year was a great year and I thank all members for your support. April 1 starts off a brand new year. New Exalted Rulers, new officers and new committee people. You need to back your Lodge’s leadership. They took the position to help the Lodge go forward. Some of their ideas may not seem worthwhile to you, but it is the membership you are trying to please. Try all new ideas. We don’t want to get caught up in the EVOLUTION theory of “That’s the way we have always done it.” We need change, we need to go forward. Old school is great, but the latest generation sometimes don’t like the old school attitudes. We are trying to go forward, not stay where we are. Good luck to you all. One thing you may forget about, the Lodge membership runs the Lodge. In conclusion, Carl, Cathy, Frank, Sally and I thank you all. We have the best state in the country. Remember, your ideas will “Blast Elkdom into the Future.” Fraternally, John C. Harris, State President Florida State Elks Association
